Premier League survival will improve Leicester City's chances of keeping influential midfielder Esteban Cambiasso, says manager Nigel Pearson.

The 34-year-old has been a key figure in City's recent revival and they have offered to extend his contract beyond this summer.

Cambiasso has said he doesn't want to discuss his future until the end of the season, insisting he only wants to concentrate on Premier League survival.

Pearson has expressed his desire to keep the Argentina international but said his side's fate will be a factor.

"We will have a much better chance of Esteban staying with us (if City survive) but we will have to see how it pans out," said Pearson.

"There were questions about Esteban's contract situation and he said he would wait until the end of the season.

"As far as I'm concerned, that's fine. I would be more than happy to continue to work alongside him.

"I'm sure that will take care of itself. We have to keep our eye on what is happening now.

"Behind the scenes, as there have been with other players, there will be discussions about contracts but we will keep that in-house.

"He made a few comments and said it (survival) would be a great achievement for him.

"Esteban is a very interesting character, he has been very good to work with and I have enjoyed that. Hopefully, that will continue."

City have nine other players out of contract: Marcin Wasilewski, Matt Upson, Paul Konchesky, Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Dean Hammond, Zoumana Bakayogo, Conrad Logan, Anthony Knockaert and Paul Gallagher.

Pearson said contract talks with those who he wished to keep were on course.

"As far as I know everything's going pretty much to plan so far," he said.

"I'm not involved in that process apart from talking about players I want to keep or not.

"We have a pretty satisfied, happy camp.

"The process of dealing with any contracts that are up will be done in private first.

"You know I don't talk about that kind of stuff," added Pearson.

Not we that we didn't already know how highly he's considered, but I don't think Pearson would talk about working alongside any others in the squad

. Good point there. Can see Cambiasso working along side him as a coach.

Keep Cambiasso, Waselewski and if he sorts his head out Knockeart, the rest can go along with Simpson who has been awful....

I reckon we'll be in talks with Wasilewski, Hammond  and Konchesky for 1 deals and then obviously Knockaert.

I've no doubt Cambiasso will stay if we stay up

Just seen the bold Messiah in the Highcross, assume his wife and son. The little fella was not keeping up and drifting aimlessly, he got the same treatment as Shluupp is given by the great one.

Couldn't help thinking that he's had more pleasant afternoon strolls, still money talks and he clearly loves the club. Fingers crossed.

Safe to say he's dropped far below his level coming to us.  Would love to keep him but we can't be all that upset if he does decide to leave in the summer, especially if we drop back down.  I really hope he stays to help us establish ourselves if we stay up though.

What if a top team comes in for him? The chance at winning one more trophy must be tempting.

I'll be surprised if he stays with us even if we survive. He won't be short of playing/coaching offers from much more glamorous teams than Leicester I'd have thought. It's not as if he needs the money and he's added the PL to his illustrious CV now. If I was a multi millionaire with a young family I'm not sure I'd want to settle down long term in Leicester of all places. Must be a massive culture shock after Madrid and Milan lol. Hope I'm wrong though!

Can't see why he would go there. Won't do much to help his high level management aspirations and the money probably isn't as much as would be available to him elsewhere if he was even doing it for the money, which it doesn't seem like he would.

The money woukd be crazy, It's the only draw the Asian leagues have to big name players. As you say though, Cambiasso doesn't seem like the type to do it for the money.

Not worried about this myself, but I might start panicking when rumours of Argentine teams' interest start popping up again.

I've just come back from dejhi, its a shit place, Ludhiana is better

"Esteban Cambiasso's Incredible Indian Poon Adventure".

I can sense a prequel and sequel in the making. :D

No offence to India (I know a few Indians, top lads) but why would he go there and money isn't an answer? He would burn really bad, imagine his little bald head on those scorching desert pitches.

I think he would get more money in the US or China though. I don't think India has a history of paying huge amounts for ageing western stars like those nations have.

I guess the challenge of coaching and mentoring a bunch of Indian lads in a totally different culture might teach him a thing or two, but I'm sure he would be better off staying in the better leagues.
