Leicester to bid £8m for Mainz forward Shinji Okazaki

Pearson doesn't 'do deals' does he? He certainly doesn't schlep around Europe watching players or faxing transfer offers down to Germany.

You don't think it's NP that does all the leg work do you?

We have trained professionals to do that.

That's why we have Walsh, Neville and a shed load of scouts.

Obviously he's not sacking off training to write up contracts but he'd going to be putting his two penneth in on any and every player and potential deal.

I think this has come about because his agent or Shinji Okazaki himself is looking for a move

The story seems to come from his statement that he thanks us for a bid, but unfortunately it was the wrong time, sounds like a come & get me scenario to me

Whether we do continue our January interest or not, is a different matter

People need to get over their Nugent love. The guy is not a Premiership player and we need to look forward now. He's done ok at times this season but we're looking for players who can score goals at this level.

As if we don't need strengthening up front, we've not been able to hit a barn door for most of the season, even in our great run we've created a hat full of chances in games and missed them - Swansea for example, we battered them but the result was in the balance until the last minute, West Ham was the same.

I don't know if this bloke is the right player but another goalscorer certainly wouldn't hurt.

Nugent has been great for us overall. He has scored goals, gives us 100% every game and genuinely seems likeable.

I'm not about to be happy to see him sent on his way for a foreign mercenary.

If Nige does wield the axe then it will be done through gritted teeth I'm sure. He deserves respect.

The owners want someone from their part of the world so they can sell more shirts i.e Yuki Abe

Just for perspective there's about the same distance between Bangkok and Tokyo as there is from Leicester to the Central African Republic or Iraq. I don't know how strong the Asian connection can be in football but that's a lot of distance for it to travel.

We're not really desperate for goals. We've got nearly as many as most teams in midtable, only 3 shy of Swansea. If Vards can kick on a chip in a few more, same with the likes of Nuge/Mahrez/Kramaric and a couple more from midfield then we're flying. The defence and midfield cover needs to be sorted out first.

You always make it sound like we're a million miles away and that we need at least 2 20 goal a season strikers. Do you ever look at the table? You realise this was our first season back as well?

I want us to be ambitious but you seem to consistently overestimate (unrealistically so) what's needed to be a top 12 side in the Prem.

Are people seriously suggesting Darren bloody Bent!

lol

He's been a bit part player in a Derby side that failed to even make the play-offs!

I despair......

Kitchandro doesn't like Nuge and others but there is no reason we shouldn't get a better striker in AS WELL AS defenders and midfielders. One doesn't preclude the other.

It's by John Percy, I highly doubt that it's going to be 'lazy journalism' he's got almost everything he's reported on us spot on.

Nugent has been good for us, no doubt but Okazaki would be an improvement just look at the goals he's got for Mainz who are a lower table team in the Bundesliga this season. You can't rest on your laurels in the Premier League you have to keep improving the quality of your squad at every opportunity. If Pearson & Co. have wanted him since January and still do you can guarantee he'll add to the squad and that's all you can ask for.

As people said with Ulloa last year, if his goals keep him up then £8million will be nothing.

I'm not sure about this signing maybe £8million is a little too much for Leicester spend on one player... I just don't wanna us to become a QPR by buying unnecessary players for an stupid amount of money.  Just for shirt sales and publicity. We have done that route with Sven before and it didn't work.

£8Million is not big money in the premier league and keeping the wage bill under control is more important.

8 million may sound a lot but there is a very real chance that the owners and even ourselves could recoup a chunk of that if we can get a foothold in the Japanese market...

I find it difficult to believe that you really think Nigel Pearson would sign anyone for those reasons. You don't actually think we'd spend £8m on him for shirt sales and publicity do you?

I'd love it if we spent £8m and bought him.

That's got to be the bracket we operate in now. Every player signed, must improve the squad.

Buy this guy and sell Chris Wood.

I was talking about the Sven reign.

Yes but you seemed to be implying this potential signing might be us reverting to that? That's not going to happen under NP.

Yeah of course Nigel would never sign a player just for show and this new signing will probably not for show. The point I was making though is we never want to go back to that stage at anytime soon before Nigel arrived, also referring to QPR who just like to sign overrated big name players just for show.

He's nearly 30 and coming into the last year of his contract, so £8m does seem a bit steep, though the Far East commercial benefits would put paid to some of that.

Think it would see Nugent moved on if it did happen. Time to upgrade, I know people will say we play well when he's in the side but I think the last few weeks have proved we can without him too. There'll be plenty of Championship takers this summer, and they'd be paying a fee.

And yes of course this does depend on us staying up first.

He has just turned 29,so why is that considered to old?

There is to much rubbish spouting about age,Kevin Philips was still going at 40,a mere 11 years more than Shinji.

They have been watching him for ages so they must like him.

Posted

To be fair to Leicesterpool I think he might not be far off there. Not saying we'd sign a player for that reason alone but they might view it as making it a cheaper option for us than say... a forward in England who'd cost the same.

Leicester City are facing competition from Borussia Moenchengladbach for Japanese striker Shinji Okazaki, who looks set to leave Mainz.

The Foxes missed out on an £8million deal for Okazaki in the January transfer window but have maintained an interest during the second half of the Bundesliga season. Mainz were reluctant to part with the 29-year-old in January because of their parlous league position but won't stand in his way if they receive £10million this summer, having already set up a deal for Yoshinori Muto from FC Tokyo. Okazaki is keen to play in the Premier League and City's strong finish to the season had appeared to have strengthened their hand in the bid to complete the capture. But Borussia Moenchengladbach, who are looking to replace Max Kruse, can offer Champions League football next term after confirming third place in the Bundesliga. Okazaki has kept his counsel on move rumours during Mainz's battle against the drop but, speaking after their win over Cologne on Saturday, he admitted Moenchengladbach were a "good team". - See more at: https://www.clubcall.com/leicester-city/german-giants-battle-foxes-for-striker-target-1769711.html#sthash.ywn2h786.dpuf
