Again, you're missing the point. It's not spending £7m that concerns people. It's spending £7m on a 31 year, they are two very different things.

We also don't have £100m in the bank, we received about £30m less than that for starters. We then paid out £10m+ in bonuses, £22m fees and I'd hazard a guess at least £40m in wages, probably more like £50m. So it's not like it's just kicking around, we look to be spending similar again this year, with probably even more in wages.

I don't think I'm missing the point, I just don't agree with it. It doesn't matter how old a player is if he will improve the side. People praying Cambiasso will stay is surely case and point. No I'm not saying he's as good as him but he will improve the squad for the next couple of years and will in turn mean we can attract higher quality players. 3.5m for 2 good years would be well worth it if it pushed us on.

This season should be about establishing ourselves as a Premier League club and signing established Premier League players will be part of that. It doesn't mean Mahrez/Schlupp will be frozen out, it just means we have options and as we all know, competition for places USUALLY gets the best out of everyone's performances on the pitch. It also means if someone is going through a bad patch, we have a sufficient replacement.

Downing played 36 games for a team that finished 6 points ahead of us last season managed by a manager whose model, to an extent, Pearson closely follows. Arguably were it not for the managerial situation last season, Wham could have finished in the top 10 if you get me (up before you go go)

He scored 6 goals - a goal every 6 games, weighed in with 8 assists meaning he played a direct part in 1/3rd of all West Ham's goals last season , averages 2.3 key passes per game, has an 85% pass success rate, a very good disciplinary record, has premier league experience, and doesn't actually turn 31 until late July.

Given he will be just a few mnoths older when the new season starts, doesn't need time to adjust to a new country, league, level, and that in general we only offer 3 year contracts in any case, the only downside is having just turned 34 in 3 years time, we will have little resale value.

In the meantime we benefit potentially from him contributing circa 42 goals in the next 3 years, his experience, his know how, his status which helps the club brand and at £7m you know exactly what you are gonna get with reduced risk compared to a foreign player.

It's a no brainer for me.

That's enough of well reasoned arguments on the internet for today.

Never rated Downing and at that price is a joke...much rather go for Demarai Gray at around £4m.

Bournemouth had a £5 million pound big rejected so I doubt we'd get him for a million pound less.

Also he's only 18/19 years old can we risk putting him in our first team whilst we'll probably be fighting relegation again?

By even mentioning Cambiasso means you are missing the point, he didn't cost a fee. Free old players, not even a debate. Ones costing £7m, a debate. £7m is a lot of money, so people worrying about it going on someone who is 31 is a fair worry. There are plenty of players out there. Also, saying you're not sure about spending £7m doesn't mean you wouldn't have him, it doesn't mean you don't trust Pearson etc. It just means you think £7m on a 31 year old perhaps isn't the greatest value available.

42 goals over 3 years lol, bit of an exaggeration considering hes only managed 20 goals in 202 games spanning 7 seasons along with 25 ASSITS?!?! for a winger/midfielder they are terrible stats.

hes had one OK season and the majority seem to think 7m is good business for a 31 year old!

I am basing it on what he did in his most recent year managed by a  manager with a similar style to ours. If you based my performance at work over 7 years with some managers that didn't use me in the best way, or demotivated me coupled with the amount I have learnt in that period, then you may feel I'm average. However most recently, now well managed and experienced, I'm delivering to my potential and highly related (all an example ahem) And as a result, i'm more confident and sharper than I've ever been (definitely just an example)

Surely you judge a player on recent performance and not what happened years ago!

Yes it may not work out but there is a risk involved whoever you sign and for me, an experienced player who is proven at this level and had a good recent season mitigates most of the risk

does anyone else think we might be trying to win the league?

Not until I see GTF back in a leicester shirt

He's had 7 years where he has been absolute dog turd though, I understand what your saying but that half a season doesn't warrant a big price tag for a player that has been bang average for most of his career even at Liverpool with top players around him, whats to say that was just a fluke because if I was a manager I would compare my employees performance over 7 years or however long they have been in that career not over 1 good year.

Just think better options are out there.

at the end of the day you could be right, I could be right - he could get injured in pre-season and never play a game for us. His wages may be huge too. Only time will tell! I will trust in the management team whatever they decide.

The more I think about it, the more I can see us definitely trying 4 at the back again. It's been Pearson's favorite for a long time. Bringing in Huth and Fuchs, could see him try again. Depends on whether we bring in an improved right back.

Well they should have done, they were top 4 at Christmas

Not an upgrade on Schlupp in any sense imo. The most one footed player you're ever likely to see. Wouldn't want him personally regardless of price. But in Nige we trust.

One footed with quality....

He had a good 6 months last year, a great 6 months by his standard, but he has absolutely no improvement left in him, he was woeful at Liverpool when surrounded by very good players. I'd love to see Schlupp develop down that side, and take in to account Schlupp will only get better in the coming years and Downing will only get worse/stay the same, he's the racing equivalent of a 7 year old handicapper, Schlupp is a 2 year old who's won a maiden well with fancy entries . Just think Schlupp has the potential to be a far superiror player to Downing, and Downing has the potential to be the Downing of the first half of last season, but then in all probability I think you're more likely to get the Downing he's been for the majority of his career, including his most recent run of form, bang average. If Schlupp goes Arsenal then changes everything but I hope he stays.
