My Nads Posted 28 June 2015 Posted 28 June 2015 He would be a great signing. Hope it happens. 7m for a 30 year old player might seem a bit steep, but if he was in his 20's he would cost a lot more. His contract wont be any longer than 4 years and he's got a good 4+ years left in him and no doubt he will become a better player if he comes here. I would prefer him over Sako any day! He's more of a left sided Albrighton, so just think how much better our attack would be with crosses coming in from both wings.
My Nads Posted 28 June 2015 Posted 28 June 2015 The more I think about it, the more I can see us definitely trying 4 at the back again. It's been Pearson's favorite for a long time. Bringing in Huth and Fuchs, could see him try again. Depends on whether we bring in an improved right back. It does seem like it, but I think it's more so we can change to and from a 442 mid game without any players out of position. We are starting to look really solid with plenty of options.
ktfox59 Posted 28 June 2015 Posted 28 June 2015 Bournemouth had a £5 million pound big rejected so I doubt we'd get him for a million pound less. Also he's only 18/19 years old can we risk putting him in our first team whilst we'll probably be fighting relegation again? Theres being conservative and then some..Probably fighting relegation again? Ffs
Soar Fox Posted 28 June 2015 Posted 28 June 2015 Theres being conservative and then some..Probably fighting relegation again? Ffs With the team we have at the minute we will be in a group of around 7 teams fighting towards the bottom of the league. Nobody knows how the likes of Okazaki & Fuchs will be in this league, Cambiasso could yet leave aswel. With the signings of Downing & Jenkinson I'd say we'd push towards being midtable.

UpTheLeagueFox Posted 28 June 2015 Posted 28 June 2015 We could of course be linking ourselves with Downing to put pressure on Sako or other deals.
TMELcfc Posted 28 June 2015 Posted 28 June 2015 We could of course be linking ourselves with Downing to put pressure on Sako or other deals. Can't say I want Downing or Sako but Nigel hasn't exactly got a bad track record when in comes to player recruitment... So il back him whatever.
UpTheLeagueFox Posted 28 June 2015 Posted 28 June 2015 Can't say I want Downing or Sako but Nigel hasn't exactly got a bad track record when in comes to player recruitment... So il back him whatever. True. There are not many players he's signed who've diminished in transfer value... and bar the odd exception, there are not many players he's sold who've gone on to much success elsewhere
Wymsey Posted 28 June 2015 Posted 28 June 2015 Keep thinking Downing is Adam Johnson. Both have similar styles of play.
AyewJoking Posted 28 June 2015 Posted 28 June 2015 wants a move back north if you believe the sun wanted by sunderland + middlesbrough
Captain... Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 wants a move back north if you believe the sun wanted by sunderland + middlesbrough I could see him going back to 'Boro, BBC said Newcastle and Sunderland wanted him. Massive risk for him going to either of those considering his Boro connections. We would probably be his best option.
weller54 Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 Keep thinking Downing is Adam Johnson. Both have similar styles of play. Easy to tell apart.. One has an ankle tag!
Bagworthblue Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 wants a move back north if you believe the sun wanted by sunderland + middlesbrough on the one hand... we are a step in the right direction.... on the other hand - you can fly there from London in an hour! No flights from East Mids.
Ed25 Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 This says Stoke are interested now too http://m.stokesentinel.co.uk/Stoke-City-Potters-left-ponder-winger-Spurs/story-26796804-detail/story.html
chapero82 Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 on the one hand... we are a step in the right direction.... on the other hand - you can fly there from London in an hour! No flights from East Mids. The owners could just give him a lift
Wortho Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 I would rather us buy Sako than spend £7M plus wages on Downing.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 I would rather us buy Sako than spend £7M plus wages on Downing.I'd rather us sign Mavis the tea lady than Downing in fairness

Wortho Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 I'd rather us sign Mavis the tea lady than Downing in fairness I'd forgotten about her!!
ALC Fox Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 Downing's is a transfer I honestly think is impossible to call. He has the choice of working with a former boss in McClaren at Newcastle, as well as a former club (albeit on loan) in Sunderland, a progressive, ambitious and well-run club in Swansea, with the same being true of us and Stoke, and another former club of his in his home town club of Middlesborough. Newcastle, Sunderland and Boro all have the advantage of being in the North East whereas Stoke, Swansea and our good selves being well-run enough to provide stability, but being places where he has no ties (unless you count his stint at fellow Midlanders Aston Villa a tick in that box for us or Stoke). Our relegation battle last season won't work in our favour but then neither will Newcastle and Sunderland's work in theirs. I doubt he'd drop to the Championship for anyone but Boro, and it may well be possible that he sees that move as a chance to get them to the Prem and help establish them there before he ends his career on 3-6 years time. There really are so many parameters involved that it's just impossible to call.
Long Eaton Fox Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 Thought he played well for WHU down at the KP last season but I think he is too similar to Mahrez in style. Plays on the right, cuts in on his left. Good signing for around 2/3M though, if it happens.
ARM1968 Posted 29 June 2015 Posted 29 June 2015 Good player. Experienced. Probably a little expensive but would improve the squad. Always works hard. It's not my money. I'd take him.
RedSoxUK Posted 30 June 2015 Posted 30 June 2015 Amazed by the lack of excitement and intrigue towards this possibile signing, Downing is exactly the kind of player we should be looking at irregardless of Sako/Cambiasso etc. A usual consistent performer, assist and crossing machine (perfect opposite Albrighton, and perfect for Ulloa,) can be string and a creative CM if required, a comfortable midfielder for any top 12 team, a position and calibre of performer we should be definitely going after. He proved this season for West Ham that he's just as effective now as he was during his Villa days and that his age (31 by the time he starts playing this season,) only points to experience, and a lower transfer fee / wage in comparison to his standard just a few years ago when scouted for Liverpool under their Moneyball approach to football - they were on to something still, and he plays with both feet and has been used most effectively recently on the right side of midfield. 7m fee to me is just about right for a to be 31 year old attacking/playmaking midfielder with the experience and quality of Downing, one of the true recent England players of late whose value doesn't overweigh his place of birth. His wages will be an issue, and motivation to drop down from a regular top 10ish position to just escaping relegation Leicester will probably make him go to Stoke or Swansea, shame because I'd love Downing in our squad, the right player to buy at this point IMO.
Lambert09 Posted 30 June 2015 Posted 30 June 2015 True. There are not many players he's signed who've diminished in transfer value... and bar the odd exception, there are not many players he's sold who've gone on to much success elsewhere The only one I can think of is Gradel. Nobody else seems to have been let go at the wrong time.
Thracian Posted 30 June 2015 Posted 30 June 2015 Assuming we want him, It will be a sad commentary if we can't make the idea of signing for Leicester more attractive than his rejoining Middlesbrough. That said, nostalgia can be a powerful force.
