£40 million on defence in January?

1. We're safe.  (read T&Cs)

2. We've probably never had such a good global reputation as we have now and in a position to sign high caliber players..

2. Our business plan for next year should cater for another £100m (unexpected at this stage)

4 Our defence is substandard.

I know there's this argument where we're not going to keep clean sheets playing our style of football but I really do feel we could do with spending at least £30m in January on replacing it to the point that Huth is fighting for his place.

Fuchs is good enough but I'd like to see two £20m+ players coming in.. One CB to replace Morgan and a new right back.... They do need to be the right fit but we can trust Walsh to sort that out.

Don't know what type of RB would suit our style of play tbh; possibly a cautious RWB.

With CB's, Huth and Wes only have around another season or so before their overall performances decline potentially.

Midfield is fine, though quite surprised Inler has apparently struggled to get going.

Strike force is fine - can see Okazaki improving and Ulloa stepping up.

When i saw the thread title i genuinely thought this was going to be a debate about government fiscal policy.

£40m on defence would see us invaded by Morocco.

have they got any good right backs?

Whilst we do now have the money to do this, decent defenders are at a premium and if you're talking that sort of money, they go to clubs in the Champions League.

Funnily enough though, I had a conversation with a Man Utd supporting mate and we basically came to the conclusion that if we chucked enough money about to sign someone like Matts Hummels and a really good right back, we could genuinely finish in the top 4.

Obviously won't happen, but a couple of players of that calibre would probably be enough.

I wonder whether we could convert Albrighton into a quality full back?

another question is, does Ranieri have the stones to drop Morgan given he's the captain and the reaction from fans if he did?

The biggest clubs might bring in one player at £20+ million in January, two would be tough, but stranger things have happened. Signing one for £10+ to challenge Huth/Wes would impress me.

He's younger, our captain and been far better than Huth. You have an agenda.

Adam Johnson isn't even spending that much ..................

Defending isn't just about the defence. we are still playing without a holding midfielder. A really disciplined one. DD gets forward to support and Ng isn't shy to drive forward once he makes an interception. whilst we are playing in an open fashion we will continue to concede. Better defenders may not make that much difference. The longer we stay at the top level, the better the players coming in will be.

Surely getting good players is more important than getting expensive players?

This.

Our success is built on Walsh and co finding value for money. Why get this far and abandon the policy?

Look at the league table. Look where Liverpool and Villa are relative to their spend.

Wes has been better than Huth this season for a start. Think Fuchs is good enough.

I think it's our style more than quality of personnel but admittedly things like set pieces are worrying.

Would like another, younger CB and someone like Trippier. It's not essential we so it in January but admittedly may help a push to more lofty heights.

I don't understand the idea of equating signings to a certain level of spending. Vardy came for next to nothing. What impresses me most about Leicester at the moment is the number of playing performing at an exceptional or near exceptional level at the same time.

Vardy, Mahrez, Kante, Drinkwater, Albrighton, Schlupp and Fuchs might be mentioned. None of those cost exceptional money and some cost next to nothing.

Only three things actually matter, the quality of a target, his suitability to the team philosophy/systems of play and whether he wants/can be persuaded to come here...and Leicester City offers a damned good platform for most footballers nowadays.

We pay well, we've got a wonderful spirit inside the club, even Ranieri's commented on our exceptional facilities, we have owners who are constructively and effectively ambitious and support that, head for head, is vocally second to none in England.

Everyone knows we need to strengthen certain areas but this isn't the Rob Kelly era. We may have weaknesses like every team but there's not the kind of emergency that requires hasty over-the-top spending for the sake of it.

And I'd far rather we recruit the right recruits for £1m apiece than get the wrong ones for £20m. That's not to say we shouldn't have the nerve to invest big money if the right opportunity arises. Just that I'm quite sure there are determined players out there who would relish the chance to make their name at Leicester - and have the ability to do so given the opportunity and encouragement.

There is much to be said for "hungry" footballers. Some, like Cambiasso, stay hungry because it's part of their nature however old they get. But for others it's the big payday that matters most. As in the search for Holy Grail it is important to "Choose Wisely". And that has nothing to do with the price.

Defending is about the whole pitch and the way you attack, the way we play we would need Hummels Kompany Alaba and Lahm at the back to help us out!

Take Joe Gomez at Liverpool for an example of that.

We're in a great position where youngish players in lesser foreign leagues or in lower divisions who are ready to make the next step will look to us and think they can come, and if they perform well they'll get high profile first team football. They might be trying to put themselves in the shop window, but there are worse motivations for working hard and playing well (and of course if we do well enough they won't need to move to get Champions League football :D).

The concern, I suppose, is that if we get people moving from big clubs for big fees we could get Keowns rather than Mahrezes. Hopefully we dig up a keen youngish defender on the rise for 3-5million-I'd rather that than spend £15m on someone not quite cutting it at ManU/City/Chelsea...
