£40 million on defence in January?

To be honest I don't think our defence is THAT bad, a right back is all we need currently. If we were to push on which I think we should we should be looking further a field to find some bargains and bring them in through the second half of the season slowly, huth and morgan aren't getting any younger. If you look at the premier league there isn't many big money defenders really tearing it up. The only defenders that you would class as quality centre halves have been at their clubs for a while not many 20mill + look good because the premier league is such a different league for defenders compared to anywhere else.

Would be happy to see someone like Ashley Williams AND OR Winston Reid. Players who know the Premier League. Saying that Huth and Wes haven't really done nothing wrong this season. Benalouane has impressed me all the times I've seen him.

We haven't even given Benny a chance yet and you want to bring in £20+ mil replacements? I agree that if we're not going to use Wasilewski we might as well bring in a youngish defender who can play a bit. What are the odds of us going back for Amartey in Jan?

Agree we could do with someone like Williams, but he's their captain and has been with them since promotion. He's Mr Swansea. We need someone to come in and own the shirt (like Walsh/Elliott did), and who is so invested they wouldn't think of leaving.

Having said that, I'm not horribly worried about CB this season: Huth, Was, Benny and Morgan should be up to it. We need one for the future, but we do need a RB sooner rather than later. I've liked deLaet whenever he's played CB, and given his struggles out wide I wonder whether that might be his position long term.

We aren't going to be signing first team players from established premier league clubs like that, I know you said players "like" that. The way we'll do it is by bringing players who aren't established yet, just as Swansea and West Ham did. That's where the scouting comes in.

When i saw the thread title i genuinely thought this was going to be a debate about government fiscal policy.

:D

Likewise. I assumed that it was the potential price of renewing Trident.

FFS sake people even have brains to engage these days, because it doesn't look like it. Two £20 million defenders? Get real . Money doesn't necessarily mean quality. I trust Walsh & co to scout thoroughly and properly to find value for money, not just going throwing cash at anything.

This.

Our success is built on Walsh and co finding value for money. Why get this far and abandon the policy?

Look at the league table. Look where Liverpool and Villa are relative to their spend.

You can still get value for money in the higher price brackets, they just need to be much better players, which is what we should be aiming for.

Sometimes you do need to spend big to get established, proven players at the peak of their career. We'll struggle to get much better than we've already got with cheap and freebie signings.

And I don't think it's a choice between spending big and scouting for bargains. One doesn't rule out the other. I'm sure the scouts are still working and if they find a bargain I very much doubt claudio will turn it down because he wants to spend more.

Surely getting good players is more important than getting expensive players?

Exactly this. Our fans seem to applaud the signing of Mahrez and Vardy for relatively very little and in the same breath talk about speaking £millions on improving the squad.

I agree with the strengthening whilst we're strong though, as long as we don't do a Liverpool and sign in bulk. In Jan, the defence is the obvious area to strengthen. Then taking into account our whole squad, young players coming through etc, I'd say high a quality GK, CB, RB and CF over the next few transfer windows would turn us into an extremely good side.

I think what we need is ayers who can come straight in and settle.

Took mahrez 6 months to really find his feet

Took Vardy a year

Took albrighton >6 months

The most important point is that Walsh and co have a plan for improving the defense over the next 18 months.  We will need a new right back and two center backs.

Ashley WIlliams is the same age as Wes and Huth and to be honest it is a sidewys move for him, so why would he bother at this stage in his career.  I don't think we need someone to settle into the team straight away but having genuine competition for Wes and Huth at the start of next season is important.  Perhaps Benny will be the competition next season.

If Trippier is not getting a look in at Spurs still, he is worth considering.   Sam Byram maybe?  Chilwell will hopefully be given the chance to see if he could be the long term solution at left back.

I wonder whether we could convert Albrighton into a quality full back?

another question is, does Ranieri have the stones to drop Morgan given he's the captain and the reaction from fans if he did?

Doubt we'll be able to get John Stones to be honest

Not in our case.

Vardy: £1m

Mahrez: £350k

Albrighton: free

Cambiasso: free

Matty James: £1.00 (IIRC!)

Morgan: £1m

Drinky: £0.5m approx.

To be fair, James was basically £1m. Came as part of a £2m double deal with RDL, but ManUtd sold us Ritchie for £1,999,999 so they could avoid a sell on fee for MJ

If we want to be regularly pushing for a top 8 position then however good our scouting system is it's unlikely to happen with a team full of players costing 400k.

If it was possible Man City, Chelsea, Man U etc would have offered Walsh and our scouting team a small fortune to join them.

If you're getting £130m from TV rights (next season) then spending £40m on the right players to cement that position is a no brainer.

The more money you spend the less risk you should be taking, there is an obvious correlation between quality and transfer fee.

However we shouldn't be spending big for the sake of spending big.

I'd like to think that whilst our stock is high we can attract a better quality of player than ever before. For example perhaps if we tried to buy Aranguiz this January instead of the summer he may have come to us rather than steadfastly hold out for Leverkusen?

I'd like to think we have players on our database that may have been out of our reach but will consider us if in January we're still there or thereabouts?

The profile of players I'd like us to sign are 24 years old and under and maybe amongst the best players in European leagues outside the big five. A top notch right back from the Swiss league or an outstanding centre half from Belgium, etc.

I dont think for one moment, that the club wouldnt go out and buy,1-3 defenders, if they offered more than what we already have. MANY Names, reputations can be put forward, but I am happy to rely on the scouting and coaching staff to try and find these missing links.

We have started with a bang, football is for the now, forget the future, we are just tipping our toes into the upper echelons of the PL, lets see with this beginning how far it takes us.Too many ex-PL teams have thrown money out and failed miserably, and hit financial restraints.

The management have shown their hand, and have mentioned, they expect improved developement, and higher postions to be targetted, but they have no interest in throwing money at it blindly. Funds will be made available and will be no problem , if and when the right players are found.

We have Huth, Morgan, Wasi, now Benny and Fuchs, RDL and Simpson, with Chilli waiting in the wings.

We cant change it until January, there are alot of things that can change before then in our needs/perspectives.

There is a difference, in dreaming, hoping , and then realising the super start will continue,

to what financial packets will be set, and what doors will be closed or opened in seeing what players are available and then willing to come to the foxes.

Unless the coaching and scouting staff have already zeroed on 1-3 buys , I dont see January incomings bringing any

great squad change.

It would be interesting to see or hear if Claudio wants to be involved and has anyone in his sights

Wasn't it the other way around? James came through their youth team whereas RDL was bought from Stoke.

I imagine Walshy is checking out defenders currently and I wouldn't bet against him finding a few gems. £20 million players would eat up another £10-£15 million in fees and wages. That's stupid at this point.

Right back is definitely required but we don't need to go mad.
