MooseBreath Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 Having heard this news one thing's for certain, there'll be hearts breaking wide open all over the world tonight.
AKCJ Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 For some reason I thought of the bird when reading this thread's title rather than the country. Would have been a better story.
Izzy Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 Having heard this news one thing's for certain, there'll be hearts breaking wide open all over the world tonight. That's pretty arrogant, considering the company you're in.

Guest Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 The syrian turkmen that shot the pilots as they descended, are they on the side of the Turkish govt. , IS or another anti-govt. rebel force?
bovril Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 The syrian turkmen that shot the pilots as they descended, are they on the side of the Turkish govt. , IS or another anti-govt. rebel force? Both sides, Syria and Turkey, have been funding and supporting groups in the other's country for decades. The Turkmen in that part of Syria are some kind of 'buffer' for the Turks. They are pro-Ankara and nominally anti-Assad without being particularly pro-rebels, If that makes any sense. It's becoming like Lebanon in the 80s where eventually we'll forget who's on whose side.

Guest Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 BBC just stated similar: Who are the Turkmen? Posted at14:59 Our colleagues at BBC Monitoring have been taking a look at the Turkmen, with fighters from the community claiming they shot dead the two fighters who ejected from the downed Russian plane. Who are they? Ethnic Turks who have lived in the region of Syria, Iraq and Iran since the 11th century. They are estimated to number between 1.5m and 3.5m. What is their role in Syria? Trained by Turkey, the Syrian Turkmen Brigades are about 10,000 strong and were set up in 2012 as the civil war in Syria took hold. Who are their allies/enemies? Their main opponents are the regular Syrian army and the Islamic State militant group. Some units have allied with Kurdish fighters.
bovril Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 Syria and Russia still claim that panhandle of Turkey is Syria anyway. I was travelling in that area in 2010 using an official Syrian road map and it showed Hatay province as theirs. The 'Turks' there speak Arabic anyway. All very complicated and messy. Tribal bullshit.
bovril Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 Never fear folks, Tusk has tweeted asking for calm. *breaths a sigh of relief*
Guest Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 US confirm that the Russian plane was warned 10 times before being shot down
Guest Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 I see the BBC showing that Russians are the second biggest group of tourists to Turkey and that travel companies have suspended package tours from Russia. (UK third biggest).
Thracian Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 And you think that Russia don't have their "own goals"? Russia are always on the side of Russia and NO-ONE else. All countries have their own goals and Russia no more so than many others. For what it's worth - which is next to nothing - I think the West has been wrong to continually seek to portray Russia as some sort of bogeyman. Even on the issue of Ukraine, the EU's own ambitions have done so much to fan the flames of Russian irritation - irresponsibly in my view. As for Turkey few leaders have more firmly fixed intentions than Erdogan and they leave Turkey as one of the most flammable tinder boxes on Earth with the potential to ignite wider or even global conflict. Fortunately Russia has considerable "interests" in relation to Turkey so I doubt this particular incident will be especially precipitous although the fate of the crew might colour the issue. But Turkey's making a mountain out of a molehill seems entirely unnecessary and more especially given that the UK has managed to avoid any such reaction on the many occasions the Russians have flown in and around our own airspace. But nothing Erdogan does surprises me. To me he's one of the most dangerous leaders on Earth and a lot of Turks recognise that for all that he seems to have re-established his mandate.
Thracian Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 It was in their airspace and they'd warned it numerous times. I'm pretty sure most Nato powers would probably have reacted similarly. A Russian sub or high altitude bomber is spotted within leagues of our territory and we scramble to head them off and that's without them crossing. The Russians would DEFINITELY do the same if it was in their airspace, fighter plane or not! I'm pretty sure they wouldn't given there was no genuinely perceived threat to Turkey whatsoever. I'm not even sure about Russia. They've no real need to rattle their sabres without there being a real threat and there's surely not an air force on the European landmass that would seriously think about threatening Russia.
