Driving and learning to drive

I'm a long way in to learning to drive and have had many lessons now, and I'm just curious on how every one else got on when learning to drive.

How many lessons did you have?

Did you pass first time on both the theory and practical?

Did you enjoy the overall process?

Also, any tips for the hazard perception? Got my theory very soon, and on multiple choice I score 48-50 most times, but hazard perception I'm always pressing too early and failing!

Thanks!

I think I had about 38 hours worth of lessons, but that was crammed into a three month period and I passed second time. I remember scoring 100% on the theory multiple choice, but with hazard perception if I'd have scored one less mark I'd have failed lol I had the same issue whereby I was pressing too early.

When I failed my first test it was for turning right at the end of a one way street, which I thought was two-way hence I positioned the vehicle in the left lane to turn right :(

I must have had 40+ lessons and I passed second time. We didn't have a theory test in those days. :D

it's ridiculous, if you press to early surely that makes you a better driver for spotting it quicker!?

I had 10 hours worth of lessons. Had a moped before though so think I understood the roads pretty well and probably had an advantage. Passed first time.

I had a lot of lessons too, can't remember how many. Passed hazard perception first time and driving test second.

Only got two minors on my first driving test but got a major for doing 40+ on a 30 (it's usually a 50 but there were road works and everybody was still going fast so I thought I'd join in).

Don't rush into your hazard perception questions. They are generally simple and the answer is usually in the question so don't jump straight in. Look through each question carefully - you've got enough time.

I found the whole theory test was easy, they use the same questions all the time, in terms of hazard perception you can get some practice ones online and after a couple days of fairly frequent practice it will be a piece of cake.

Theory test is 90% common sense, same with hazard perception tbh, just don't spam the button for every little thing. Failed my first test with 0 minors and 1 major.

i failed my theory once (i booked it for the day i got back from leeds festival, i could barely even tell you which one was a car let alone what it was doing on the road) but passed the actual test first time. was pretty easy really, just like a lesson except you don't have an annoying bald fella telling you you're doing everything wrong when you're actually doing it right

My old driving instructor in Loughborough looks exactly like Ranieri, if you had the same guy you'll know what I mean.

Had about 40 hours. (Didn't have a car to practice in, parents use automatics). Only just passed the theory and failed my first test with 15 minors and 2 majors. Fast foward 4 months and two back to back two hour lessons (I moved to uni in the summer and i only had a few days when I got back before the test) and I passed with only 2 minors. Best piece of advice is just take it slow and check your mirrors, dont let nerves get the best of you.

I had about 50 lessons. And I passed my theory and practical first time.

Theory - Easy so long as you do some very basic revision on some good apps a week or two before.

Practical - All about you ability to control your nerves.

The process was enjoyable. Luckily I'm quite good at controlling nerves in those situations.

Good luck to you.

I think it's because you are pre-empting the hazard as you're doing a hazard perception test and they want to make sure you click when you see the hazard developing, not just because the kid with the ball on the pavement MIGHT drop it into the road, but wait til it actually becomes hazardous?

i had lessons on a weekly basis for over a year. i felt my instructor was holding me back so i bought a fiesta and drove that around on a provisional.

in the end, all those lessons paid off as i passed first time with only 2 minors!!

the theory is easy especially if you do some revision. the hazard perception i always found hit and miss as potentially everything is a hazard!!

I'm surprised the hazard perception is still a requirement as i thought it would get scrapped.

do you have to drive on the motorway or has that not been implemented yet? motorway driving is actually easier than driving on regular roads imo, its just the speed /big lorries that unnerve the novice driver.

Nope you're not allowed on the motorway on a provisional yet, although they advise you do an extra lesson or two with your adviser after you've passed and got your full license so you get to grips with motorway driving. Bit odd really considering A roads and national speed limit roads are fair game, but I suppose the volume of traffic makes it a bit more nervy/accident prone.

But you should be pre-empting hazards, you  see some kids playing near the road you should adjust, ease up a little on the accelerator and give yourself a bit more time to react should anything happen.

Seems harsh to punish people for being overly cautious.

Being overly cautious could be equally dangerous in some situations I'd imagine.

I had six lessons and passed first time. But I went out EVERY night with my Mum or Dad to learn as soon as I got my provisional licence. I was the youngest in my school year so the last to pass my test and remember how frustrating it was seeing my mates drive when I couldn't. We also used to visit my Gran in Morecambe as a youth and my Dad taught me the basics as I drove on the beach aged 14-16 in his old Cortina - not sure if that's allowed now!! Took my test in Hinkley around the estates and there wasn't much traffic so got lucky I think.

Failed first theory test as I couldn't be bothered with the Highway Code and tried to wing it - nearly did mind!

Failed first practical due to a numpty of an examiner who'd met his quota for the day. Took test again 2 weeks later (different examiner) and passed with 2 minors, even though I thought my driving was better on the first test

Only had about 15 lessons but I already had a motorcycle license which made it easier

Hazard perception is flawed, reading about what not to do definitely helps (don't click before hazards actually enter the road, make sure not to accidentally click in any sort of pattern as it will recognise this as an attempt to cheat and fail you). If you get the video of the herd of sheep, 1 click covers the lot. Don't click 60 times, even though it is 60 hazards

Only if you are constantly slamming on the brakes, seeing some kids playing near a road should make you start thinking and anticipating what could happen and making sure that if something does happen you are prepared, not necessarily slowing down or changing your course, but just being more aware.

Passed last month, second time. Driving on the motorway for the first time next week to Watford and I am shitting a brick about it tbh

Motorways are a piece of piss mate - statistically the safest roads. It's the fvckin idiots diving 80mph down country lanes that you need to watch out for...

i was well scared about driving home from leeds and driving to home games in leics but once you do it for about ten minutes i now find it easier than driving round town tbh. when the satnav just says "drive in a straight line on this massive road for 74 miles" you literally just drive in a straight line for 74 miles. well easier than random one way streets, mini roundabouts, trying to parallel park or any of that annoying shit
