Kasper made an amazing save, shame it was from an offside, I thought Liverpool were decent first half, restricted us and had plenty of pressure without creating many clear cut chances and fluffed the ones they had.

 

We were guilty of giving the ball away too often, but we have match winners and a mentality of if the first 10 attempted through balls don't work the 11th might, everything is geared towards giving our match winners a chance and boy didn't Vardy take it.

 

Some of the one touch stuff was orgasmic at times.

Huth 8 - Made a lot of smart decisions under pressure last night, it'll have gone unnoticed by many. Sometimes you just need to stick it in row Z.

Fuchs 7 - For the second game in a row I thought he was a bit too casual on the ball sometimes, still very good though.

 

Mahrez 9 - As I've just said in another thread, he's trying to make match winning plays every single time he's on the ball which is what he's there to do. Even with his failure rate he still created several brilliant chances, narrowly missed several ranged efforts and defended brilliantly just prior to his assist, which was a wonderful instinctive ball.

Drinkwater 9 - Absolutely everywhere, so neat on the ball. His role in that mesmerising stretch of play leading up to the penalty claim really reminded me of a young Scholes.

Kante 9 - 4.5 marks for each Kante on the pitch.

Albrighton 6 - Steady performance as ever, Gray will be eyeing his place though. Every successful team has it's workhorses. He's our Park or Milner.

 

Okazaki 8 - Thought he was brilliant last night for the second game in a row, so neat with his feet and works so hard, if he bulks up a bit he'll be top drawer.

Vardy 9 - What can you say, two stunningly taken goals but his movement into the channels and hold up play was wonderful all night. Looks back to full fitness and bang in form.

You could tell Vardy is feeling better, not because of the goals but because his determination to chase down lost causes is back. 9

 

Kante is with out a doubt the best signing ever. He could go on to be a world class midfielder playing week in week out for Barca or Real. 9

 

Kasper made a few tremendous saves. Shinji had great work rate, and Danny Drinkwater cleaned everything up for us - all 8

Ranieri -9- Spot on selection and tactics.

 

Kasper -8- Excellent. Looked secure and solid. For me, one of the top 6 goalkeepers in the P/L.

 

Simpson -7- Solid job throughout the game.

Morgan -7- Solid and played well.

Huth -7- Very solid, played very well, but lost a point for another silly elbow. This will cost him, and us, one day. Must control his arms better.

Fuchs -7- The usual Fuchs. Lovely left foot, and lots of excellent challenges.

 

Kante -8- Ran and ran and ran and ran. Just everywhere. Looked very sharp.

Mahrez -7- Fantastic ball for Vardy's first. Three excellent efforts. Looking better after a few patchy games.

Albrighton -6.5- Worked his socks off as usual, but not a lot came off for him.

Drinkwater -8.5- Superb again. Best midfielder in the country at the moment.

 

Okazaki -7.5- Shame he didn't score from Vardy's cross, but looked sharp and full of running. Made Vardy's second (luckily!) and should have had a penalty too.

Vardy -9.5- MOTM. This 10 day break has been excellent for Vardy. He's had time to get fit after his minor op, and his running and sharpness is back to 100%.

 

Subs:

Ulloa -6- Not on long enough really.

Gray -6- Has some nice skill. Good to see him slowly fitting into our style.

King -6- Typical King cameo.

 

Liverpool: -7- Thought they played well after a lot of games.

 

Officials: -5.5- Missed a stonewall Okazaki penalty. Otherwise not the worst we've had this season.

Liverpool weren't bad at all, the put us under a lot of pressure on and off the ball, but they were lacking with the final ball and their shooting was fairly poor when they did get a chance, their best effort being a bizarre shot from Moreno and an offside effort from Can that was saved brilliantly by Kasper.

I think the fear is just that Albrighton has gotten too predictable (thinking of his heat map compared to Mahrez's). But his work rate is commendable.

yeah perhaps. i thought he was very uninvolved in the first half and it wasn't good to see. as you said can't knock his defensive work helping out all the time but when we were on attacks he seemed to just stand on the touchline and not even ask for the ball, and then when it did get to him he didn't want it or know what to do with it. 

 

wouldn't mind gray getting a start sometime soon but not in the next two, as like you said albrighton's work rate will be key if we're going to keep silva/sterling and then walcott/sanchez quiet.

I have to watch the match again, but I don't recall Mahrez and Albrighton switching wings that last match. Usually that allows Albrighton to be more dynamic in attack, since his instructions primarily are to go to the touchline and cross.

I do think that MA is being given more instructions to protect the flank and Kante/DD are to keep an eye on the right side while Mahrez roams.

 

I do think MA is very important to our success his work rate and pressing and defensive support are undervalued, and staying out wide isn't a bad thing, if he and Mahrez are cutting in all the time it will get very congested, with him staying wide Liverpool had to either push the full back out wide or drop a midfielder back if they don't he is an easy outlet.

Kasper 6 - Had little to do in all honesty. One stunning reflex save, but it wouldn't have counted anyway. His distribution in the beginning was atrocious, but his long kicks cause problems for opposition teams and helps us in many ways because we compete for every single ball. At worst, it's a throw in for the opposition deep into their own third and combined with our pressing it led to that super effort from Mahrez which Mignolet did well to save. It's just another player ability that we are using to maximize the efficiency of our team.

 

Simpson 6 - Emre Can and Moreno had the better of him most of the game and it's down that side Liverpool were most dangerous. Lucky for us, neither player had end quality, so it didn't have any consequence. Worked hard and did alright in all other aspects of the game. Could close down more, but I suppose he's instructed to play this way.

 

Huth 8 - Simply superb. Had a few hairy moments in possession and once again swung an arm out, but as long as it doesn't cost us, I'll turn a bit of a blind eye. Besides, Wasilewski will just come in and do the same stuff.

 

Morgan 8 - So so composed and looks supremely confident. I'm never worried when he gets the ball to feet this season. However, another air kick suggests to me he needs some new contact lenses!

 

Fuchs 7 - Did fine defensively and offered good support to Albrighton. Not as influential as he can be.

 

Mahrez 7 - Tried and tried again which I really like. He's a confidence player and needs succesful take ons and actions in a game to feed off. Two excellent early efforts, a very good pass for the assist (even though it was just hit in a general area, just like his teammates had been doing all game until then) and some nice skill here and there. Had many unsuccesful dribbles and occasional poor decision-making while it was a customary iffy performance defensively. Work rate was very good though.

 

Kanté 9 - Back to his best. Simply everywhere and perfect timing in his interceptions. Loved when Benteke spun around to bamboozle two of our players only to find Kanté a second later knicking it off him like an adult taking a lollipop from a baby. Good use of the ball in general with a couple of customary overhit passes, but crucial to our continuous pressing all game.

 

Drinkwater 9 - So much donkey work and particularly impressed with his aerial challenge, something he's not exactly known for. Great use of the ball and made countless of supporting runs forward. Super interplay in the buildup to the penalty claim. He's only marginally less crucial to our momentum that Kanté. Simply superb.

 

Albrighton 6 - Immaculate work rate as always and is a nuisance. Crossing wasn't as poor like against Stoke and Villa, but still rather ineffectual. It's only a minor concern when we perform like this, but we do seem comparatively blunt when attacking down our left.

 

Okazaki 8 - His best game for us, in my opinion. He's staying much more on his feet, his flicks and close control have improved vastly, he's actually looking dangerous and is starting to understand his role in the team. Fantastic work levels and won the ball back on many occasions while constantly offering his support to Vardy. Should have finished off the move he started for his big chance first half. Should have had a penalty after that scintillating move which he contributed greatly to, provided the 'assist' for the second and was waiting in support for the first had Jamie not chosen to shoot. Very very encouraging development.

 

Vardy 10 - He was flawless. The only 'mistake' - if you could even call it that - was his heavy touch leading up to Mahrez' effort that was tipped over. He ran, no sprinted, all game. He scored a worldy from something that wasn't even a half-chance, he jointly provoked the error leading to the second, which was superbly finished with predatorial instincts. He constantly made superb lay offs for Okazaki and Mahrez and laid it on a plate for Okazaki for his big chance. He virtually didn't put a single foot wrong and scored with the only opportunites that presented themselves. As I alluded to in the post-match thread, this was his best ever 90 minute performance for us, even eclipsing his 1 goal 4 assists game against Man Utd last season. Unplayable. Unbelievable.

 

Subs:

Gray 5 - Saw nothing to suggest he should start ahead of Albrighton. I'm fine with him coming in for the last 10-15 minutes to get used to the speed of Premier League (read: Leicester City paced) football. He is clearly not as high-intensive a runner as Albrighton and makes wrong decisions, although this is to be expected. Needs time.

 

Ulloa N/A - Not on long enough to make an impact.

Kasper 8 Solid. Showed his ability for the offside attempt on goal

Simpson 8 Works extra hard to compensate for Mahrez's freedom of the park, part of a collective which has kept six clean sheets out of the last seven league games

Huth 8 His alleged elbow wasn't anything, another pansy footballer attempting to get someone booked by play acting. Football will be no better than netball you poofs. A wall, rarely flustered

I did give him an average+ rating. You're right in that he doesn't have as capable a defender in front of him as Fuchs does, and Liverpool correctly identified it as a chink in our armor. Simpson did his best to cope with it and Kanté and Drinkwater did a lot to support him defensively. It still doesn't take away the fact that every dangerous Liverpool attack came down his side. I feel it was more down to the Liverpool players' decision making and lack of end product that none of them resulted in a clear cut chance than it was Simpson's defending. The rating merely reflects how well he was able to stem those attacks.
