ceredigion Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 The old Football League/First Division and the modern-day Premier League has been won by 23 different clubs since 1888. They are as follows, in order of their first Championship success. Preston North End Everton Sunderland Aston Villa Sheffield United Liverpool Sheffield Wednesday Newcastle United Manchester United Blackburn Rovers West Bromwich Albion Burnley Huddersfield Town Arsenal Manchester City Portsmouth Tottenham Hotspur Wolverhampton Wanderers Chelsea Ipswich Town Leeds United Derby County Nottingham Forest Are there any clubs bigger than Leicester missing from that last? Perhaps West Ham, QPR, Stoke, Middlesbrough. I don't know, but it would be great if we became the first addition to it since 1978 and became the only club to have won the Premier League who hadn't won the old pre-1992 Football League.
Koke Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 West Ham are bigger than us. Southampton are on par with us.
Fox92 Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 West Ham. Unbelievable to think they've never won it.
Fox92 Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 Sunderland? Sunderland have won it about 5 times.
Webbo Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 Sunderland have won it about 5 times. Well spotted.
Fox92 Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 Well spotted. QPR lol lol QPR's history is pretty much similar to ours.
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 Another reason of how it would be fantastic to win the BPL. We're in a great position at present as a club and for us to win the title we would make ourselves a bigger club. Not only that, but if we can compete in the Champions League this season as well, this will add to us improving as a club in terms of stature. For me, I think we are already a big club but because we are competing in the top flight against the likes of Arsenal, Spurs, Man Utd and Liverpool we come across as a smaller club considering how much other clubs have won, trophies, honours etc. Yet in the championship, we were one of the biggest clubs in the league alongside Leeds, Forest, Derby and Sheff Wed. Of course, being in the Premiership is fantastic though and I'd much rather be in this league than in the Championship..
ajthefox Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 Are Derby and Forest genuinely the two most recent teams to win their first top tier titles? Interesting that, given we could well be the next club to do it. Cov to continue the midlands trend after us
Sampson Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 QPR's history is pretty much similar to ours. It really isn't. QPR were lower league also-rans regularly between the Second and Third divisions like someone like Doncaster or Peterborough are now until the early 1970s. I wouldn't be surprised if QPR have had less than 20 top flight seasons and the majority of them would've been in that stretch in the 1980s and early 90s.West Ham is the obvious answer to this question btw. Then teams like us, Southampton, Birmingham, Stoke, Norwich and Middlesbrough before QPR.
Lineker's Left Foot Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 Maybe we're the biggest bridesmaids in football when you consider we've never won the FA Cup either. Then again maybe Norwich are on par with us

QPR were lower league also-rans regularly between the Second and Third divisions like someone like Doncaster or Peterborough are now until the 1970s. I wouldn't be surprised if QPR have had less than 15 top flight seasons. I was talking about trophies alone. In terms of the league, they are much bigger than the likes of Doncaster and Peterborough. You have to remember that teams like Sheffield Wednesday have done exactly the same as what you suggest, floating between the second and third tier yet I'm guessing you think they are as big as us?

No because Sheff Weds have a big catchment area, a great history and could get 35-40k if they got where we are.QPR will regularly get 18k its surrounded by far bigger clubs as they didn't start competing against them until the 1970s when the catchment areas for fan bases had already well taken hold. It's only because they're London based they get talked about more in the media.

You are missing the point. Up untill 1970 they spent most of there time in div 3 and 4. We have had 1 season in the 3rd tier. They also can't sell 18k of tickets every week. Coming into money don't make you a big club.

Of course, being in the Premiership is fantastic though and I'd much rather be in this league than in the Championship.. Even Sepp Blatter would have trouble getting us into THIS season's Champions' League, but hopefully we won't need anyone's help to compete in next season's. For the last 2 seasons I have been writing LCFC blogs for one of the top online betting web sites. It was quite easy last season when Leicester were playing relatively well without reward, but I was genuinely saying throughout the season that I did not expect them to be relegated. This season, it has been a lot more difficult to find new things to say, and of course no need to justify the performances to the world. Even leading up to the Man City match, I had failed to subdue the doubters, so I must be failing somewhere!

There are plenty of clubs you'd consider to be big that have spent most of their time in divisions 2 and 3. As for your post... QPR are in a difficult area. It'd be easier to support Chelsea. We're a one club City so you cannot compare our attendances with a club like QPR. Also, I don't think QPR have ever played in division 4.
bovril Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 I always hear that Sheffield Wednesday are massive and could get 35k which is like saying that I could pull Scarlett Johansson, I mean technically it's possible but seriously unlikely to ever happen.

Hillsborough is obviously massive but they only average about 21k.
Corky Posted 7 February 2016 Posted 7 February 2016 QPR's history is pretty much similar to ours. It's not, we've won more trophies, been to more cup finals, spent more than double the time they have in the top flight.
