La Manga: an empty hotel that was apparently for sale. The squad turn up and 3 scantily clad girls are in reception. Adams says don't be stupid boys and is woken in the night by the hotel manager and police ~ allegations of violent sexual assault. The squad is put under armed guard and interviewed individually. On returning, the hotel is packed and reporters galore so Mickey implied it was publicity set up to gain revenue.

 

Leaving: couldn't contain himself under an inept Bassett and found himself manager of a group of reckless overpaid drunk schoolboys. His very first task was to raise a million. He sold and fined players to keep us going until an inevitable administration. Jesus, the shit the man went through trying to keep our team in competitive football and rebuild a club and stadium with integrity was above and beyond the call of duty. Admitted to all his mistakes but in the end it just took it's toll.

 

Lots of anecdotes about his career, playing: Razor Ruddock and more and managing; Fulham, Forest,..on and on.

 

I left like an excited schoolboy.

 

A true gentleman and a great manger in the most oppressing of circumstances. He was our Churchill in our darkest hour and I am now more proud that I chanted the name "Micky Adams" because he kept the embers burning from those ashes and created a new flame that grew to the truly wonderful things that have now been witnessed by all Leicester City supporters.

Great post mate. We never knew exactly what was going on behind closed doors but Micky Adams always struck me as an honest bloke of high integrity. And your insights back that up...

He always speaks positively about the club and was on TV the other day praising us so good on him. Brilliant in his first year, second year was a wasted chance given how many leads we lost and the third mini-season was a write off.

He spoke honestly and truthfully about everything. Didn't shy away from any topics and held his hands up to mistakes he made.

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. Danny did a good job there going on first to a crowd who hadn't come to see him. It also settled Micky down because I think he was a little apprehensive of how people might react if he was swearing during his anecdotes but after he saw the comedian he knew he could go on and feel comfortable that the audience would be fine with it.

I really enjoyed this seasons under him. Was only about 12 but used to love singing his name. I remember watching us play Gillingham, was that the first league game at the Walkers? Think the job he did getting that side promoted was pretty amazing and the team he cobbled together in the prem wasn't awful.

Ah well, it turns out the players that I've always derided Allen for signing were already signings in the pipeline when Allen took the job and were in fact, signed by Mandaric. Allen didn't rate them, didn't want to play them as he thought the team he put out was the best he could put out and Mandaric fired him for it. He says in hindsight, he never should have taken the job when he was told about the signings at his interview.

I've always said the seeds of our relegation were sewn in pre-season but it turns out I blamed the wrong man. I've certainly never blamed Holloway as he had to work with what he inherited.

The  2 matches under Martin Allen I saw Crystal Palace  and Watford  Leicester  played excellently  so cant understand why he is always listed with  the deadbeat  managers

The promotion season under Adams will always be one of my favourite seasons. During the O'Neill years there were always plenty of stupid fans moaning or wanting him gone. I still remember the letters in the Mercury from so called fans after he'd just won the League Cup for the second time, stating that he'd taken us as far as he could and it was time for him to go. They got their wish and we all know what happened next.

But that Adams season, forged in adversity, was the very first time that I'd known everyone at the club to be pulling in the same direction. It was real backs to the wall, siege mentality stuff, I loved it and always will.

This is the only season so far that has come close to it in terms of togetherness on and off the pitch.

I can't imagine our last manager being so gracious. Before you all start by saying because he was sacked etc. I don't believe he would have been gracious even if that never happened and sticking up for disgraced players is not the sign of a fair manager in my opinion. What a difference the place has become since the great CR took over. Every game he thanks the fans for our great support home and away. He has united the club, fans and players.

Absolute hero and somehow, not only keeping up afloat, but actually won promotion with all the off field problems.

I met Mickey when I was a kid

He was in the stands watching city play rothwell town pre reason, kids were queing up all game wasting their man united liverpool and arsenal shirts asking him for autographs

My dad told me to leave him bee though and watch the football, any way as we were leaving I walked past him wearing my Leicester city official scarf, bobble hat, coat, and shirt and he said " who do you support then " I didn't get the sarcasm and said " Leicester city ", he clapped me on the shoulder and walked off and spoke to Paul dickov who was getting changed in a shipping container/ away changing room, I was left awe struck

Wasn't the first, but it was my first at the new ground. 2-0 win. Can't believe Junior Lewis scored the first goal I ever saw there.

 

Nice to hear the kind words for Adams from people who went. Real shame he's never quite made the grade to be a top flight manager over a prolonged period of time - the top level of English football could do with more characters like him.

Would never have guessed someone with your username would hold that opinion tbh. Do you feel the need to comment on whether Sven, Sousa, Rob Kelly, Levein etc would have been so "gracious" out of interest?

If you've ever met Pearson or spoken to anyone that actually has or known him, you'd have quite a different outlook. Just out of curiosity, what's your view on the great CR and his backing of Danny Simpson?

 

I don't want to make this all about Pearson again, so back to the main topic. Unfortunately I didn't get to go to the Micky Adams thing, but I always liked him and I don't think I've ever met a Leicester, or football fan that's ever had a poor opinion of him. I'm glad to hear he lived up to his reputation and was a true gent on the night.

What i think the poster missed was that Micky turned down the oppotunity to goto the premier league with Aston Villa during the promotion season. Villa pursued quite hard but Micky wasn't interested

Micky mentioned that Villa made an approach for him but our chairman at the time Jon Holmes asked for a Million quid and deadly Doug wasn't prepared to pay it. Fair play to Micky he wasn't the type of manager to force through a move and was happy at City.

I was so impressed with how Micky spoke on Tuesday, I would love to be able to work with him again if I can come up with a novel idea for an evening. Maybe pairing him up with an old player?

Yet again another person obsessed with Nigel Pearson. You do realise this thread is about Micky Adams don't you? I genuinely am amazed by the people that still have something against Nigel Pearson - a manager that guided us to two league titles and top flight football after an 11 year absence. Ok so maybe when it was all fresh, I (Along with others) were bringing Pearson up quite often, I remember being accused of not being able to post without mentioning him, that over time has stopped from me, I still admire him, I still love him, I wish him well in his next job and I will 'follow' (Look at results) of wherever he ends up.

 

Now, the anti-Pearson brigade are still banging on about him, finding anything to slag him off still, it's pathetic, at the time, a few months ago, about 10 and a half infact, ok I could understand for and against arguments but now? Get over it, like most pro-Pearson supporters have.

New job running Harborough Town under-18s...

The 55-year-old will run the youth team for the Leicestershire-based United Counties League Premier Division club.
