Leicester City are prioritising new contracts for Steve Walsh and Craig Shakespeare, two hugely influential figures in the Midlands club’s remarkable season.

Walsh and Shakespeare have proven crucial working alongside manager Claudio Ranieri this term and Leicester have opened negotiations over improved deals in a bid to keep them at the King Power Stadium for the long-term.

After discovering the likes of Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante, head of recruitment Walsh’s reputation has soared and Leicester recognise that he must be rewarded for his achievements.

Walsh’s scouting team has suffered the departures of Rob Mackenzie and Ben Wrigglesworth to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal respectively over the past 12 months but Walsh is seen as the key figure in Leicester’s rise.

It is understood that he has a £1 million release clause in his contract, yet he is settled with this season’s surprise Premier League title contenders and already working on targets for the next campaign.

Shakespeare, Ranieri’s assistant manager, has also been vitally important and maintained the link in the dressing room after Nigel Pearson’s dismissal at the end of last season.

Both Walsh and Shakespeare agreed three-year deals with Pearson in June 2014 but will only have 12 months remaining in the summer, so Leicester have initiated talks over new terms.

Leicester are also mindful of the fact that Pearson is likely to move for the pair when he makes his return to management, after also working with them at Hull City.

But Leicester are confident of persuading them both to stay and are hopeful of reaching an agreement before the end of the season.

Ranieri has frequently highlighted the work of Walsh since his appointment in July and given him full control over player recruitment and scouting.

Talks are also ongoing with England under-20 international Ben Chilwell, who was watched by Arsenal talent-spotter Steve Rowley on Monday night.

Rowley was in the stand to see Chilwell play for Leicester’s under-21s against Manchester City and Arsenal remain keen to sign the 19-year-old defender this summer.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs have also regularly scouted the left-back but Leicester are keen for him to stay, recognising his vast potential and market value.

I'm surprised no one has come in for Steve Walsh with the success of our recruiting. Maybe they have who knows.

He signed a new contract in the summer didn't he? I imagine if that was the case then it no longer exists. Could have been put in his orginal contract however.

I thought Arsenal wanted him?

This is brilliant news BTW. These 2 (esp Walsh) should be given as much credit as anyone for our current position

£1m for Walsh is an absolute steal - we need to get him on a longer deal and I think he'll sign.

 

He's the big dog at the best club in the country, would he really jeopardise that to go and be Rowley's assistant at Arsenal? Or go to Derby? Not a chance. He had a career before Pearson and he has a better one now Pearson's essentially ruined his chances of another top flight job (unless he takes a club there).

 

Shakespeare I feel is a little different because he is working alongside a number of Ranieri's personally chosen assistants and likely could make the step up to management if he wanted to. Also I think him and Pearson have more history together

It's always been on my mind that Pearson would want both of them once he has a new job.

 

I really think them leaving would depend on three things. Firstly, how happy they are working with Ranieri. Secondly, how loyal they are to Pearson. Finally, which club appoints Pearson (if it were Newcastle I'd be more worried than if it was Rotherham!). 

 

I think financially they would have their salaries matched or improved if another club (or Pearson) wants them, so I doubt money would be a major issue unless we are paying them well below the market rate, or what they are worth.

 

I really hope they both sign long term deals, as although Ranieri has got a lot (or even most) of the credit this season, I'm certain the stability of them staying has helped no end in our success this season, and in my view they deserve at least as much credit as Ranieri, maybe even more, for that success.

I have a very tenuous link to Shakespeare, he's my best mate's godfather, and he sees him quite regularly.

I've asked him on a number of occasions if he thinks shakey will leave if Pearson gets a new job, apparently shakey is pretty happy.

He gets on really well with Ranieri apparently, and geography is going to be a big factor in Nige's next appointment. He didn't like going to hull because his family stayed in the Midlands (we live in Staffordshire).

Don't know anything 'itk' about Walsh, but if I had to put money on it, I'd say Shakey will be around for a while.

Nah, it's cause he is on gardening leave and still being paid. Gonna have huge bonuses in a game or two's time once we are guaranteed safety.

They want to tie them both up in case Derby takes Pearson.......

 

Is it a coincidence that Pearson's name was mutedwith the Derby job in the Summer???
