Leicester 1 - 0 Newcastle post-match

Recommended Posts

just watched the game again and I got a very different perspective from the tension filled live match. Watching live with the expectation of winning and the fear of losing and the tension that creates seemed to magnify every mistake and attach blame and negativity to the players that made them. Though he made a few errant passes and slipped a couple times at key moments I can see why the Sky Sports announcer gave Drinky Motm - he was all over the pitch and made many more good passes than the few he missed. Kante as well put in an excellent shift and could've got Motm as did Mahrez - he came so far back to help defend way more this match than I remember him doing before. Huth was a brick wall and was letting nothing by him, Morgan made some quality stops and Simpson was very good tonight. The way Schlupp, Mahrez and Fuchs saw the game out the last 4 mins was a thing of beauty. No we didn't have a technically clinical match but we were solid and kept a clean sheet against a team that had all to play for and were up for it from the start. This to me is very encouraging with half the remaining teams we play likely to play in a similar fashion. As we're learning to play different styles this second go around and adding to our repertoire we're not losing and still winning most of the games.

Haven't you been watching since November? We've allowed just about every team to enter the final third and soaked up the pressure. It's only since Bournemouth that we've been achieving possession superiority. We've already played the clinical teams and they've come away with nowt. Three games lost - one on a last ditch attack against a ten-man City. 10 clean sheets out of 19 games since mid-November. Would have been 11 but for an offside goal by Kun Aguero. It's punishing to watch them allow it to happen but if they can take it so will I :-).

Oh, **** off.

That was an utterly sh*te performance from us yesterday. Aside from Kante, it seemed like most everyone else was poor winning those 50-50 challenges. Because we weren't winning these challenges and thus gave space, Newcastle were able to push the ball up quickly into the final third, compared to other performances where we were happy to concede possession, but the build-up was ponderous and it was easy to stay compact and organized.

If Toon had any interest in actually generating shots, the concerning thing was that those opportunities and space were there. It got a little better in the second half, but at the same time, Toon had more shot-making opportunities in the second half because we had no attacking intent or cohesion, and that's what made this performance different and concerning.

I'll obviously have to re-watch the match, but that was a very very poor performance from us yesterday. The points are obviously all that matter in the end, but the run-in will be very uncomfortable if we play like sh*t like this over the coming weeks with results "balancing out". Luckily, there are fewer and fewer games for this relative slump to catch up to us.

Oddly enough it seems that all the top four teams are having an issue with poor games. Spurs fans are complaining about the pace and Pochettino's inability to rotate their squad to give the players a rest. According to the Gooners, Arsenal seems to be bottling it (and that's no secret), and Wenger has no plan. Man city fans believe Pellegrini is only concern about the CL, to the detriment of the Prem...and so on. Clearly this was a bad game. I suspect that we will have more. The only consolation will be that other teams are nackered also. This will be a grind to the end. Champions grind out wins. Let's hope at least the wins continue.

Was it good viewing? hell no! but we won without even getting outta 2nd gear infact we were probably stuck in 4th most of the game

Yes a more clinical side would've had us last night but it wasn't the case and a little bit luck and a great goal sealed it. Hopefully our usual level will be seen again for the Palace game. But let's face it if we won 7 games more like that no one would care, yes it would be torture to watch but the end result is all that matters

Have a word with yourself.  It wasn't scintillating football but it was still good enough to come away with a goal (from an overhead kick no less) and a clean sheet against Premier League opposition taking us 5 points clear at the top of aforementioned league. And like others have said we were only really threatened on a handful of occasions.  Save your overstated abuse for a legitimately shit performance and not just a sub par but match winning one.

I think the nature of this win was accentuated by benitezs arrival and not necersarily knowING for sure how Newcastle would react to it. Had they had maclaren in charge I don't think we would have been as scrappy as we were. But a win is a win. Can't complain.

I think people are underestimating Newcastle's midfield. I know they are near the bottom as a team but they have a very mobile midfield who are great at getting from box to box. Our boys had no time on the ball in the middle and we struggled to cope with that.

It is interesting really as Newcastle almost did a 'city'. Soak it up then hit on the counter. And to be fair it nearly worked for them had it been for some more clinical finishing. Some of our players look nackered too, we may need to use our squad in the final few games to see it through.

Not a pretty game but sometimes you have to win "ugly" and all Champions have had to do it.

Remember you can't get any more than 3 points from a game and that's exactly what Leicester City got to remain firmly at the top.

Roll on Palace!!

Don't know if it's been posted before but did anyone else notice our players slipping over a lot? Listening to Radio Stringer on the way in he said the pitch was being heavily watered.

Not the best performance but Newcastle were certainly playing for the new manager, they were first to the second ball and seemed to dominate midfield. Drinks had for me his worst game in a long time, he has been outstanding this season so we can forgive him a bad one. But hey the sign of a good team is to win whilst not playing well!

8 more 1-0's please!

it was pretty dreadful the way we kept slipping over. Newcastle players didn't. Could have been very costly and we usually pay attention to detail like that. Claudio has said he was pretty marked with them at half time so perhaps that's why he went onto the pitch at the end to thank each player. Notice that he didn't seem to slip !

Felt it was a little like the villa away performance last night, just lacking energy and sitting a bit deep. I hoped after we'd scored it would open up, but we never took that second chance. It was ace to see CR pump up the crowd and the impact on the team was noticeable, we are going to be important in this run in! 12th man!

Thought Vardy was poor yesterday.

About four or five times we got in decent positions to counter attack and he either stood still, ran in a straight line (thus not taking a defender away and creating no space for the player with the ball) or did what Beckford used to specialise in which is run to a position miles away from the ball and then expect somebody to ping a 60 yard ball to him when a simple run down the channel was the sensible option.

As per usual I feel like I watched another match in another dimension to some of the posters on here. They looked nervy and their passing was less accomplished than usual. A couple of Drinky's passes went astray and the defence looked stretched about three times - but no different to how it's been for the majority of games since November. You get anxious that they're being pressured so much but Schmeichel had nothing much to deal with - Newcastle had one (fluffed) chance. We had several typical quick turn around attacks which were potentially threatening but resulted in nothing.

I thought we'd give 'em a 3-0 but it turned out that they turned up and gave it a go. That was predicted by several of us - fresh manager syndrome etc. They dominated for two short periods in the respective halfs.

I thought Albrighton had a great game and Kante, as usual, was breaking up and distributing with his usual flair. Mahrez...well...is God but even he wasn't quite as amazing as he normally is.

I also thought Fuchs was a stand-out tonight. Jamie looked as sharp and as fast as ever -  he may not be scoring but he keeps the opposition on red alert all the time. I hope the lads who've been criticizing Shinji wil shut up about him for at least a week or two now. A cracking opportunist goal which was the difference between us and the terrible Toons.

I don't see how it can be a doddle to the title - they're bound to feel the awesome possibility that's looming ever nearer. Tonight they did the job - again, Newcastle are struggling for survival and had were bound to dress-to-impress. Townsend brought an urgency and a touch of class to their play when he came on.

All-in-all a workmanlike result - especially good to see them playing down the clock like they did. Yeeee-ha!

You're right about Kante, Albrighton and Townsend and, coincidentally, 3/10 (ish) would about reflect our performance in everything but the result.

We invented problems for ourselves and translated those problems into fear-filled uncertainty.

Benitez's arrival didn't change Newcastle into something wonderful. We just built a myth into our own minds. Newcastle were what they've been most of the season....an ordinary, largely uninspired team which was always destined for a relegation scrap.

We reflected exactly the same uncertainties as we did against Villa - another team we should have played to submission. When we missed our penalty to go 2-0 up we went all negative and tried to beg the game.

Last night we overcame Newcastle's initial, entirely predictable, wave of enthusiasm, started passing and moving with a bit of imagination which might have been productive but for our inexplicable lack of accuracy, but when we scored we stopped and, again, slipped into the kind of "begging" mode that almost totally mocked our ability.

It was as if someone had erected "road closed" signs around the halfway line and we simply sat back and soaked up wilfully invited pressure.

The more time passed the less willing we were to move forward as a unit. Our only ambition was to frustrate Newcastle, to stifle the game and to give people like you the impression that we'd somehow stopped a tsunami when in fact we'd calmed a few gentle waves.

Our passing was as bad as I've seen it all season. Even unpressured five-yard passes were misdirected. It was as if we were still on holiday and hadn't played with anything more accurate or reliable than a beach ball.

Apart from Vardy in creating the goal and Kante in general, we weren't winning nearly enough 50-50 balls in the air or on the ground.

We didn't have runners stretching the play other than for one 20-minute spell, our set pieces were thoughtless and unrehearsed and, as entertainment, it was about as much fun as watching teeth being extracted.

Of course the three points were welcome and many would say the means justified the end but, to me, we sold ourselves short - and for no reason I could see.

Kante MoM by miles. Absolutely stinking game and concerning because so many players were off their game tonight. Vardy was more or less invisible and our high powered pressing game was absent for most of the 90 mins. One shot on goal? If it was pressure then we are going to struggle over the line. If it was just an off day then we need to see much better vs Palace.
