Brenfox Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 I'm going to London next weekend with the missus & wondered what is & what isn't worth seeing.
z-layrex Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 -Have a drink at the aquabar in the shard and watch the sun go down. If you're lucky you'll get a table by the window. -Make sure to visit the V&A and Imperial War museum. Tower of London and Churchill war rooms are good too. London eye. -Visit borough market if you're by the shard. -Visit Camden Locke and make sure to have an Honest Burger. -Eat a steak at Gaucho's in Piccadilly. -Have dinner at Fenchurch, book ahead. London is slowly being sucked of life by the rich, but it's still worth the visit.
Webbo Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 On the same theme, I'm going Birmingham on Thursday, anything worth seeing (not the Villa obviously)
sphericalfox Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 On the same theme, I'm going Birmingham on Thursday, anything worth seeing (not the Villa obviously) James Turner Street.
Fox92 Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 St Paul's Cathedral is my favourite. Absolutely wonderful. Architecture wise superb, too. Last time I went I walked up around the top. Great sights.
Countryfox Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 On the same theme, I'm going Birmingham on Thursday, anything worth seeing (not the Villa obviously) If going by car, as you approach keep going, when you get there keep going, keep going keep going, pretty soon you'll be out the other side. If going by train, when you get there sit quietly and have a coffee whilst you wait for the first train back home. Either way glance to left and right as you travel and you'll have seen enough of Birmingham to last a lifetime.

The Blur Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 Brick Lane is worth a wander Cadbury Cafe has just opened but I think it is a pop up venture so it will not be open for very long (you will need to book ahead though) Madame Tussads is good but expensive and crowded Primrose Hill for a nice vantage point of London (it is near to Camden Lock so you can walk from there) Science Museum is good fun with some interactive displays Ice Bar If you follow Fox92's suggestion of going to St Paul then go to One New Change shopping mall and take a lift all way to top for another great vantage point (Dont worry, you do not have to buy drinks from the rooftop bar)
separator Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 -The southbank between London Bridge & Blackfriars train station has Borough Market, Clink prison, Shakespeare's globe, Tate modern plus a few riverside bars, all within 10 minutes walk of each other. -If you have an Oyster card you can use that on the boats now so can travel along the Thames for a couple of quid. -Avoid Oxford Street, its shit. The 2 Westfield centres at Shepherds Bush & Stratford are nicer for shopping. -Greenwich for the Maritime museum & the Cutty Sark.
Countryfox Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 Lost our Oyster cards but found out you can use your credit card on the reader instead. Handy !!
Guest ttfn Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 Assuming you've seen all of the standard stuff before Borough Market is the best non-tourist thing to do or see. Hampstead is well worth a visit as well - a nice village about 10 minutes on the tube from central London and you can go for a wander (and more if you have similar hobbies to George Michael) on the Heath. Best thing about those 2 are that they're free. Other people have suggested things with a "wow" factor but assuming you're not made of money these are nice things to do without having to spend a penny.

Don't spend a penny if George Michael is about.
Itsthejoeker Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 Bodeans BBQ Amen to this. There's a stall on Borough Market that does the best ever cheese toastie.
SystonFox Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 Hackney Marshes for a kick about with Ian Wright and Eric Cantona. PARK LIFE

Its very touristy these days, still worth a visit though, there's a farm from Rutland that have a stall there, do decent sausages & burgers. Few nice pubs around there as well.
Renart Posted 20 March 2016 Posted 20 March 2016 Borough Market is very touristy - trust me, I often work there and live just round the corner - but if you have never been there then it is definitely worth a look - go into Neal's Yard Dairy and try the Cheese. If it is Saturday that you are there then be aware that by midday it can become uncomfortably busy. However, I have to remind myself that I live in London and therefore I don't see it with a tourists eyes, i.e. I try to avoid crowds these days as I am usually doing day-to-day stuff and not in that relaxed mode of being on a jolly. There is a smaller street market nearby to Borough called Maltby Street, which can be quite good fun (the Little Bird Gin bar is good).http://www.maltby.st/. Even this is a little 'touristy' these days - but read my disclaimer from earlier about me not looking with the eyes of a tourist. Walking to it from Borough Market you might pass through Bermondsey Street - which can be quite nice. If you follow the railway arches on and out the other end of Maltby Street you will finally get to Spa Terminus - http://www.spa-terminus.co.uk/producers/. This is a Saturday morning producers market - which is a bit scattered and random; on a Saturday morning the Kernel Brewery opens its doors and you can go and have a pint there - be aware that it closes at lunch time though. I am quite a foody so these things might not appeal.
fuchsntf Posted 23 March 2016 Posted 23 March 2016 Borough Market. Camden Market. Including the food stalls, where you can choose your various menus, and sit down on/in common area tables.Handy if in a group /kids who prefer different dishes. Also look up little venice, cafes and pubs on boats and the quay. Convent Garden, London Dungeons. St Pauls for a peoples cathedral can be expensive. The Tower.Actually go online and look at London museums, because to do all of them justice, you might need to make a choice.I have been to London many times, even lived there, but each Museum to do credit, needs at least 1/2 a day. I loved the British Museum and The natural History, been to both 3-5 times, and still havent seen them thoroughly. There are other gems, like the Imperial war museum, Churchills war rooms/chambers. Crime museum Scotland yard,or transport museum. If you would like doing a london old pubs crawl...look online and chose.
Guest Mee-9 Posted 24 March 2016 Posted 24 March 2016 If you're a history buff go and have a wander round the Tower of London. Do a little research before you go but you'll have an enjoyable few hours. Just don't feed the ravens!
Durnerz Posted 24 March 2016 Posted 24 March 2016 Borough Market is awesome, grab a chorizo roll from Brindisa.Westfield Shepherds Bush is where I normally park £8 all day and easy to get to and from the M1.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 24 March 2016 Posted 24 March 2016 Best thing about London is the road outta there AMIRITE LADS
Great Boos Up Posted 24 March 2016 Posted 24 March 2016 Strange. I must have driven through and around London hundreds of times for work appointments and seen every sight there is to see over the last 20 years through my car window. But I've never actually taken the time to go and look. Must take the wife.
separator Posted 24 March 2016 Posted 24 March 2016 The Wellcome Collection across the road from Euston Station is worth a visit, a weird and wonderful museum / art / cafe place about the human body & mind amongst other things.
Fox92 Posted 25 March 2016 Posted 25 March 2016 Lost our Oyster cards but found out you can use your credit card on the reader instead. Handy !! Yeah, I just used my contactless card last month to get to Arsenal and back. Very easy and quick.
