I must be getting old...

Recommended Posts

I was texting my younger cousin this morning, and i realised that his use of "txt speak" really got on my metaphorical tits. I know its something i used to do all the time, but i never realised how stupid and retarded it must have made me look, until now.

So it got me thinking - is there anything that you see in the younger generations that annoys you, but you know that you were probably the same at their age?

Lack of respect for us of the older generation.

Charging round on mopeds with baffles removed from the exhaust.

"Snogging" whilst moving ones head in a rapid circular motion.

Standing outside a shop with 3 mates and asking an adult (me in this case) to "get us 10 Rothman's mate"

Why even text talk now? With autocorrect it's easier to spell properly and the constant red line or auto changing of words must be annoying and make it either illegible or longer as you need to change it back to what you initially wrote!

The only person that I know that text talks is my older relatives as they still have old phones instead of touch screen where it actually is quicker

I think that's what annoys me about it. they either must go back and change the wording to make it shorter, or just add the shortened words to the auto-correct dictionary.

i often look at the way kids behave and wonder if i was ever truly like them?

For me; it is registering onto a site and having to scroll down to find my year of birth. Kids today don't have to scroll. They don't know they're born!

The time to worry is when your dob is beyond the cut-off point.

Young people make me sick. Moaning about the fact they can't afford houses. Whining about their non-existent pay rises and crappy pensions. Being nice to immigrants. Crying about student loans. They should know their place and have some respect for their elders.

I don't like their clothes. Especially shirts with the top button done up even though they're not wearing a tie. And baseball cap on backwards. As far as I'm concerned if your name isn't Slater or Zack and you don't live in southern california and you're not a skateboarder and you're not 14 years old then you shouldn't be wearing a baseball cap, in any direction.

They all date back years though. My first bike was a pre-mix oil 2-stroke so I used to bung loads extra oil in to make it extra smelly and smokey. Air filter off for more noise, sounded and looked proper shit but I loved it!

Newer things I don't understand:

- selfies/pouting. Men pouting is unforgivable. Get someone else to take the photo and smile or pull a funny face just don't pout like a cvnt

- those big nappies that 17 year olds put on their car bonnets

- people on Xbox with names like "MaJJIxcZZZZ" or "iLLuzzzzzionXXX"

- walking up the street listening to shit music through the phone's speaker. Not just in a group, I've seen individuals doing this. Get some headphones you cvnt

I bet you'd wear a baseball cap if it could get you Kelly Kapowski.

Every generation complain about how the youths have no respect for the elders. My parents complained about video games and hip hop music. My grand parents complained about the 1970s and 80s rock scene filled with booze and sex.

It's human nature.

mums and dads are the only ones who still use "text language".

"r u ok? ring me l8r if u can. c u soon lv u xx"

everyone with a smartphone texts in normal words because as db11 says it basically makes you. iphones change anything spelt wrong to a proper word even if it's not the right one. and the fact that the keyboard doesn't have numbers displaying means it is so much more effort to type a 4 instead of the word "for" etc.

leeds festival is the only place that's ever properly made me feel old. used to go when i was 16/17 etc and think of how big it was, how scary some of the folks in the crowd were. went (for the final time) last year and realised how much busier it got at almost exactly 1pm on the thursday and someone told us it was cos it's gcse results day so all the kids have to wait until after the thursday morning to go. as a bunch of 22/23 year olds that hit home. had to keep an extra careful eye out for who we were blagging that weekend lol

I'm fairly young myself so I'm probably included in the 'young' term, but I have a lot of respect for the elderly people of our society. They have experience and wisdom which is highly valuable to us and myself, they are absolutely worthy of being treated nicely and politely (as is everyone).

Also, although 'we' tend to get grouped into one in terms of the perception of the young, I do understand why, as the world has changed vastly throughout the years of the elderly folk being alive. You know, it's probably difficult to understand and come to terms with how the young live nowadays. I get that, but like to think of myself, that I'm a respectful youth and in all honestly I wouldn't say I'm the general rule or perception of what a young person is supposedly like.

Of course, not a dig or anything, just my own perception of being young.

I do realise this is generalising and patronising, but a lack of respect seems quite ubiquitous among the youth. Then again I suspect as an adolescent you want to break norms, test yourself and rebel while you still don't have other responsibilities. In a way, it's good that they do test the tolerance of society, as without that we wouldn't be reminded where our tolerance levels are.

yeah it's not a time thing it's literally just what happens when you get old...

This seems to have turned into a "let's just complain about young people" thread. That wasn't quite my intention, considering that I'm "only" 28,. But still, it's nice to know I'm not the only one who comes across as a miserable old git
