Number 6 Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 Has Shinji been hustling all this time? Probably the best I've ever seen him play for us, looked class.

He started virtually every game for the team that won the league so he must have already been pretty good. Don't forget that last season was his first in English football and he adapted bloody well all things considered. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if he kicks in even more this season. Shinji is class.

Watching that performance, it's what I expected, some players not up with the pace yet, silly mistakes, and players who look like they could be good signings. Overall I'm excited about the season, when we field our strongest 11, we have a very strong team, and have good players pushing for a starting place, if the players who start don't perform. Bored of the summer without decent football, so bring on the new season. This.
Guest Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 I'm happy enough. At 3-2 down we had a stonewall penalty against Barcelona. Loved the fizz especially in the second half. I'd really like Was in the team, he has looked so good and he'll never give up on a ball. Gray looked great, Musa scored two fine goals, Vardy didn't look too far of the pace ... In fact Mahrez was the least spectacular of our players today.
fox_favourite Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 Overall, I think it wasn't a bad performance. It did show that Simpson is our weak point, and either needs to step up, or we need someone else there. Musa obviously really impressed, but so did Drinky. He was a rock in the middle and he looks like he'llcontinie his form from last season. Gray is going to be good for us and I think Amarty will be good as a utility player. Seems to be able to play a few different positions. Oh and Schlupp really surprised me. He was a busy player yesterday. If he can more consistent, then he can be a very good player. Okazaki did well. All-in-all, yesterday was a good exercise and hopefully we can kick on. I am a little concerned with this pre-season with all the travelling involved, but let's hope we look at the positives. Onto Saturday now!!

Football is a very psychological sport and we built our foundation, last season, on having one of the meanest defences in the league. We had that run of one nils, I recall, where Morgan and Huth were just about unbeatable. We basically knew that if we scored, we'd win...we were never gonna concede. In the last two games, albeit against top opposition, we've shipped 8 goals. The defence has looked amateurish at times and we've been cut apart at will. Tonight's game could easily have been 6-2 at half time. Even though it's a friendly, this isn't good. The players will have it in their minds that they now can concede. I looked closely at Morgan after the Munir goal went it and he was frustrated as fook...throwing his arms to his side as if to say wtf! Its imperative we now shut up shop (or at least not concede many) on Sunday cos a lack of defensive confidence quickly becomes endemic. Whether this is due to the standard of opposition, fitness levels, or the lack of such a quality midfielder as Kante, shielding the back four, remains to be seen. What is clear now though, is that we must get back to being the defensively solid side we built our success on. Another three or four goals conceded on Sunday against Utd won't be good for confidence. Worth mentioning Col we were 2-0 down against Birmingham at half time of our last pre season game last year. The players need real training time to sort it out. The training will have been fitness based, now it's tactical and there's opportunity to drill the back four about keeping shape. That third goal you talk about was an absolute beauty of a pass by Suarez. This is two thirds of a frontline what scores four or five against Real Madrid and the same could be said of a PSG side (though I think the climate was a big factor in that with PSG having a longer period out there).
Guest Col city fan Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 I think the future does look bright. Ranieri clearly saw where we were struggling and subbed off the players at half time who needed to come off. Going forward we were weak..as in physically. Introducing Musa gave their defence a battle and he looks a real threat IMO. Schlupp injected pace into the attack and strength and suddenly it was game on. I think it WAS a penalty which would have evened things up. It will be interesting to see who starts on Sunday. I'd like a Vardy/Musa combo up front.

I'd always have him as an option. If WE have no idea what he'll do, imagine how the opposition must feel..

Re: Simpson He is missing Kante more than most, Albrighton and Fuchs had a good understanding on the left whereas on the right Mahrez was given license to attack and one of Kante's jobs was to protect Simpson from being overloaded. It it was also clear that narrowing the pitch and forcing them out wide won't be effective against a team like Barca. Their youth team has more imagination and creativity than any PL team. You show a PL player a load of space out wide they will run into and whip a cross in to our congested box. Meat and drink to Huth and Wes. Give Messi or Suarez time and space out wide they can play an inch perfect pass to their fellow forwards exposing our weaknesses, they aren't going to play to our strengths, put a cross in and lose possession.
blurryface Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 If you could tattoo video, then Musa's goal would be going on my forearm. Unreal goal. Okazaki's flick on was tasty too. We were never gonna win and any result would have fooled us, it was a typical friendly and we came out making a good account of ourselves. I cannot wait for Musa and Vardy to shred Eric Bailly and Smalling on Sunday. (Oh and Wasyl had Suarez shook)

I was saying the same thing to my brother as we were watching the game, it's definitely something Ranieri needs to look at (and I'm sure he is doing) as that is pretty obvious weak point. As you say, Kante's brilliance covered it up last season and I'm not sure it's Mendy's natural game. No point crying over it now but this is why, of the 3 'crown jewels' (Vardy, Mahrez & Kante), N'Golo was the one we could least afford to lose IMHO.
Guest Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 Enough with going on about Kanté. He left us - he could have stayed but said he wanted to go. Mahrez defensive issues are a problem and he exposes Simpson which makes simpson look worse than he is. We just have to hope that Mahrez attacking genius outweighs his defensive weaknesses. Against poorer opposition - which is everyone but I'm particularly talking about the bootom half of the prem then we'll need Mahrez to open up tight defences and his defensive liability won't seem so bad as the quality isn't there. It's against teams like Arsenal who can open you up where he may need to be subbed for the Vardy, Musa, Zaki combination. I need to say that Wasyl has been our best CB in pre-season. I hope he's given a fair crack in training as he's not that much older than Morgan and Huth.

He does have moments/matches where he is brilliant, but he can be too inconsistent sometimes. He impressed me yesterday, he just needs to be a little more consistent. I've always liked Schlupp, though and want him to do well. I think he needs to settle on one position, I would say wing, and work on his game to play that way. 35 minutes ago, Captain... said: Re: Simpson He is missing Kante more than most, Albrighton and Fuchs had a good understanding on the left whereas on the right Mahrez was given license to attack and one of Kante's jobs was to protect Simpson from being overloaded. Simpson worries me as he switches off too often. I'll put my hands up and the second half of the season he did play very well and just did the basics very well. But he still worries me from time to time. Yes, you are correct in that he is left a bit exposed at times by Mahrez, but that wasn't the issue for one of the goals. It was Simpson switching off and not being aware of the players around him. Would you prefer to see Albrighton on the right helping Simspon out? Or what would you hope to see as a better option to him being exposed?
AKCJ Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 Okazaki looked like he's got 3 inch studs. Didn't see him trip over once.

Thanks, I've watched it in full already just wondered if anyone had the clip so that I could send it to a couple of friends. Typical Was tackle.
Benji Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 What is clear is that Barca are a world away from anything in the premier league. Our pace and desire to win the ball in the second half really caught them off guard so I can't wait for the CL to start because I think we'll really surprise a few teams in the "slower" leagues, but their sheer quality on the ball and ability to always look like they have an extra man in possession is extraordinary. I've never watched a team like it before in person and Messi's movement and passing is just a joy to watch. I cant see United being anything close to that good on Sunday.

SportsNut1908 Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 Only one worry: Too high a line. i know Ranieri wants to press even higher up the pitch (as has been mentioned by many jouno's) and to stay compact it requires the defensive line to push but I don't like it. Barely ever were Morgan & Huth exposed over the top last season. It happened many times in the first half alone. Will wait to see how this develops but hope it was a one off.
Countryfox Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 They like to do a '5 things we learnt' in the Leicester Mercury ... so what have we (as in me) learnt from that .... In no particular order ... Musa has definitely got it ! Amartey is going to be good and is full of running. Simpson weak link ?? Good back up keeper. Shinji and Jeff are important to us ... do not sell !! Whats your 5 ?

Good observation and very true! Yes, Kante has sodded off (the little swine!) but that 'shield' of the back four was utterly crucial last season. I cannot emphasize this enough. It was the reason why we conceded so many goals in the previous season, where opposition midfielders were strolling past Cambiasso and James at will, and it COULD be an issue this season coming. Defenders don't often make 'calamitous errors'. We saw that Morgan and Huth made very few last season and Simpson was a revelation. They looked different animals last night. Simmo was poor, Morgan and Huth were utterly exposed in the first half and young Chilwell looks...young... If we play this high line, it will leave spaces behind and its up to the midfield to have the energy to get back (into the pocket between the centre circle and the penalty area) to clean up. We did this brilliantly last season and I so hope we continue to do it next term.
foxy boxing Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 it is a learning curve we must remember that it was a good performance against the best team on the planet, the more we play teams like barca and psg the better we will be. it has shown us that musa can actually play football and he knows where the net is.it will take time we have brought in a number of players that will develop into the team they just need game time to get going.the question is what system do we employ and how we set up but the sighns look good
los dedos Posted 4 August 2016 Posted 4 August 2016 So ulloa didn't get on the pitch anyone know why.
