The Last Of Us Part II

Recommended Posts

I was asked earlier today by work to go on an inhouse all day training session starting at 7:30am tomorrow...

Of all the days they choose the day TLOU 2 will be released.

Also that start time is going to kill me off thanks to my lockdown sleep schedule

I can't see horizon being out anywhere close to launch, they'd have stated holiday 2020 like they did with spiderman to get some hype. Probably next March or October.

This was confirmed by Guerilla Games yesterday.  Expected sometime in 2021.  No firm date but certainly won't be a launch title.

So how is the video game equivalent of The Last Jedi with gameplay mechanics straight out of 2013 holding up?  lol

Either some people just have an agenda or, alternatively, it really is that bad.  Metacritic does not make for a good read.

The actual gameplay/mechanics is basic and nothing to write home about so I see some people's point even if they're, typically, extremist Internet forum views.

Having said that, I've been playing it for 9 hours straight with no intention to stop. It's a bloody good game. I do however understand why some people don't like. If you're after escapism for gaming, this certainly isn't it!

I get a gamer gate vibe from the majority of the criticism, nearly exclusively young men seem to hate with this game because of what it represents more than anything else. All this talk of trans because there's a muscly woman in the game and how it's all gone to pot as a result, I'm all for valid criticism but the meta stuff is just little entitled weirdos giving the game 1/10 before they've even played it, as if this game by one of if not the most consistently high quality modern day game studio is a 1 out of 10, its just absurd.

played about 3 to 4 hours and wow. thank god i didn't read the spoilers or anything. immense game at the moment.

Yeah same here, Naughty Dog are trying to finish us off here aren’t they. Hopefully get through a fair chunk of it later today.

Going straight from playing Uncharted 4 to this has taken some adjusting to I’m not going to lie lol.

So...considering the pro reviews, this is:

- worth getting

and

- the negative review-bombing is almost entirely the work of incels afraid that "their turf" is being somehow polluted by more inclusive characters in reasonably typical basement-dweller style

Yes?

The fact that the digital version of this game is only a fiver more expensive than the physical version at the moment just shows how overpriced it is.

I might get it but only at 35 to 40 quid.  If PS5 is out before the price drops that far, I'll end up leaving it like I did the first one and get the upscaled version.

I'll wait until I've finished the game before putting my proper thoughts here. But I'm sat here working from home and dwelling on playing this through my lunch. Whatever people think of this, it's certainly got me hooked!

The negative reviews it is getting is insane this early on.

I've played about 10 hours and I am loving it. the mechanics aren't the best but the graphics are amazing, and so far, the story is developing into what could be an amazing game.

So i've finally started playing. Got it on release day but been too busy. Just finished the patrol with Dina and Ellie.

First impressions, im not quite sure. The player movement isn't clean and the dodge mechanic is messy. Graphically it looks great but it looks like a carbon copy of Uncharted 4.

Im sure the story will still grip me and ill still love it, but people going out saying greatest game ever is nonsense and the reviews of it bombing is equally nonsense.

Im only 2 hours in so early days yet

I’m dead against “inclusiveness”  resulting in the removal of  “toxic masculinity” in gaming totally and shoe horning in every minority group imaginable into every game just to be PC. If you want to tell a story about straight white men then you tell a story about straight white men and you should be able to do it without the media asking where the minority’s are.

Its absolutely fine in that regard from what Ive played so far, I don’t know what people were expecting really the foundations of the apparent over the top wokeness (which is non existent) were firmly laid in the first game and its dlc. The whole thing feels pretty natural and unforced. I will however say there a few people I know who have done the whole thing who heavily bemoan the story arc regardless of any political stance it’s trying to make so maybe not all of the bad press is born out of political persuasions.

You can see nuance a mile off, I know a few people who have big gripes with the direction the game takes, story beats, some dated mechanics etc, nothing wrong with anyone outright hating the game either, you can't say I like it so your opinion is wrong, unless of course that opinion is '1 out of 10 sjw Neil cuckman has ruined everything', at that point it's not the game itself you dislike but what you seem to think it represents.

the story is definitely forced and more obvious as you play. the major thing wrong is that the characters aren't even that likeable imo. they're trying to make you see it from their point of view but when you don't feel much for their character you end up not really caring.

Thanks for the insight, it's good to see there is some more nuanced criticism of the plotline coming out. I'm pretty sure it isn't going to be perfect, and likely not even as highly regarded as the first one, but it does still sound like it's worth a look.

Thing is, the vast majority of the criticism up until and even after the release could basically be summed up as that bolded part, which was the point I was making. Like you, I have no problem with legitimate gripes about the mechanics and even about the character arcs but it was rather clear that most people were not disliking the game but what they thought it represented, hence my line about incel basement-dwellers because that's a typical sign of their own insecurity.

Darkness-induced audience apathy is definitely a thing - was one of the reasons I didn't really like No Country for Old Men, for instance. However, that's a legit criticism, but I don't see what that has to do with some vast conspirational claims of "wokeness" that the review-bombing thieves of good oxygen claim.

i don't care what it represents tbh. i go by what i play and what i enjoy. and this game nosedives massively imo

And that's fine - what I was referring to was, rather clearly, criticism of the game that is based purely on daft prejudice which seems to form a lot of the criticism right now.

My only real ACTUAL criticism so far is the melee gameplay is terrible and not really fun. I get its a survival game, it's supposed to be a struggle fighting off flailing wild zombies, you're not a ninja.

But it's frustrating that it's the camera that makes it shit, when you've dodged and the camera doesn't track so you've now got no idea where what you're hitting has gone even though your character is looking at it still.

But given combat and gameplay has never really been the point of the game I don't mind too much really.

Only other point is that what made the first one so gut wrenching was being able to connect with Joel, Ellie and their situation, to buy in to their relationship and to really feel for this character you were protecting. It's like the whole thing was one big escort mission with a subject you cared about.

It reminded me a lot of Bioshock Infinite like that.

Problem now is, well, yknow (spoilers). And I just don't find Dina engaging. She's not charming, she's a slightly smug know it all with weak banter who gets in the way and has an immersion breaking obsession of standing there with her flashlight on when I'm perilously creeping around.

I'd call it a solid 8 so far and I'm enjoying it, it's the same suspense for the most part as the first, clickers are still enormously unsettling, the environment is absolutely stunning and I'm genuinely interested in the mystery of Abby and the WLF.

But being honest, the first was always gonna be hard to top.

Pretty much word for word what I would have said. Im now onto Seattle Day 2. 8 hours in. Im really enjoying the game. The dodge mechanic is affected by the camera though. But not a huge problem, just an annoyance.

Dina, you are hiding from an enemy and she just decides to get up and run in plain sight to another hiding spot, right in the view of the enemy but they don't do anything lol.

As good as the game is though, it is ultimately an Uncharted 4 / Lost Legacy rip off (which I suppose took ideas from TLOU anyway) same mechanics and layout (With Seattle Day 1, similar to Lost Legacy with the 'open world' section)

I love Uncharted 4 though so im not bothered, Graphically I think U4 is better.
