what to expect when you play a Spanish team

I meant this as the total opposite - Cakir broke up the play constantly. There were 40 fouls in total (1 nearly every 2 minutes), which is astounding when you consider Michael Oliver gave just 13 in our match against Liverpool the other week. He was appalling in that game (for both teams I felt) and he was generally considered atrocious on here (not always a good benchmark to judge against). The referee from the first leg in Sevilla was brilliant and whilst I don't think we'll get him again, I think we've avoided two of the worst from this weeks fixtures.

Think I may have had a memory lapse

I'm sure there was a few occasion he waved away (I hope :|) but can remember Porto diving a lot.

" suarez and neymar were looking for contact" yeah, the same with vardy every time he thinks he can get a pen. And than some people question why they are disliked by other fans.

Being a cheat and being a hypocritical cheat are totally deferent things.

What did the pot say to the kettle? You're a diving cheat!

Neymar and Suarez were so embarrassing last night that it was funny but who's laughing now, they are, they're through. Defenders are on a hiding to nothing, foul them and it's a foul with likelyhood of a card, win the ball cleanly and it's a foul, any physical contact at all it's a foul, near physical contact by being within two inches of opponent is a foul. According to Ronaldo and those two by their reactions they have never ever been tackled cleanly in their lives, every challenge on them is a foul. Yes, as talented players they will be fouled more often than most other players but they've now made an artform of looking for it, something Vardy does as well, from unusually angled trailing legs rotating and fishing for a contact to beginning their dives before any contact is made to overacting in their reconstruction mimes (Suarez being "strangled" last night). Just wish there was retrospective action on it or that someone shows them what a painful challenge actually looks like.

From our perspective if we can get Mahrez high up the pitch enough to weave into the box as he does so well and 30,000 shout "Heyyyyyyy" (not like Fonzie, but like Spaniards do) as soon as he's breathed on by an opponent then maybe we'll have some penalties of our own. Knowing our luck if Vardy tries his leg trailing he'll get cards, he's not established enough at the top table of UEFA to get away with the nonsense the others do.

Maybe we should all go to the game dressed as The Fonz. Now that would be funny. Heyyyyyy!!

I was looking at the Wiki about the former president of Athletico Madrid the last time we played them. The guy was Jesus Gil and it was an allegation that he tried to influence the result of the game at Filbert Street (it was never proven though some have their suspicions). Maybe , based on what went before, we should give President Trump a call before Tuesday!

Gil was famous and controversial for his extreme right-wing political views, summed up in a unique brand of foulmouthed, low-brow populism[5] punctuated by self-aggrandizing,[6] sexist,[7] homophobic,[8][9] racist,[10][11] xenophobic and otherwise derogatory[12] remarks and, occasionally, by pre-democratic nostalgia.[13]

He publicly referred to former Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) town councilor Isabel García Marcos as a "whore" during town council meetings and, on one occasion, dubbed journalist Carmen Rigalt as "la jinetera del periodismo" (prostitute of journalism). The Málaga coastline, effectively under the area of economic and political influence of the Gil family, became a popular residence for British, Italian, and Russian gangsters while he was mayor, as well as a haven for former Nazis either awaiting or avoiding extradition, such as Otto Remer and Léon Degrelle. At the same time, however, Gil instigated several crackdowns on drug users and prostitutes. He was involved in several criminal cases, including the so-called Caso de las camisetas.[3] and Caso Atlético.[4]

Crime rates and open manifestations of poverty decreased dramatically during the first years of his administration but this apparent success was obtained at the expense of civil liberties, including the beatings of delinquents and prostitutes, deportation of foreigners with low incomes, handouts of money to homeless people in exchange for leaving town, etc. The subsequent apparent improvement in the lifestyle of a segment of the population was cited as a main reason for his re-election.[14]

He has been compared in the Spanish news media to Donald Trump, because of some parallels in their lives and character

I was watching the Barcelona vs PSG game last night. Suarez was throwing himself down the the penalty area like he had been shot. It eventually paid off for them as the ref was intimidated into awarding a penalty that changed the game. I was at both Athletico games and remember the ref was shockingly bad, especially in the game at Filbo. I am expecting something similar at the KP, alot of diving, rolling around and penalty claims. Does anybody know who the ref will be for the game? All we ask is that he is fair. I suspect that maybe he might be got at . It wouldnt be the first time.

Referee has been announced as Remi Harrel.

Also noteworthy Jesus Gil started out as a construction firm owner, responsible for one of the worst accidents in Spanish construction history, when a badly-manufactured gated community complex collapsed in 1969, killing 58 people.

Here he is in all his former glory - of course, even today you won't find many of his former business contacts and "friends" openly admitting their distaste for the man:

This thread reeks of hypocrisy. Its as if some of you think top level english football is played in the true spirit of sport.

It isn't most of us agree but if you think we have anything like the cheating that occurs at Barca or Real Madrid then you can't watch much Spanish football. They are the best two cheats in Europe.

As far as I'm concerned your arguing about shades of grey. English football has allowed diving, feigning injury, time wasting, asking for other players to be booked etc etc to become common practice so we as fans can not moan about other countries doing it. I agree with you about barca and real but we can not act self righteous just because like most aspects of football they are better at it than us.

Barca and Real Madrid rely on cheating to a significantly higher level than any team I've witnessed. If refs clamped down equally on all teams including our own, the two top Spanish teams would suffer the most as they are by far the biggest cheats. If that's arguing shades of grey then so be it. It's still true.

Cheating is cheating matey it's like murder granted the Spanish leauge are the equivalent of the Yorkshire ripper and we are some young lad who stabbed someone in a botched robbery.

But we can't call the Yorkshire ripper for being a murderer because we are both a pair of murderous bastards.
