Schmeichel beat off stern competition from Borussia Monchengladbach’s Andreas Christensen, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen and Werder Bremen’s Thomas Delaney to win the accolade for the second year running. Posting on his official Instagram page, Schmeichel said: “Very happy to have been voted the Danish Footballer of the Year for the second year running. Thanks to all the people who voted.” The stopper, named 2016 Danish PFA Player of the Year in January, has been in sensational form for Leicester City in recent weeks and has kept five clean sheets in six UEFA Champions League appearances this term. His two penalty saves during the last-16 tie with Sevilla proved pivotal to City’s qualification for the quarter-finals, while a brace of huge stops to deny Andy Carroll on Saturday helped record a first away win in the Premier League this season. Last term, Schmeichel recorded 15 shutouts in 38 Premier League appearances en route to City’s sensational top flight title triumph. Now away with Denmark on international duty, the ‘keeper could be in action at the Telia Parken Stadium on Sunday, when his nation host Romania in a 2018 World Cup qualifier. StanSP Posted 21 March 2017 Posted 21 March 2017 Thoroughly deserved and can't really see who else it could have been apart from Christian Eriksen. Schmiechel has done us and his nation proud with his performances. Top class.
AKCJ Posted 21 March 2017 Posted 21 March 2017 Thought Delaney was superb when he played against us at the KP for Copenhagen.
fuchsntf Posted 21 March 2017 Posted 21 March 2017 Mentioned it before... Goes automatically into leicesters book of fame of Goalkeepers... Never understood the OTT criticism, over the years. Even my schoolboy heroes Banks, then Shilton made errors and mistakes. I have seen great goalkeepers make out of the world saves, then get lambasted in the same game, for a positional error or...then .the gks nightmare, let it trickle through their legs...!!! Strikers can miss shot after shot, then score one, but will never suffer the high level of criticism has Goalkeepers... Schmeichel, secures and brings home the bacon,(danish) I for one have always been happy he signed for and stayed with us..... Either He or Simpson our POS this year. One the best actual "instinctive shopstoppers" I have ever seen.

One the best actual "instinctive shopstoppers" I have ever seen. I agree he's right up there for us.... But it's very difficult to put him alongside Banks and Shilton given what those two achieved in football and not just here (both being among the greatest goalkeepers ever and Banks in particular is one of the very very best ever). I was always a big critic of Kasper in his first few seasons here, but he has really progressed in the last year or so.
Koke Posted 21 March 2017 Posted 21 March 2017 Schmeichel has come a long way. Remember when he dropped the ball into his own net against Doncaster. Or when he stupidly gave away a 94th minute penalty at Blackpool. Or when he got sent off against Forest for being a petulant child. He's at his peak now. Top 3/4 keeper in the league and a club legend.
Clever Fox Posted 21 March 2017 Posted 21 March 2017 Kasper is a shining example to Fans who are to quick to criticise new signings. Kasper has improved year on year here and is now one of the best in the league. The one area he's improved immensely is coming for crosses. It's such an important part of Goalkeeping as it nullifies the opposition attack immediately. He's already becoming a legend here joining with our great tradition of Goalkeepers. Well done and definitely deserved.

He has stepped up massively though and we're lucky to have him.
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 21 March 2017 Posted 21 March 2017 One of the best keepers in the top flight, and proven he's good enough at elite level in the Champions League. Top keeper, fully deserved.
foxy boxing Posted 21 March 2017 Posted 21 March 2017 fully deserved. one of the best in form keepers at the moment who has made crucial saves in games and has the respect and confidence of all his teammates

Richard Posted 21 March 2017 Posted 21 March 2017 Could see him leaving in the summer, probably more likely than Drinkwater or Mahrez

I was always a big critic of Kasper in his first few seasons here, but he has really progressed in the last year or so. Social media, allows the great and miserable information to be exchanged and remembered easier. I Climbed shortly through the sporting highs of Leicester, Midlands and UK, but due to injuries only got mentioned(Rightly) in dispatches. I was one of many Bentley apprenticeship boys. Met many of the real top Leicester and UK Sportsman at the time, never believed in silly airs and graces. The humble honesty of many a top sportsman Of that period and those gone by, wore another shirt. That said, arrogance, belief in ones self Importance by some was also a constant companion. It never stopped amazing me how some people, still try to dig out the contemptious negative towards successfull People. Around the firms in the near of Tigers, L.city, County cricket, even the old Blaby boys, everybody wanted a piece. That in itself would stir up the local opinions on potential, greatness, weaknesses, downright lies to prove sometype of Knowledgeable association... When Banks was sold, the shopfloors/pubs at the time went into meltdown on the Banks or Shilton Situation. I knew many, who didnt see Banks has the future, others who considered it a might too early for Shilton to be given that recognition.. "opinions or trying to compare the uncomparable " keeps the beautifull game in fact all sports ticking... Banks, Shilton, Clemence, Wallington, Jennings...got to know and commanded their penalty area, but sometimes lost 1 on ones. Despite that Pele-Banks save, over the years I thought Shilton was a better shotstopper, plus has he Collected experience his with the others mentioned highball contention and punches, went up that small notch. Banks with Yashin, were Perhaps the first Of the great technical, and area commanding/highball defending GKs. Others followed and actually improved upon their top ideas/true talent , and weaknesses. It could be argued that the top 6-10 gks in the world after the 70s and today, are way above those 2 greats of yesteryear. Georgie Best, Jennings, never reached The highest achievements on the World stage, not even competing regular in last Stages of finals. We fans, by pulling out comparisons, going to far in negative details can undermind and underestimate, Good and honest Sporting careers. If you believe certain Sporstman/women are far better, does it make the others over any generation less brilliant, or earn less plaudits...... I for one saying it again...I am very happy Kasper decided to GK wearing the Foxes badge, I for one would love him to see out his career here...but stories of the future wil be the descision maker on that.

Glad when he was sold, as Shilton was always far superior imo. Would put Banks behind Wallington, based on the games I saw Banks play over two or three seasons. Banks was prone to really horrendous errors. Kasper is is certainly better.
Thracian Posted 21 March 2017 Posted 21 March 2017 Could anyone have deserved it more? I'm thrilled for the bloke and for all the recognition - and prizes - he's got keeping goal for such a supposedly unfashionable club. I really hope we can keep the bloke. He's not just a good 'keeper but captaincy material and the sort of bloke who demands the most out of everyone.

Remember him getting sent off for returning the ball to the centre circle after conceding though. And despite that Jon Moss somehow became a top flight referee...
