Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone set to be shunted out in reshuffle should David De Gea leave

  • Manchester United's Sam Johnstone spent half a season on loan at Aston Villa
  • United are understood to be looking for £5million for the 24-year-old keeper
  • Johnstone representatives are thought to be in talks with Leicester and Watford
  • Real Madrid are set to make a concerted effort to sign United's David De Gea
  • Sam Johnstone is expected to fall victim of Manchester United's goalkeeping re-shuffle should David de Gea leave this summer.

Real Madrid are poised to make a concerted effort to sign de Gea and United are lining up replacements.

The arrival of another big name will merely serve to push 24-year-old Johnstone down the pecking order behind Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira, who was singled out for special praise from Jose Mourinho recently.

Both hope to stay and maintain their places as number two and three respectively.

Johnstone earned rave reviews during his half season on loan at Aston Villa and although they would like to take him permanently it appears they will face stiff competition for his services with his representatives already believed to be in negotiations with more than seven clubs including Leicester, Watford and Sunderland.

Bristol City had a £3million bid for Johnstone rejected a year ago and United are understood to be looking for up to £5m for a player who has two years left on contract.

Johnstone has had nine separate loan spells during his United career - at Scunthorpe, Walsall, Yeovil, Doncaster (twice), Preston (twice) and Villa.

When I saw the thread title, I thought Top & Vichai were buying a Scottish club to add to their portfolio.

How would signing a new keeper push him further down the pecking order if De Gea goes? A new keeper comes in so he would be going from 4th choice to 4 choice anyway surely. Is it me or is journalism going downhill?

My Aston Villa supporting friend didn't really rate him when he was there. A few too many mistakes apparently.

Interesting.

My Villa supporting mate loved him.

Even went as far as saying he was better than legends such as Gabor Kiraly and the Guze.

My Aston Villa supporting friend has his head up his arse as well.

Still thinks Gaby should be playing for England.

Was going to say. Rave reviews is made up because Villa fans didn't like at all. Likes a gaff.

Sign him up! Perfect replacement for Zieler based on that assessment. Like for like

Hate to be seen as not hating Zieler , but we really are spoilt with Schmeichel as our first choice. Just about anyone who comes in as backup for him will look pony by comparison, otherwise they'd be a number one elsewhere.
