It does say a lot about him and/or the player/person he has become - for whatever reason. He wanted to make a statement, make the headlines about him, be the subject of the story. Maybe it's understandable, maybe it's not but I feel he arguably put himself ahead of the team  - but then maybe he's earned the right to do that.

I dunno, people have been throwing the word "ever" around (not you necessarily BTW zeguy, I don't keep score) - I can't be that objective. I know he's certainly been, in his way, amongst the most talented players with the ball at his feet that I've seen (in any team) but whether that amounts to our best player 'ever' , I simply can't say. My own opinion is, without disrespect to his immense and undeniable talent, is not. For me, he never has been nor ever is likely to be a 'complete' enough player - whatever that means. Huge, huge contributions for sure, and ones that we've all been thrilled by and benefited from, but I've too often felt it's a talent he too has relied upon, as if he feels that's all he needs to do.

I really do wish him all the best (as it does seem taken for granted that he's off) and I really do hope he gets the move of his dreams, but I do honestly believe he's going to have to work to make a success of such a move. His talent alone will not be enough.

You make fair points and agree with you entirely. Still, for all his flaws I just can't help but love the guy. He's been a joy to watch and been pleased to see him score and assist for his (likely) last game.

We'll miss him.

He'll never leave. He'll spend the summer in an airport lounge. We'll procrastinate again. He'll have a mardy strop. Then he'll come round again when we give him a bumper contract with a nice pay rise. Business as usual.

We can’t afford to allow that to happen anymore I’m afraid

Still 2 years left on his contract.

but you lose all negotiating power in his final year

Which is why you give him a new contract with a nice pay rise and an obscene buy-out clause.

its not that simple if he really wants out he won't sign it, especially not with an "obscene" buy-out clause, Sunday rags were saying Man City have basically got him for £65m, its for the best that we just let him go and reinvest

This is a slim but real possibility, except he'll come round two weeks after the window closes and he's still here.

He won't sign a new contract no matter how much money we throw at him. He knows he can run down the contract a further year or two if needs be.

I cannot believe there are people in this thread who actually can't wait to "get rid" of Riyad Mahrez? Really?

If I had any spare cash, I would put on it that they were the same lot who cried when Sven sold Fryatt because he was a trier.

I will spending most of this summer praying that he does stay, like I have been for the last two summers.

if he wants to go let him as long as the right offer comes in, its pointless keeping a player that doesn't want to be here...

if by some miracle he wants to stay then happy days.. highly unlikely but you never know..

why everyone is enjoying the world cup i'm sure Riyad will be planning his next move... unfortunately for us.

Class act, best technical player to ever play for us (probably best midfielder)

@FIF can bang on about his half-arsed effort all he wants. Fact is you can't accrue points without goals and assists. We'll really struggle to replace what he gives us. If he runs down his contract, so be it. He's worth more to us than money in the bank.

we really struggle when he's on the pitch playing like he can't be arsed, sorry you cannot excuse that, he is so important to the team that when he can't be arsed he completely shuts us down

I don’t believe for one second that it’s based on his ability of even performances. When a player wants out and makes it as public as he has it’s always gonna be a struggle

That's definitely it now, as much as I would love a twist to the plot.

Just a matter of waiting to see where he will go.

Thanks for the memories Riyad. Look forward to seeing what happens next, and whether you ever do manage to time your jump right when trying to win a ball in the air... (surely I am not the only one who has noticed this about him?!)
