Whatever is left is needed to buy a backup LB and striker (£10-15m each). Rodgers hinted he might try to beg Fuchs to stay, I doubt it will happen but would solve the problem temporarily. With regards striker it may be that Rodgers feels he can get something from Nacho, or maybe offload Nacho at a cut price £15m and get someone in at a similar price.

So it’s preferable, and probably doable, to keep both... but if the finances are not workable then Harry can go with our best wishes.

Imagine if Chilwell got a long term injury early in the season.

Don't fancy the idea of Fuchs playing more than a couple of games, love him but I think he's now past his best.

There seems to be a general feeling that we have 2 replacements lined up and we'll be fine ...   Soyuncu has shown promise, Evans might get a knock at any time and isn't getting younger, Wes already has one hoof in the pasture field ...  and Benkovic is playing in a northern B league (I watched him once and he looked bang average) ...   so lets not think we are rich in CB talent just yet ....   all of these are good and as a group look strong, but no one is standing out on their own merits ...   Harry is the current England CB and can still improve.   He is easily the best CB we have.

It’s still a risk, I admit I forgot how young Evans is, feels like he has been round for ages so I assume he’s 35.

I still think 2 untried CBs, Wes (who I love, but is on the decline) and Evans leaves us short. Selling Maguire to fund Youri would also mean needing to buy a replacement for Maguire. We would need to buy someone with PL experience, eg Alfie Mawson from Fulham, that’ll be a big chunk of any Maguire money. We should be flogging reserve players before first teamers. If we are buying Youri we will also be looking at reducing further our midfield options. We need to decide on King, James and maybe even Mendy. Mendy probably has the highest value and we have Hamza as a ready made replacement.

We also need to consider what happens if we buy Youri have a really well balanced team then he gets injured who do we have that can play his role?

Maguire for Youri is such a simplified question it is largely redundant.

We’ve got way too many CBs as it stands. At the moment we’ve got 5 players for 2 CB spots (we wouldn’t sell Maguire if we’re thinking of going to a formation with 3 CBs). We don’t need to buy players with PL experience, plus the only ones good enough to start for us won’t be for sale. Our three best players this season - Maddison, Ricardo, Tielemans had no prior PL experience. Nacho had plenty of PL experience when he joined us, it’s not a guarantee by any means. And if we’re buying CBs for the bench we might as well go with the two £20m CBs we’ve already bought. Mawson has been injured all season.

Regards injuries, we’d probably fall apart if any one of about six players got injured, not just Youri.

The thing with selling reserve players rather than first teamers is that you’d have to sell a lot to even get close to the amount from one first teamer - and then you’d need to buy new cover for the bench anyway. Selling King, James and Mendy would probably bring in less than £15m combined and completely decimate our CM cover.

Any one of our players could get long term injuries at any point.

Of course he’s not that good any more, but Fuchs for Chilwell is still far more palatable than Nacho for Vardy or Amartey for Ricardo. More to the point we wouldn’t have to pay a chunky transfer fee for a slightly better LB to sit on the bench instead, in the same window we’re trying to scrape pennies together for Youri.

We’re not Man City, we can’t spend first teamer level money to keep subs of equal quality as our starters on the bench in case of injury.

No unless he wants to go.

Tielemans is brilliant and I want him in our club.  But many of us demand loyalty from our players and give them hell when they don't display it (Mahrez).  So unless we're fully embracing double standards we shouldn't be selling a decent player who wants to stay.

I for one am perfectly happy to embrace double standards and am going with **** yes.

Just as relevant is to ask, if Maguire to Man Utd is a done deal (as suggested elsewhere), is it absolutely imperative that we sign Tielemans?

And I'd say yes, absolutely. The pressure to have a roving CB would be relieved by the midfield working far more effectively.

As long as it’s a strictly hypothetical question, yes, Tielemans is more important than Harry for next season. But unless he’s desperate to leave I can’t imagine why we’d be keen to get rid of him? He’s a good, young, forward-thinking, English centre-half.

Keep if at all possible, or we’ll be watching footage of him in the CL in years to come and wondering why we let him go...

You can’t start a season with only 4 CBs when 2 have no experience and one is in decline. Especially if Rodgers wants to be able to use 3 at the back in some games.

You don’t always need to buy players with PL experience, but when the issue is lack of experience in the back line you can’t rely only on Morgan and Evans while Benkovic, Soyuncu and/or another get up to speed.

Ricardo has been great but took a while to get up to speed as Puel didn’t always trust him at RB and preferred Amartey at the start of the season. Maddison has also had a good season but not without dips in form and poor games. Tielemans is obviously a class player, but they are expensive and that is still no guarantee of success in the premier league. We thought we were buying a class player in Silva but it just didn’t work out.

Soyuncu needs games, best option is to loan him out for the first half of the season. We are all hoping Benkovic is going to be class but there is no guarantee he’ll succeed. Morgan needs replacing if not this summer than next, he can’t go on forever. You need minimum 4 CBs in the squad if we sell Maguire then that means there are question marks over 3 out the 4 which is not a good place to be. The point about Mawson is he’s a player we’ve looked at before and the type of player that fits our needs, he cost Fulham £20m.

Re: midfield reserves I’m not saying sell King, James, Mendy and Silva, but we need to move on at least 2 out of the 4 before bringing in Tielemans. We don’t want the same situation as last season where we have 2 professionals picking up their wages and not in the 25 man squad.

Then we need to look at those gaps in the squad and how to fill it.

Selling Maguire to fund Youri doesn’t make sense if you’re going to end up with an imbalanced squad. Hopefully we sign Youri for Silva + cash which won’t need funding by any other sales. We can hopefully offload some fringe players and keep Maguire and look to strengthen our striking options.

Mahrez acted like a 12-year-old when things didn't go his way

If Man U want to buy England’s staring CB who’s 26 and under contract for another four years, I very much doubt if it won’t be VVD amounts of money involved.

No we need to make a statement to the big boys that we aren't a selling club. Southampton did the sell to 'buy' approach. Look where that got them.

Maguire is pivotal to our defence. We need him. Likewise we need someone like Your, but if we're ever going to break into champions League territory, we need to keep and build. Not sell to buy.

I don't think he is pivotal at all.

The reason why some people gave Mahrez hell is because of the way he went about it. I dont think people would hate Maguire too much for leaving in the summer.

Fair enough, that is your opinion.

But I think that he is a very underated player, there is a reason he has been chosen for England and although I admit he has been a bit out of form. I'll remind you that this time last year we were all raving about how brilliant he is.

Morgan and Evans won't be around much longer, Benkovic is still unproven in this league (despite a bright start in Scotland), Soyuncu hasn't been particularly impressive in his cameo appearances and that is our CB options dried up. We need Maguire.

Dier gets chosen for England too.

I rest my case.

I don't see the link between the two, especially as it's not a like for like position wise.

Nobody......it's a hypothetical question.
