David Guiza Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 There may be already be a topic on here somewhere about this, apologies if so, but I've just purchased a magazine for the first time in ages and wondered if anybody on here subscribes to/regularly purchases any, or newspapers for that matter. I think what puts me off is 1. The price, you're generally looking at £4+ for anything more interesting than a glossy gossip mag or child's magazine and you can buy a good book for the same price in a supermarket. 2. Majority of content in a magazine, or newspaper especially, can easily be found online which sort of ruins them. I went through a stage of buying the New Statesmen for a few weeks running and used to get NME quite a bit when I was a teenager, but that's about it since I was a kid. Anybody got any they'd particularly recommend? That's right folks, it's another boring thread to pass the time before the new season starts/transfer business starts happening.
bovril Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 I used to get the NME every week and cringe now when I think of the stuff that used to be in it. Always buy the dreaded Guardian on Saturdays because I like the review and sport sections, and the international coverage is good. Sometimes buy Esquire, some of the writing is very good. Quite enjoy WSC from time to time.
SemperEadem Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 Used to make a point of buying the Mercury when I lived in Leicestershire then it's links to The Mail put me off. I have a subscription to Weekends Football magazine and if I do buy a paper it would be The Observer on a Sunday
Guest Kopfkino Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 I subscribe to Readly which is £7.99 a month and has a few titles I read, obviously digital not physical. Often look at GQ, Spectator, New Statesman, Time, The Atlantic and any of the food ones plus if I see anything of interest in the catalogue. They used to have Country Life and the BBC magazines but they've gone now. As for papers The Times and FT

The letters pages with people getting their knickers in a twist because the lead singer of the Strokes had a haircut was always a highlight in that respect. If we ever go for a quick breakfast at Sainsburys or wherever on a weekend then I'll usually pick up whatever newspaper is around and find myself enjoying the Telegraph which subsequently made me feel a little dirty. There's something quite enjoyable about a weekend newspaper.

I get Mens Fitness delivered in the post but don't spend the money monthly - If you subscribe for 12 issues with a one off payment it works out at sub £3 per issue.
RoboFox Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 I found a jazz mag hidden in a tree stump off a lay-by on the A5199 once. Was it stashed by a trucker who regularly uses the spot and wanted to return to it without transporting it in their cab? Maybe there was a policy of leaving them for other truckers to enjoy? Doggers? Mischievous adolescents...? So yeah, I sometimes buy the Guardian and Private Eye.

They were owned by the same company, but that would never have influenced editorial decisions. Now owned by a different company anyway.

They were both owned by DMGT, who had their fingers in all sorts of pies and different divisons. It's a very tenuous link really. You'd no more be funding the Mail then than you'd be funding the Daily Express by buying the Merc (both owned by the same company now) these days.
Samilktray Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 I went to buy a magazine last week and it was £6 with no free gift. Absolutely disgusting world we’re living in
stripeyfox Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 I've not brought a newspaper in years. My next door neighbour donated his used papers for me to use when we were whelping the puppies[for the pups to pee on]. Telegraph mainly. Found myself reading some of it but only really the travel sections and some of the other lifestyle stuff, rather than actual news.
Alf Bentley Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 Have subscribed to Private Eye for years. Excellent value - a lot of quality content for a low price. Lots of amusing exposes/cartoons/satire/pastiche plus wide-ranging coverage of the (often corrupt or hypocritical) actions of national, local & international politicians, businesspeople, officials, journalists, celebrities etc. Material of a kind and quality that you don't really get elsewhere. They clearly have a lot of good sources/whistleblowers and good researchers. Some in-depth investigations, too. Subscribed to New Statesman this year for first time on a deal (£2 per issue for a year). I think it's varied wildly in quality over the years - from good to 3rd rate and back. It's in a good phase now re. the quality of some of the articles/analysis, but could do with being more wide-ranging & doing more research. Can't be arsed with all the literary/culture coverage. Used to get Uncut, but cancelled as I ended up never reading it and with piles of free CDs sitting around unlistened to - though the CDs were often good, when I did listen to them. Got NME regularly in my youth (late 70s to mid-80s) when it was a crucial, top quality music publication. Sad to see what became of it. Newspapers: Only get The Guardian on a Saturday now, largely out of habit & wondering whether to stop. I like a relaxed hour or two reading the main columnists, Family & Sports section, but it's not great value now (£3-odd?), especially when all the columns are free online. Get my news online or from TV. The Guardian often makes assumptions about its readers' opinions in its news (liberal bias), which is why I switched to the Independent when that first emerged & still offered neutral, high-quality reporting.
Fox92 Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 Sometimes I see a magazine I fancy buying and it's something like £3+. No chance I'm paying that for a magazine. I get Private Eye now and then. Good price and it's a good / funny read. I used to get NME every week but I stopped buying that years ago. Don't even look at their website or social media nowadays, it's shite.

I've often thought about getting a copy of Private Eye but never got around to it. I think a nonsensical childhood dislike of Ian Hislop from when my Dad used to watch HIGNFY put me off! I'll give that a go sometime soon. I get what you're saying about the New Statesman, some issues I've loved virtually every page and then others I've had to skip through 15 pages about private schools, for example. If I were to have a regular subscription that would be it. I follow Mundial Mag on Twitter who seem to have produce a decent mag, but I've never actually read it. Has anybody else? I still follow NME on Instagram and Twitter, no idea why, and it's amazing how much it's changed. Most pictures and articles are on Taylor Swift and co which just seems alien to what it used to be.

Yeah bought it a few times. It's decent and is better than say 442 (although maybe that comparison is weak) however I think the price for it is way too much.
Guest MattP Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 Subscribe to The Times which is good value given its a £1 a day (1.80 in shop) and I get the digital version of it on Saturday and Sunday for free. Buy the Mail on Sunday as well every week. Magazines I don't subscribe to any of them anymore but if I'm taking a train, flight etc I'll buy Private Eye, the Spectator, Boxing News and Viz if I'm in the mood. Occasionally buy All Out Cricket. The eye is tremendous value for money although the reporting can sometimes be a tad sloppy, although rare.

The Blur Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 I subscribe to Four Four Two and have always found their articles a good read as they usually offer personalised insight into football rather than standard who Man Utd should buy this summer junk. They also got some cracking features going on such as one on one (usually with eccentric or cult footballers), celebrity fan feature which is far better than it sounds and more.
SystonFox Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 I used to subscribe to cycling plus. used to buy nuts or zoo in my late teens early twenties. Lucy pinder and Michelle marsh were legit quality
Brizzle Fox Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 Subscribe to Private Eye and Esquire and have done for years. To lazy to cancel tbh.
oakman Posted 5 June 2019 Posted 5 June 2019 Get a subscription for National Geographic as one of my Christmas presents every year.

Rocket-Ron Posted 6 June 2019 Posted 6 June 2019 National geographic and Electronic sounds magazine. Both very interesting publications.
