Hi everyone, Reading FC fan here - hope you are all doing OK.  I picked up this photo in a junk shop recently.  It is a VERY long shot, but I wondered if it might be a Foxes player?  The photo studio printed at the bottom is Aaron Pickering, of 43 Granby Street, Leicester.  (Actually, it was 'forty three and a half' Granby Street, but I didn't know how to do the half on my keyboard).  Does anyone know if the jersey he is wearing might have been the Foxes official strip at the time?  I would guess the photo was taken in the early part of the 1900s.  Best of luck for whatever remains of this season, and next of course.

Doesn't look like a Fosse shirt that I've ever seen. Might be worth dropping a line to our club historian, John Hutchinson. He'll most likely be able to help.

William Thomas Wilson

Fosse August 01 - Nov 03

A notably tall reserve goal keeper made 5 FL 2 appearance.

Circumstantial evidence suggests he died in  Poor Law Institution January 1929 from the effects of being scalder by hot milk.

They look like a happy bunch

Maybe had to stay still with fixed expressions due to long camera exposure times in those days? :dunno:

Hard to maintain a fixed grin for however many minutes without looking a bit crazy? Old photos of ancestors from 100+ years ago usually have them looking very solemn.

Hopefully you're right and they are much happier than they look!

Interesting article here about it, difference in attitudes, availability and reasons for the photograph.

Yeah, in 10 years time kids will be going, "Mum, why are you smiling in that photo, why aren't you pouting?"

I hate the pout, a smile (or stern look lol) is so much nicer.

Wonder if he's got any surviving descendants?

Interesting photo - as a back-up goalie you wonder why he's pictured in the (rather attractive) outfield strip of the time.

The club probably kept hold of the strip, washed it & distributed them for matches, so maybe it was a photographer's prop for any Fosse players who came into the studio?

Quite a modern-looking bloke compared to many of his contemporaries, though a sad end if true.

Interesting to speculate though. Thanks to the Reading fan who posted it.

Thanks so much DavieG - great detective work.  I'm pretty sure it is young Mr Wilson.  Shame he came to such a sad end.

Eaststander

No problem, enjoyed doing it although our Of foxes & Fossils book from which I got the info is big ad heavy and especially trying to scan sections of pages.

Re the photo would you bw interested in letting our Club Historian have it He's gathering up quite a lot of historical stuff hopefully for a museum in our expanded stadium project.
