Hooliganism certainly played it’s part in lower attendances, but you also have to take into account the economic hardship of the seventies and eighties ( 3m unemployed at one point) and the fact that the ‘modern’ man chose to pursue other options on a Saturday afternoon such as shopping

I was at the game where Hazell was sent off. I can't remember if it was for us, or against us. However, I do remember the Kop singing "Brown man in the bath" to the tune of Boney M's "Brown girl in the ring", and Bob turning round and applauding and smiling. Not especially PC, I guess, but a comical moment which he seemed to appreciate nevertheless.

Hi, Just in case anyone is still interested in a question I raised a few months ago, i have finally found the answer myself.

Bob Hazell WAS sent off in the 72nd minute in the Leicester City v Norwich City match on 17 November 1984.

I have attached a match report from a Sunday newspaper with the information.

I was at that game too, against QPR, without checking i think it was around christmas time, and yes the kop did indeed sing that, i remember it well.

I know Bob well, he’s a great bloke, and we have had some good times out. 
The best being when he rang me once saying that QPR had invited him down for the Leicester game as special guest and he can take someone with him. He knew I would love it and so he asked me to go with him.

I was flattered and had a great day. Martin ONeill was at the game so he took me over to meet him, Andy Impey too.

One of those days I couldn’t believe what was happening, I was Bobs guest and I was shocked he asked me to go. 
Afterwards he insisted on walking me to the tube station to make sure I got back okay, he genuinely is a really thoughtful guy.

We meet up every so often, we tend to go to Nando’s in Coventry as it’s half way for both of us, even though Bob don’t like chicken, which we laugh about.

A lovely fella, a lovely family, I still look back and can’t believe he invited me. But then again I can, as Bob is the sort of person that would do something for someone knowing it would be special for them.

A lot of it was down to the threat of hooliganism hanging over the game at the time : and then a season later the further reduced top flight attendances across the board were down to the universal fear/disgust stay away factor re Heysel disaster in May 1985 re Juventus v Liverpool European Cup final - the then Champions League Final to our younger readers! It seems rather unimaginable that happening now really in such a prestigious competition!

Yes that was the game, of course when he played for us his song from our fans was "who throws petrol bombs Bob Hazell Bob Hazell"
