Life on furlough, not quite as we know it

Recommended Posts

I have to say life today, in lockdown is a lot more chilled than normal life. I can only imagine this is what life on a desert island with a full fridge feels like. As a regular pub goer, I haven;t missed the pub. Maybe its been too much of the same old or maybe its saving around £50 a week I'm enjoying? Then there are the Saturdays, or Sundays, or Monday evenings - I still think of them as Saturdays. The rollercoaster ride of getting stuffed by Southampton one week and then stuffed by Burnley the next. The constant talk of all the best players moving on to somewhere lots better, which the media seem to present as just about anywhere. I actually haven't missed it.

I'm sure when the first games come back I'll be shouting a yelling like I normally do, kicking every ball and opposition player on the way. Blood pressure up. Anxiety up. Frustration through the roof.

I'm not desperate for football to come back in the proposed form but hoping I'll get the buzz back once Leicester are back.

Think I've realised that unless I'm watching a random match in person or fans are in the stadium or I have an affiliation/support a team then I dont really care unfortunately.

For example, found it hard to get into the other leagues like Bundesliga since their return behind closed doors, less so than I'd normally be into Bundesliga during a regular season. Only match I was interested in was Dortmund v Bayern even though Dortmund are entertaining generally.

Really hope after all of this that football clubs realise how important the match attending fans are rather than it just being a soundbite.

It's a strange feeling because during the normal summer months and leading up to pre-season I can't wait for the friendlies and to get back etc. But I haven't had that feeling. A lot of football fans I know have had the same "not missed it" feeling. I don't watch European football so wasn't bothered about Germany starting back up.

Luckily my working week hasn't changed at all but weekends, when I'm usually at a game, I just have that time to get other stuff done. I've missed going out with mates more.

I've missed the Pub and the football. Not so much for the beer. Actually drinking less with no social side to drinking. Be interesting to see if that changes tonight now a few of us can get in a garden and social distance beer, and if I keep away from the pub apart from football once they are reopen.

Been cycling a lot more under lockdown. Done around 500 miles in 2 months. I think I'd managed about 200 in the previous 2 years lol

Also despite 3 weeks off work with no income we've managed to put away about 800 quid in the 2 months.

Shows how much money i spend in pubs and on football. Plus how quickly the kids activities soon mount up with 20 quid here and 30 quid there in DD for football, gymnastics, cubs, guides, gymnastics etc.

Think mentally the football coming back will be a short term improvement in my day to day life. However I bet I get bored of empty stadiums and resort to only watching us with a week or so.

Maybe the tv can go in the garden so at least I can sit and watch with mates or neighbours.

really can't say that I'm looking forward to the sterile fan-less version of football that will be served up to suit the money gods. I'd prefer the season remainder to be written off with a points per game applied for the remainder of fixtures.

Don't really frequent pubs that much but do miss having a few drinks around the BBQ with friends etc. Strangely enough though my consumption has more than doubled due to working from home rather than being away all week at work, where i cannot really have more than a single drink of an evening (and not often even that) due to the industry i work in and random testing etc.

As far as the footy is concerned i cannot wait to see city back in action again, although with some trepidation as we have everything to gain or lose(CL qualification). It will be interesting to see which clubs cope best with the new rules and closed doors games. It will be strange because it will be like starting a new season really, nobody will have momentum. Some teams, and i am thinking Spurs here as a prime example, will be much better off as a result of the lockdown as their horrendous injury list should have cleared up, whereas before they were struggling with no recognised fit striker. Mental strength will be a huge factor, particularly for those teams down at the wrong end of the table, with those currently in the bottom three seeing it as a possible, if temporary, reprieve, and others, possibly thinking they were safe, now having to go again to stay up, compared to ending the season as was.

Wherever teams are, with 9 games, hitting the ground running and getting a couple of wins under the belt will be crucial. Fortunately for us, our trickiest games (on paper anyway) are towards the end and hopefully we will have cemented our top four place by then.

I am a bit gutted as just before lockdown i had taken out cheap "introductory" trial offers for both sky and BT which have now expired, but would have just about seen the season out, so if i want to watch the games legit, then i will have to fork out for a full subscription now.

Life in llockdown has been mixed for me, work from home anyway, although it's been a lot quieter. Only really go out socialising with friends and family when back in Leicester, so I'm used to only seeing them every few months. Haven't seen anyone since December, which is hard.

I'm definately missing the footie as it consumes a large proportion of my weekend. BT have found a way to block EE customers 'mirroring' to the TV so might have to fork out for the casting add-on. Awiaing the tv schedule, if we're only on for the FA Cup game I'll wait.

My biggest impact, we were supposed to have the house on the market in March with the hope of moving this summer, that's in complete limbo. Estate Agents in Northern Ireland can't work yet and we're not able to travel to Leicester to house hunt anyway.

At least the weather has been uncharacteristically decent.

Not been too bad here.  They've had me doing the customer service (calls) for our long term clients from home, which hasn't been too bad - a couple of calls needed to our plumber and electrician, only - (along with explaining to someone how to replace a light bulb!).

They've mainly been calling me just to chat, TBH :P

So I've had loads of time not doing much but playing compooter games, and getting paid for it :P;):D (I really need to get back to Elite Dangerous...)

I know it's a bit of a pain but you could hook your phone to your laptop and your laptop to the TV via an HDMI cable.

Or if you can access BT sport on a laptop then just skip the first point above.

As an unsociable bleeder at the best of times can't really say lockdown's made much difference to me one way or the other.

In fact if anything it seems to make the world (or at least the part of it visible to me) a marginally kinder,  more chilled and better mannered place than usual.

There again i don't have to share my space with someone who basically pisses me off more unbearably with every passing day. Guess I'm just not the family-minded type. My ex-wife, indeed wives, would no doubt agree. ..

Won't be sorry though to see the end of "celebrity" responses to the pandemic which highlight the lower the level of inner resource, the more marked the need to fill their new-found leisure with whatever clichéd activity (garden marathons, baking bleeding cakes) happens to be in vogue at the moment.

Don't mind them doing it so much if they didn't feel the need to record and share every tedious predictable moment of it.

Can't access it on any device which doesn't contain my EE sim, you previously could just use your account on any device but that 'work around' went a while ago. I'll test the phone to lap top connect next BT game. Or cough up the £10. The other half just wants to upgrade the Sky package but I'm tight lol
