Recall seeing him playing George Orwell in a TV thing, about the later part of his life, writing 1984 on a Scottish Island. Pretty good, from memory. 

Also think he was Chamberlain in that Gary Oldman film about Churchill.

My first ever job was at Kwik Save in Oadby, but I also covered shifts at Enderby and Wigston.

 

£2.16 and hour 

 

In relation to todays minimum wage, that actually wasn't bad.

 

We sometimes worked on a Sunday, even though the store was closed.

 

The boss turned up, let us in, then locked us in and came back 6 hours later 

 

Pump truck races were all the rage. Especially when you chucked a load of sunflower oil at the end of one of the aisles!

 

They were too tight to pay for CCTV in those days.

Presumably I did 40 hours a week so that works out to £1.87 per hour.

Never thought of my wage 'per hour' at the time, just loved doing the job.

And living at home, and too young to drive at that point, I thought I was loaded

Quid a pint and about £1.50 for 20 fags in those days.

 

Living the dream.

 

And the petrol station only needed space for 2 numbers for the price of fuel!

I was checking it out. He took a break in 2003 from West Ham, then came back later in the year before leaving again. He then had 3 years out before his stint at Newcastle and didn't manage after that. Horrible that it's come back 17 years later, for some they just never beat these things.

In 71 I had a Saturday job at Woolies. £1/10 (£1.50) for the day. 

Beer was about 10 a pint. Still shit money though.

Was the beer 10/- (10 shillings) or 10d (10 old pence) per pint?

 

10 shillings (50p) would've been a third of your income, but you could have had a skinful if they were charging 10d (about 4p) per pint. 

 

I was only aged 8-9 in 1971, so wasn't buying pints yet. But I do remember being outraged when the sweet shop raised the price of fruit salad chews from 8 for a penny to only 4 for a penny c.1970.

Cheapest I remember paying for a pint was 35p in a student union bar in 1980.
