No, that only kicks in if the winner of the champions league or europa league finishes outside the top 4.

United are guaranteed top 4 so them winning EL is irrelevant. This whole scenario was based on if Arsenal won EL and Chelsea won the CL and both finished outside the top 4 then 4th would miss out.

A maximum of five Premier League teams are eligible for UEFA Champions League qualification.

They give examples of teams winning if they do not finish top 4 or 5... but not if they do, which is far more likely!

What circumstance does 5th become a UCL spot?

If Chelsea win the champions league and finish 5th. That’s the only permutation that allows this to happen this season.

I can’t believe so many of our so called fans don’t understand how the CL qualification rules work. It’s so straight forward; maybe we have an extra thick fan base. It’s like queries on co-efficient, all easy to understand, but still people post questions.

Essentially, 5th never becomes a CL spot.

The team that finishes in 5th can get in to the CL by other means (EL/CL winners), but you cant get into the CL by virtue of finishing 5th. The only change that can happen to the league qualification is that 4th misses out if (and only if) both CL/EL winners are PL sides who finished outside of the CL placings. In that case, they take priority and as we can only have 5 English sides in the CL, 4th would drop down to EL.

I do wonder how many of the queries are sincere ones .......

But then again, European qualification is a new thing for our fanbase so perhaps ignorance isn’t that much of a surprise

The co-efficient is a points based system which reflects your performance in European competition. The more points you have the better seeded you are when the draw is made for the group stage.

I believe there should be a parliamentary petition to have the government sanction eufa or clubs benefiting from access not based on the previous stand performance or receiving money nit available to all cl participants.

The coefiicient system gives access to the cl for clubs who fail to qualify ... and it gives extra money to just those clubs... ie if Leicester are in the cl then say man city would get more prize money for the same performance

If a English team win either of the Champions League or Europa League and finish in the top 4, does this mean 5th then becomes a Champions League spot?

No expert required, just reading your sources helps :D

lol Same, I was asked on Facebook, and I genuinely didn't know... So I thought I'd ask on here as someone would know!

I remember Liverpool finished 5th but won the UCL and they had to make space for them as champions 1 year... I am just practising my straw clutching, FYI I am getting better :P

Yeah I remember that, a Welsh team offered to play them in a play off match I think. I think that was what prompted the rule change actually.

Maybe we could ask the welsh champions for the same deal for next season :ph34r:lol

What happens if Chelsea finish 5th and the win the Champions League? Assuming they still qualify as winners but do we lose a spot?
