Not an ideal result but we learn far more from games/results like this than we do from meaningless U23 games...... or playing over age players to artificially protect our results.

Personally, i would rather see our young players be properly tested so we can see who has what it takes when the s*** is flying rather than hear about how great our U23s are when half of them are over-age.

I have no problem with our development teams getting beaten so long as they are instructed to play in the same style as the first team and it helps us identify potential players of the future.....and we can quickly offload the ones that will never get anywhere near our first team.

I'd say it probably helps for the younger lads to play with a couple of experienced players. So 16-19 year olds playing with 2 or 3 more experienced heads. Getting that onfield coaching and playing against proper men is what will help develop a player.

Our problem is that previously we've played teams of players that are 20-24 who should be out playing regular first team football somewhere and it's benefitting nobody.

Agreed.

I'm at a loss though with the distinct lack of attackers that we have in the U18's and U23's. We've got 3 strikers in Kian Pennant, Will Russ and Jake Wakeling. I know we shouldn't sign players for the sake of it but for a long while now the academy seems to want to collect an abundance of goalkeepers and defenders that they don't pay anything for.

Wakeling has been injured now for a few weeks and rather promote Pennant to the U23's or play Will Russ, they are playing 5ft 4 Ethan Fitzhugh as a striker and its ridiculous. They've also moved Maswanhise out of his left wing role and he's not been as dangerous but still shown his versatility. Surely though it's opportunity to get experience to those at lower age groups and then the knock on effect works. Pennant up to the 23's whilst Wakeling is injured and then the U16 striker up to the U18's etc.

9 goals conceded and 1 scored so far in tournament. Grim stuff.

Liverpool's U21s have conceded 8 and scored 1 in their two games.

Leeds U21s got gubbed 4-1 at Tranmere.

Newcastle United's U21s have scored none and conceded five.

Palace U21s were beaten 3-0 at Sutton.

Southampton's U21s have lost both games.

etc etc

what's happened with Stolarczyk? went from undisputed first choice for the U23s to not making a single squad, is he injured?

Ali Reghba and Josh Eppiah are still there but not featuring too, have they all aged out?

Shame these games always come during the international break, it would be good to see Braybrooke in one of them

Stolarczyk played the other week for the U23's but it was his 1st appearance for a while and then hasn't been seen since.

He played against Brighton the other week when Young was out but I found it interesting he played ahead of Odunze who seems to be the number 2

Reghba has only been seen in an under 23 pre-season friendly but other than that he hasn’t played since being sent off against Chelsea in March and then being injured, Eppiah just hasn’t been seen at all - I imagine we have aged these 2 out if they can’t even get a game at striker ahead of short arse Fitzhugh

if they are aged out, it means they are ineligible for the first team too, we apparently couldn't get them a loan, so just release them

....just watching that we do not have a clue in defending crosses!!!

They are about as good as the first team, at least compete for the ball even if it is to give the attacker a little nudge in order to stop them timing their jumps.

Tavares not had a look in Porto B although he's only been there a little more than a month, I think. If he gets half the season in the Portugal's second division then I guess it will have been worthwhile.

is he on loan or did he leave us?

Those highlights....definitely had the look of "boys vs men", some of the Accrington plays looked huuuuge !

Was really impressed with Ben Nelson pre-season so would rather he had experience against professional footballers at that level than playing against his own age group and not realising the task ahead...

....he has definitely left us, and went to Porto on a "Free"!!!

Only time will tell if his move was the right one and I suspect that even if it does not work out he felt it was the right option at the time. I am not yet convinced of his talent and hope that he gets that bit of luck that you sometimes need to get where he wants to go.

Gone AWOL again, will never kick on and have a career the amount of times he just disappears for unknown reasons.
