The young players you have referenced could well turn out to be a similar standard as Pearson, Hopper etc by the time they are trying to push into the first team. People get far too carried away watching kids do well against kids their own age I think.

That said, fingers crossed they are all world class and are the new “class of 92”.

I can assure you, them three are different gravy!

Five Leicester City prospects who could save the club millions
City's academy has been in excellent form over recent years in producing players that can step into the first team, and there are plenty of other prospects who could break through soon

Leicester City’s academy is on a hot streak right now.

In the first-team squad, there are four homegrown players in Harvey Barnes, Hamza Choudhury, Luke Thomas, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. A little over 12 months ago, another academy graduate, Ben Chilwell, was sold for £50million.

In promoting those players into the first team, City have saved millions that they would otherwise have had to spend in the transfer market.

But who could be next to make the grade? Here are five players aged 18 or under who could break through into the first team in the coming years...

Tawanda Maswanhise

The breakout star of City’s pre-season, Tawanda Maswanhise is the club’s hottest prospect right now.

His displays for the Under-18s last season, where his pace and trickery on the wing saw him lead the side’s assist charts, earned him a spot on the bench at Manchester United at the end of last season, and then a role in the first team over the summer.

In the opening two friendlies, against Burton and Wycombe, he was arguably City’s best performer, thrilling with his fearless play on the ball.

Stepping up to the Under-23s, Maswanhise has been quick out of the blocks, much like his dad would have been as a sprinter for Zimbabwe at the Commonwealth Games in 1998 and 2002.

He has scored three goals in the six Premier League 2 fixtures, prompting high praise from coach Ben Petty.

“He has (got that quality), and you take it for granted now,” he said. “He looks a livewire. Once he gets his physicality, grows into his body, and believes in his ability a bit more, I think we’ve got a player on our hands.”

Ben Nelson

The other youngster to feature in pre-season was centre-back Ben Nelson, who has been showing his promise for a while.

Although he only turned 17 in March, he was a regular in the defence for City’s Under-23s last season, and was even included in the matchday squad for the Europa League trip to Zorya Luhansk.

In pre-season, he featured throughout, including in the win over Villarreal. He already has the stature to compete against more senior players, while he showed over the summer he can do the defensive basics too.

Injury has limited him so far this season, but the towering defender has time on his side.

Sammy Braybrooke

One of two City youngsters currently in the England Under-18s set-up, there are high hopes for central midfielder Sammy Braybrooke.

While he may be diminutive, it’s hard to miss the 17-year-old, given his energy in getting around the pitch and his composure on the ball. He has been a key player for City’s Under-23s so far this season in the way he has moved the ball forward from a deeper role in the centre of the park.

He has trained with the first team, so he is a player Rodgers has his eye on, while he’s started every game in the Premier League 2 so far this season.

Kian Pennant

The other City prospect to have caught the eye of the national selectors is striker Kian Pennant.

A nephew of former Liverpool winger Jermaine, and the younger brother of fellow City academy player Terell, Kian has been involved in the England youth set-up for a while and is progressing up the ranks nicely with City too.

He started scoring for the Under-18s while aged just 15, and he made his mark in the FA Youth Cup last season as City reached the last 16.

He has three goals in five outings for the club’s Under-18s this year, and if he keeps scoring, more opportunities at Under-23 level will come his way.

Will Alves

It only takes a few minutes to see why attacking midfielder Will Alves is one the most exciting prospect on City’s books.

A freestyle football champion as a kid, Alves’ dazzling footwork has caught the eye and has seen him quickly rise through the ranks with his hometown club.

He made his Under-23s debut earlier this season, aged just 16, while continues to show his talent at Under-18 level too, setting up all three goals in a recent Premier League Cup win over Newcastle.

He is not lacking in confidence either, and is already looking to the first team.

“Those games (with the Under-23s) really helped build my confidence,” he said last month.

“The main aim is to make my debut for Leicester City. Being in and around the first team would be amazing.

“But for now, my focus is on playing with the Under-23s as much as I can, and if I can get another international call-up this season, that would be brilliant too.”

Wonder who of the above 5 might make the cut here, hopefully all 5! Think Maswanhise if probably further along in his development due to being a bit older and could maybe do with a loan come January if he’s still performing well, looked good in pre-season. Maybe a 6 month loan in League one, and then a championship loan next year.

For the others they’re probably a year or 2 away from senior men’s football but would be good to see them go out on loan in the next couple of years now we seem to be promoting our better younger players sooner ie. All getting minutes in the U23’s when they are 17 or younger.

Ben Nelson if he stays injury free is the closest. Maswanhise is the sort who I think could make an impact right now but it might be a risk. Think all 5 to be fair have what it takes, Alves is just obscene.

I thought the agent was holding Bayli by the elbow at first. It fit given their expressions.

I think this needs a refresh and a rebrand.

I don’t get how this is productive for the club, most of the lads on this team won’t ever go on to play at a decent level, or at all. Focus on the 18’s and below and then have a development squad a bit like the old reserve leagues.

They need to find a happy medium again where young promising players can play with the fringe first team players. Players like Daka need game time to get their confidence going and match sharpness, and you can’t get that by having only cameo appearances.

They need to slightly tweak the rules so more fringe first team players can play, and with the chance of breaking into the first team they should be fairly competitive.

I never liked it when they scrapped the reserves, I just think this u23 development league is a bit of a farce, especially when you’re signing players just to play in the under 23’s…….

Be interesting to think what others think?

City’s Under-18s Taste Defeat On South Coast
ACADEMY

Southampton Under-18s claimed a 2-0 victory over Leicester City’s Under-18s at Snows Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Both sides were playing in their second U18 Premier League Cup fixture of the group stage, with Leicester defeating Newcastle United 3-0 seven days ago and the Saints losing out to Nottingham Forest last time out.

However, it would be the hosts who got off the mark in this season’s competition, moving level with the Foxes on three points in Group A, thanks to two goals during the opening 45 minutes in Totton.

Midfielder Fedel Ross-Lang converted a 20th-minute penalty to get Southampton up and running before Kamari Doyle assisted Dominic Ballard, who found the net on the stroke of half-time.

That’s how things stayed throughout the second half, despite City’s best efforts to get back into the game, and they must now regroup ahead of returning to Premier League U18 South duties on Saturday 23 October.

The young Foxes are set to face Arsenal Under-18s at LCFC Training Ground in Seagrave (11:30am BST kick-off).

City: Doherty; Grist (Read 65’), Godsmark-Ford, Wilson-Brown; Kutshienza, Cartwright, Cover (Lewis 72’), Lindsay; Alves (Javid 58’), Popov, Pennant.

Unused subs: Addai, Dawkins.

City’s Premier League 2 clash with Leicester Under-23s will be broadcast live on CITY+.

The game gets underway at 19:30 (UK) on Saturday 16 October at the Academy Stadium as Brian Barry-Murphy’s youngsters aim to pick up where we left off before the international break.

James McAtee’s early strike, his tenth of the season in just seven matches, earned City a hard-fought 1-0 win over Derby in our last encounter, preserving our unbeaten start to the new season as well as top spot in the process.

Victory over the Rams continued a dream start to our defence of an inaugural PL2 title.
