Leicester City Under 18s vs West Brom

image.png

Subs: Kutshienza, Weeks, Read, Lewis, Javid

*Would ignore where they have put players in the formation, never accurate

Some corking names in that lot, J.J.H Butterfill initialised like that sounds like either a fantasy author or old American oil magnate.

Seriously though, what the hell happened there???

I’m sure many of us have been involved with kids football where a lead of a couple of goals can evaporate in injury time.  The kids simply aren’t tactically aware enough.   But these guys are professionals and it’s simply unforgivable.

im pretty sure that this isn’t the first time that we’ve conceded a two goal lead late on at U23 recently

i’d be laying it on the line that if they want to be retained as pros then they need to sort their mentality out and fast ……

I don’t because you can’t ship out the first team squad members so easily …..

but the point about mentality is correct and makes you wonder about the club as a whole (currently)

3 games so far including today where we have dropped points due to conceding late goals

Man Utd - 2-0 up and conceded in the 83rd and 90th minute

Brighton - 1-1 and conceded with the last kick of the game to lose

Won with the last kick of the game last week and also late on got a point vs Chelsea. Seems we are shit or bust in the closing minutes!

The mentality of chasing a game is very different to looking after what you’ve got

I watched my youngest in an U11 game v Wolverhampton  last weekend and they came back threee times to lead 4-3 with two mins to go.  They couldn’t adjust their mindset and went looking for a fifth!  They lost 5-4!   Very frustrating for the watching parents but the kids learned a valuable lesson (a couple, of them even thought they’d drawn!)     to see young pros lose three in added time must drive the coaching staff nuts.

Think it was about 70th minute our goal against Chelsea wasn't it?

Don't think it helps we keep changing up the back line every game

Seemed to either be a back 5 - VDC, Ewing, Nelson, Brunt, McAteer

Or a back 4 - VDC, Ewing, Nelson, Brunt / VDC, Nelson, Brunt, McAteer

Either way each possible option has players in positions they don't actually play

I thought it was about 5-10 mins to go? I'm probably wrong.

Odd line up again today, no striker and Ewing is a central midfielder so not sure where he was playing, we've Flynn on the bench who is the only left sided defender / wing back but we keep playing McAteer there. Just play a back 4, I'd they switch to whatever formation the first team playe then they are only going to be going to a back 4 after the international break anyway 😂😂

Please can someone tell me where I can find tickets for under 23 home games?

None on sale at the moment

Next game they will be available for is Spurs on Monday 22nd November, and from what I remember for previous games they have been going on sale the Monday before (so would possibly be the 15th)

On the website you buy them in the same part you buy senior side home tickets

Seems like Hirst is not putting it all in during training.

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley makes George Hirst admission after latest snub for Leicester loanee
Danny Cowley has challenged struggling George Hirst to ‘earn the right to play’.

By Neil Allen
Sunday, 7th November 2021, 4:55 am

The Leicester City loanee was surprisingly overlooked for Saturday’s FA Cup encounter with Harrow Borough.

Cowley opted against freshening up his goal-shy for the visit of the Southern League Premier South outfit.

Instead John Marquis, with four goals in 17 appearances this term, continued to be preferred to Hirst in attack.

The 22-year-old wasn’t even called upon from the bench in the 1-0 victory, despite Cowley making four substitutions and having another slot remaining.

It represents another blow to Hirst, who has so far failed to prove his worth in a disappointing loan spell since arriving from the Premier League.
Cowley told The News: ‘Against Harrow, I played the players that earn the right to play. George ‘ain’t done it.

‘George will get another opportunity (against Crystal Palace) and this is what they've all got to do.

‘They had an opportunity against Sutton and didn’t take it, did they. If they want to then they’ve got to take their chance.

‘We’re not messing around are we, this is professional sport, you have to earn the right. The players have to earn the right.

‘Absolutely you can do that in training. We plan training to the finest detail and we watch it back every single day.

‘They all get a mark out of 10 every session, they know exactly what they have done, what they haven’t done. They know exactly where they are and we pick what we see.

‘I don’t pick the team, the players pick the team. I just name them.’

The former Sheffield Wednesday forward has made 13 appearances since arriving from the Foxes, albeit most fleeting cameos from the bench.

His goal return aside, Hirst’s overall performances have also largely also failed to convince the Fratton faithful.

The striker’s two starts have both come in Papa John’s Trophy defeats to AFC Wimbledon and Sutton United.

Meanwhile, all 11 of his League One outings have come as a substitute, despite Marquis’ ongoing goalscoring issues.

Against Harrow, Gassan Ahadme, Reeco Hackett, Michael Jacobs and Louis Thompson were used off the bench.

Hirst wasn’t called upon, along with Alex Bass, Kieron Freeman, Harvey Hughes and Harry Jewitt-White.

Although he is now likely to start Tuesday evening’s Papa John’s Trophy encounter with Crystal Palace under-21s.

He added: ‘I think those on the bench against Harrow could start against Palace.

‘It will give us a good opportunity to freshen it up.’

Hirst is on loan to Pompey until the season’s end, although the arrangement can be cancelled in January.

.. he has perhaps become disillusioned with the situation he finds himself!!!

He would perhaps have been happier if he was playing for Harrow, at least he would be playing for someone who believed in him.

Pull him out and bring him back, play him in the U23s until we can sort something that all parties can agree with.

We could try to switch him into defence as a Centre Half, he has good ground skills and the trend is now defenders who are comfortable with the all at their feet. I have seen that he works hard, understands the game and is very much a team player.

Just reading that comment means his direction is downwards and I do not feel he is a player who reacts well from a public dressing down, so we need to pull him out of that environment as soon as possible.

I wouldn't even want him playing for our under 23s, gets in the way of Wakeling, Pennant etc.

...totally understand your point!!!

This would be a short term measure in order to resolve his contract situation or find a placement where he will get game time, as at this moment, he needs to sort his head out and the club is a big part of, where does he go from here.

I think he's had enough opportunities now and it's time for him to move on to a level where he feels he can shine, maybe then if he delivers he can work his way back up the leagues. There's really no way I can see him getting a sniff of a start in our 1st team.

He's actually wasting his time/career time at the moment.

I think Hirst's contract is up at the end of the season I can't see him getting another deal so he'll be gone

The thing is the u23s don’t really play that many matches, so even if he were to come back from a short time it will really impact on those who need to be in that side. He’s had his chances, the club have got him some good loan moves,  it’s just not worked out.
