I don't see why, really. I think Soumare looks streets ahead.

I certainly wasn't suggesting that - more, that he is an out and out sitting defensive midfielder, that's his role. Soumaré - although deep lying, isn't. He certainly has the attributes to adapt to Wilf's role though.

I think BR's just giving Benko a confidence boost. I think Wilf will start at CB with Soumare taking his place in midfield.

Although Soumare isn't an out-and-out DM, I still think he'll get the nod ahead of Mendy for the role.

It'll be interesting to see won't it. 

 

It may be that he has convincingly established himself playing as a DM by the time that Mendy returns. I certainly think that he has the attributes. The worry is about that scenario, is that we really need N'didi there and I think that the option of redeploying his at CB is only a very short-term fix.

I saw a suggestion somewhere that he might play Bertrand as a CH.  He effectively plays there part of the time already when Ricardo bombs up the field, so this might work with Thomas a LB and no change then necessay in midfield.

Then why give mendy a new deal? We didn't buy Soumare as a DM, we bought him as a CM. We also have Choudhury still hanging around with no movement as to a transfer.

 

I think it would be poor mis management to put Soumare, who has no doubt been training alongside tielemans since he's been here. Yes, KDH can take Soumare's place but my point is that it's like a chessboard so why take one of our main summer targets and reposition him which in turn drags other players around. For what its worth on Saturday it's the last experiment before the PL start, so it's Choudhury for me, even though I think he needs to leave. We need to bed Soumare into that CM position.

We gave Mendy a new deal last year when Covid kicked off and there was uncertainty over finances and the transfer market. I don't really see how that affects Soumare's place in the squad today.

 

Where are you getting this from that we didn't buy Soumare as a DM? Do you know this or are you just guessing? I think Soumare was brought in to give us better cover for both Youri and Wilf, or even as a rotation option with those two. Don't see how Hamza still being here affects Soumare's position in the squad, either.

I'm guessing you are saying that using Soumare as a DM/the more defensive of the midfield two in front of the defence is repositioning him. Is that what you meant?

Exactly what CM position do you want to bed Soumare into? You've already made it clear that you don't think he can do Wilf's job. You said it was ludicrous to suggest that he could step in for Youri, so what is it he's meant to do in this team? Why do you think we have spent £20m on a Ligue 1 title winning midfielder? For him to sit on the bench watching Hamza and Mendy get picked ahead of him?

I expect Benkovic to get the start in the Charity Sheild ! It would be a slap in the face to him & Amartey to start Ndidi ahead of them. Perfect opportunity to see what Filip can do.

Agree to disagree. Proposing to utilise soumare for tielemans as first cover over maddiison is not the best idea though and our interpretation of Soumare's position's and quality's will have to be left debatable.

I agree with you that he should start but at the Spurs game when Fofana went off injured we had both Morgan and Amartey on the bench and decided to bring on Mendy and drop Ndidi to centre half which in my mind cost us the game.
