there is a serious point here - we’ve invested a fair bit into the ladies team and set up. Is Jonathon Morgan tactically up to the challenge ?

I cant really comment to much as I don't really watch womens football so I don't know what the levels are like in it tbh the only women sport that i've followed a bit is boxing,

Regardless it always seems to me that the coaching lets it down a bit every time i watch a women's match the amount of miss hit passes stands out to me surely that's a coaching thing?

I watched about 60% of that game abs by far the worst thing was the commentary.

The commentator just kept………. Putting huge………. Pauses in her……..sentences.

All the god-damned game. It was unlistenable.

A really poor result against one of the teams that we will probably fighting relegation with.  Lets be honest, Villa were worse than hopeless and our ladies should have been out of sight before they got their first goal from a dodgy free kick.  The second Villa goal was just shocking defensively, and we were really poor after that.   Flint who had been the best player on the pitch in the first half either ran out of steam, or just gave up the ghost after they went ahead.  The drop in quality from the first to the second half was a concern, maybe down to a lack of fitness.

.....Villa looked technically better than we did, the ball stuck and they passed it well!!!

We in turn struggled to get hold of the ball and failed to control it, taking it either with the wrong foot or just unable to stop the ball flying away leading the player to chase after it.

There are moments in the game where you expect certain positions to be covered but Flint had a hard job upfront with no support. Bayley-Gayle seemed always in two minds when in possession and failed to give the wide support which was needed so we could not stretch the play. We do need an out and out winger with some pace and Villa had a number #11 who was dangerous with good skills who if she had seen more of the ball we could have been an even more heavier defeat.

All down to coaching and until we stop challenging with the wrong foot and being off balanced every time, we are going to be cannon fodder. It was a good free kick by Villa but I have said before any balls played high at goal will always be very difficult for female goalkeepers, it is an obvious weakness and should be worked on tirelessly.

We had good chances to increase our lead but repeatedly shot at their keeper and you can't put that down to bad luck, just poor execution. I did notice that at the very end we attempted to bring the ball forward through good passing instead of playing the perfect ball for the forwards to run on to. You need to get the pace and direction just right and for the forward to execute, we looked a better team when we pass it through midfield than playing the ball through from the half way line.

There are massive limitations in the women's game and the first team that concentrates in exploiting this will get a great start. Pace is the big thing which needs to be sourced, and not just in the tempo which we play, but the individual we have out wide.

It’s an experience, they will be able to take this into other games. Moral of the story is finish your chances, it’s a bit like championship football, you can have bags of chances but switch of and become complacent and you’ll be punished. Hopefully the girls can learn from it and move on, besides the top teams the quality isn’t too far apart.

Just need to work on the finishing, we should have been at least 3-0 up at half time. Disappointing to lose though I thought Villa were largely awful.

Thought the right back was incredibly naive, laughing and joking with their striker who faked injury, only for Villa to target her within seconds of the restart. Missed two tackles because she wasn’t ready and left wide open space for the cross and goal.

Some of the touches were rusty and the finishing needs to be better. Don’t really feel Villa deserved to win that on the whole.

I thought we passed the ball well in the first half, we were played the ball quicker and were the more aggressive both in closing down and in the tackle. I agree about Bailey-Gayle, she offered nothing and looked way out of her depth to me. Second half we were ok to begin with, had a one on one that should have been despatched, but then after their 2 goals in a minute, we seemed to lose belief and lose our way  The managers substitutions didn't have any impact and to be honest we lost any structure that we may have had before.  It will be interesting to see how the manager Morgan gets on, because despite his long term involvement with the club, he will hopefully be judged on results and progress. He has some of the best facilities and backing in domestic ladies football, so now he really has to prove he is good enough at this level.

I know it's  early da⁹ys but they did only manage to stop up on the last day of the season. We will improve but it is a matter of when. Hope we can stop in this league at the end of the season.

Agree with this, Morgan seemed to not know how to react or lift the team.

Tactically you can see where teams can be exploited, not that she’s a target striker but getting Flint to push closer to the keeper would surely cause them some issues? Like it has been said unfortunately and not to be sexist the female keepers do tend to be on the shorter side, and this will surely play on their minds and out them under pressure a bit.

I imagine this could lead to lots of second balls to be won and potentially a few easy chances at goal?

After all the good work the Morgan family have done to develop the club there is a danger they could become more of an obstacle. Early days though.

I need a new women’s team to support after the demise of Loughborough Foxes.   It will probably end up being City but I’m not really feeling it yet.

From the very little I’ve seen of the women’s team, here’s my observations for anyone who is interested lol

Jonathan Morgan was very negative & conservative, especially after taking the lead. Playing a new system, with attacking wingers held back as wing backs was strange.

Very surprised Pumptre didn’t start, she’s always seen the stand out from the bits I’ve seen.

Tierney is very good on the ball & aggressive but struggled with her athleticism, they were just running away from her.

We lost control of the midfield when Barker went off. Was very impressed with O’Brien, especially when she dropped deeper but Pike was poor, brushed aside very easily.

McManus, Brougham & Flint look head and shoulders above the rest.

Morgan is going to have to learn and quickly about being a bit cuter when it comes to managing in the top leagues.

To be fair the girls weren’t bad, first half they battered Villa, but like a few have said naivety from some of the players meant they didn’t take the best of their chances, but it’s to be expected playing at this level for the first time as a club.

Like you say Barker marshalled the midfield well, and there seemed to be a loss of leadership in the middle of the park when she went off. Flint looks really good, showed some lovely touches in the first half and held the ball up well. There’s potential there, they just need to learn the lessons quickly and exploit obvious weaknesses in the opposition, which for Villa was definitely the goalkeeper and the wing backs for me, just didn’t stop crosses or defend the near post at all.

Morgan: We Gave It Everything
LCFC WOMEN

Jonathan Morgan saw plenty in LCFC Women’s performance against Aston Villa to feel confident that they can impress in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League this term.

- Tash Flint scored the opener at Banks’s Stadium but Villa’s quick-fire double turned the game around
- Manager Jonathan Morgan was pleased with large parts of Saturday’s performance from the Foxes
- A ruthlessness is required to turn good showings into points and wins, he believes

The Foxes were making their top-flight debut at Banks’s Stadium and held the advantage in the season opener until two goals in three minutes, from Sarah Mayling and former Fox Remi Allen, flipped the contest in Villa's favour.

Morgan felt City were unfortunate to come out on the wrong side of Saturday’s 2-1 scoreline, but admitted they needed to be better at both ends of the pitch during crucial moments of the game.

“Honestly I think we were brilliant today,” he told LCFC TV in his post-match interview. “I think we were incredibly unlucky. For anyone that watched the game, we dominated large parts.

I said to the girls, you’ve left everything out on the pitch and that’s all you can ask for, but we are disappointed.

Jonathan Morgan LCFC TV

“Out of possession we were fantastic, a bit wasteful in front of goal which is a bit disappointing, but as you can see by the two goals that were scored, it was 60 seconds of madness.

“Even so, we’ve got to hold ourselves much better than what we did in that moment of the game. It would have been 1-1, it would have been a point rather than a loss, or we could have nicked something at the end. But I said to the girls they've left everything out on the pitch and that’s all you can ask for, but we are disappointed.”

Natasha Flint’s goal, six minutes ahead of the break, gave the visitors a lead their dominance deserved, although failing to increase their goal tally ultimately proved costly.

Despite that, Morgan was keen to look at the bigger picture and the positive signs which can be built on heading into next Sunday’s visit of Manchester United to King Power Stadium (2pm BST kick-off).

Further analysing the 90 minutes, the LCFC Women manager commented: “First half, it was all us. We’ve got to capitalise on that more. Last season, we knew we could outscore the opposition, whereas this year we’ve got to be prepared to understand that we’ve got to take our chances.

“I think we made some significant opportunities compared to Aston Villa and they’ve converted two and we’ve converted one. We go into next week and we just go again really.

“What the girls will see is that our style of play works, the way we set up works. I think all it is now is a bit more of the finer detail and a bit more ruthlessness in front of goal. We need to minimise significant errors which unfortunately cost us.

“I know [Sam Tierney] will be the one that is most upset about that, but we’ve got to make sure that all of us in the squad and on the team are strong enough.”
