“They’re a good footballing side”

That’s handy then. It’s the exact game we’re playing.

More elegant than saying “Thank **** I’m not commentating on the Burnley match again” though.

Any mention of luck or unlucky - Football is a game of skill not luck. If you hit the post, it was a good effort but wasn’t good enough.

Keeper makes a great save, his skill level was better than yours.

Had a lot of possession and shots but just couldn’t score? You weren’t unlucky, you need to work on your finishing.

Only had one shot for the game and won 1-0, you didn’t get lucky, where it mattered you were better than the opponents.

Words like transition, process etc... that are just basically small talk for defending crap performances. There aren't many situations where they genuinely apply.

Team A deserved to win that game today’

No they didn’t - the only stat that counts is how many times you put the ball in the net.

Good to see Steve Bruce still taking an interest in football.

"just about"

"He just about got his head to it"

"he just about cleared it"

What does it even mean? Did he clear it or not? It's an easy statement to make?

If my boss asked me if I've finished a project I'm working on and I say Just about, he's going to think I'm nearly done. In other words I haven't finished so to say someone just about cleared it after they've hoofed it into the stand doesn't sound to me that they Just about cleared it, they cleared it.

Winds me up every single time.

“These are some of the best fans in the world”

Usually when referencing Liverpool fans.

Why? Because they have a good singsong before the game?

Used to hate the bumming of Portsmouth fans in their prem years too, all because some c*** in the stands rang a bell for 90 minutes

Your Man Uniteds, Your Chelseas, Your Liverpools

In a similar non-footy vein, I once saw Sean Fitzpatrick, ex All-Black talk about ‘your Nonus your Rokocokos, your Sivivatus’ as if there were thousands of them
