True but the Aussie squad back then was far better than this one.

Basically it's Root vs Smith. If Root continues in the same form he's been in this year then we've got a chance at sneaking a couple of wins I reckon.

Hopefully you're right, but I think they look stronger on paper than 17/18 and we look weaker. Additionally I'd fancy at least two others from their top order aside from Smith chipping in with some big innings. Malan, Burns etc will probably surprise everyone now and put in some big performances.

Not really. Australia have two World class batsmen in Smith and Labuschagne. I'm expecting the South African to score more than Smith in this series.

On Aussie pitches, their batsmen are better and their bowlers, their starting XI will be stronger overall. It will require more than just Root to have a good series with the bat, someone else must score heavily if we're to win any tests I reckon. One of Malan, Pope or Buttler must stand up and be counted. If there is to be 2 day/nighters now, that will help.

Realistically, with the amount of runs that get scored in Australia, we're going to need at least 5 centuries. I just can't see where they come from in our batting lineup. That's barring a very low scoring series which I cannot envisage.

I could see us sneaking a win, but we won't win the series. I want to be optimistic but just can't be unfortunately lol

Anderson rested before a ball is bowled.

Not picked or injured, makes sense but rested lol.

Englands current management team gives me flash backs to the 90s.

Anything better the 5-0 would be a bonus, can see it being very someone side.

Another series of Root out, all out.

Definitely - 3 day turnaround and we saw last tour how lethal he can be with that pink ball (got a 5fer I think?)

Actually agree with the management's thinking for once.

For those who like their leaders to be confident...

Joe Root, 'avoiding defeat in the first test would be a brilliant start to the series' lol

Sadly, it's very realistic. I know what he means and I agree 100%, but he'd have Churchill turning in his grave with that one.

I was thinking about forcing myself to stay up til midnight to watch the first few overs but the last time I did that, Harmison bowled his first delivery to 2nd slip so I don't think I'll bother

In years past, I've stayed up watching it til 1 or 2, then fallen asleep listening to TMS, then woken up to hear we've collapsed or taken no wickets or both.

Then I've been a zombie at work.

Tonight: a new strategy. A wee kip during the evening, to try to last longer after midnight.

At my age, most kips involve a wee

Very excited to have my days ruined just seconds after waking up for most of the next month.

The worst bit is you get into your head a worst case scenario what’s happened overnight….and then it’s usually worse than the worst case scenario.

Really gutted the Barmy Army won't be there in full force this time tbh.

Has anyone even managed to get out there?

I'm not sure, don't think so.

I think I heard there will be about 1000 but mainly ex pats living over there.

Hope I’m wrong but can’t see us winning 1 test. Root is due a poor series after being brilliant this year with the bat. Don’t think we have the bowlers to take 20 wickets and can’t see anyone stepping up with the bat.
