He did well to save us that season, took over at a time when the atmosphere was toxic.

RIP

Toxic for a good reason though.

RIP Gordon.

Very sad news.

I think his 1st game was Plymouth at home, who we managed to beat, but I remember it being a bit desperate.

Held it together and got us safe in dramatic style.

My memory isn't great but I think that run in also was the famous monks at Ipswich, which was a mad day 😆

Ha Ha memories!! I enjoyed that pitch invasion.

Then I was fortunate to talk to him later that night.

Without his work we probably wouldn't have had the O'Neill era.

RIP.

We had the Little era next after Gordon who was, as reported, just a tad upset that he didn't get contracted to take on the role. Martin George had other ideas which resulted in the series of Wembley play-off finals.

Sad news.

I always found it a bit incongruous that a former manager of Newcastle and Everton ended up as assistant manager of a run-of-the-mill second division club 6 or 7 years later. Today's equivalent would be, say, Alan Pardew as assistant manager at West Brom.

Did his job in saving us and offered us 6 months of a kinder, less complex, less superior management style than the grotesque ego of his boss and predecessor Pleat

I do recall the tannoy guy at Bristol Rovers had said that Leicester had only drew with Oxford, meaning WBA had stayed up, the Albion fans was going nuts only to realise in the end it was bullshit, No surprised he got sacked

As for that Oxford game, horrible game than seemed to last an eternity, not a good day for the nerves

I think keeping us up on the last day against Oxford was probably his finest hour as a manager. It would definitely have been a mistake to keep him on afterwards and not appoint Brian Little but when he took over he had 1 job to do and he managed to it so those of us who were supporters at the time will always remember him fondly. There's a nice moment in the footage of the Oxford game, just after the final whistle when you can see him blowing out his cheeks in sheer relief, although nobody at that precise time knew what had happened at the Bristol Rovers WBA game.

I was on the pitch too. How bizarre was it that at the end of our worst ever season (until Holloway that is), when we finished in our lowest ever position and had been knocked out of the League Cup, the ZDS Cup and the FA Cup at the first hurdle, we would end up celebrating like that. There should have been an open-top bus tour and a reception at Victoria Park or Town Hall Square the next day. But would anybody have turned up for it?
