The Running Thread (formerly How fast can you run a 5k?)

I did Stretford parkrun yesterday near Manchester. It's a fast one if anyone's ever in the area. Starts and finishes on a running track with over 700 there. Much better conditions for running than recently!

I raced a 1500m at Stretford in the late 80s and there were a couple of kids with air rifles shooting at the athletes down the back straight. One of the runners took one in the thigh.

They ran off over the fields but were caught and dealt with.

Happening to all of us (apart from the freak in this thread that says they love running in heatwaves lol)

Has been a top notch summer for running. Been ramping up output, make hay while the sun shines.

You are built like an East African long distance runner

Went out for an hour and a bit this evening, I simply cannot pace myself in the heat and just set off as normal; wind up looking an absolute state

People were waiting for me to turn green so they could cross the road

First run this morning since 30th June. Not been out for various reasons but ffs you soon lose it!

Ive massively fell off the past few months, knowing how hard these first few are going to feel is adding to my delay in getting back. Set myself a goal on Sunday to get out for 3 x 5ks this week, its Wednesday and ive still not been for one.

I got up at 5 yesterday to do a 5km but just didn’t do it. Today just went for it, it wasn’t nice but it’s a start back at it. Just go for it today/tomorrow and get the first one out of the way.

Just done my third PB in the HM at 93 mins. Was aiming for another sub 90 but realised about halfway the aches in my arse cheeks from leg day yesterday were too much and holding me back

No fluid or gels either so am feeling it a bit now.

I’ve had my best week in a few months and back up to 10 miles on my long run today. Nothing spectacular and just going out with the intention of keeping my heart rate as low as I can to get the distance done.

Going to run with the big boys at Poole Parkrun this weekend. The weekend just gone, winning time was 15.37 and 77 people finished sub 20 mins lol

Frustratingly not quite in PB shape otherwise it would have been a full send on a dead flat course. Should be fun none the less.

Haven’t gone out and leathered it for a while so I thought I’d aim for my 5K PB tonight. Finished 38 seconds off it but that was over 5 years ago. Could have got a bit closer I think as I decided early doors I wouldn’t do it but kept pushing to stay under 22 mins.

Pleased with that but it’s vile!

Managed to fall over like a pensioner from one of those rise and recline adverts on ITV3 on Tuesday and have been nursing the cuts and bruises since. I think that's the first time I've fallen over whilst running since the Brown administration, so i'll take that.

Really struggling to motivate myself at the moment.

I've got Northampton half booked in September which is coming round fast and I've not even started to try and shift the World Cup beers yet.

I'm usually good at getting back on it when I force the motivation, as I don't normally run, only when I've got an event in, but it just ain't happening.

Not looking forward to it right now lol

A perfect tactical 800m race by Georgia Hunter-Bell at the Commonwealth Games.

She’s one of the best racers in the world at the moment. Many athletes can run fast when they have pacemakers but if you want to win medals you have to be able to race and she can race!

Had a good week so far in a bid to push up my monthly distance – 18km Monday, 10km Tuesday, Half Marathon yesterday, Half Marathon tonight. Tonight felt really good, temperature definitely helped.

Up to 1,900km / 1,180miles for 2026 so far

Crazy effort mate, I’d say your body must be ****ed but I guess you’ve got used to it.

Yep sorry it’s me and that time again 🤣

I’ve now officially signed up for Prostate United 2026.

This will be my fourth consecutive yearrunning 5km every day throughout October in support of Prostate Cancer UK, but it will also be my final Prostate United challenge.

Before I start, I just wanted to say a huge thank you to the Leicester City family.  Over the last three years, the generosity and kindness shown by so many people on FoxesTalk and across the wider Leicester City fanbase has honestly been overwhelming. Whether you’ve donated, shared my fundraising page, sent a message of encouragement or simply asked how the challenge was going, you’ve helped me more than you’ll ever know.

Thanks to your support, alongside my family, friends, colleagues, clients and Team Leicester City, we’ve raised morethan £13,000 for Prostate Cancer UK. This year, I’d love to finish by taking that total beyond £20,000.

One of the highlights of last year’s challenge was having the privilege of running alongside Leicester City legend and First Team Coach, Andy King. It was a brilliant experience and a reminder of what makes our club so special. Whatever happens on the pitch, Leicester people have always looked after one another.

After four years, I feel it’s the right time to finish while I still have the motivation to give it everything. October has become a month completely dominated by running, fundraising, aching legs, early mornings and trying to convince myself that setting the alarm before work is somehow a good idea! Also after a heart to heart with my family they were very open and honest about how difficult it is for them to see the toll it takes on me, both physically and mentally, alongside my job and the everyday challenges modern life throws at us.

More importantly, I want to finish on a high and, hopefully, leave having made a lasting contribution to a cause that means so much.

The reason I keep doing this is simple. Every 45 minutes, a man loses his life to prostate cancer in the UK. If this challenge encourages just one person to understand their risk, speak to a loved one or get checked earlier, then every mile will have been worthwhile.

If you’re able to support me one last time, I’d be incredibly grateful. If not, simply sharing the page or helping spread the message could make all the difference.

Thank you once again for everything you’ve done over the last three years. The Leicester City community has been a huge part of this journey, and it would mean the world to have you alongside me for one final October.

In will share a link to my just giving fundraising page a bit nearer the time.

Now let’s see if this 52-year-old body can survive another 155 kilometres… and hopefully Leicester can make the month a little less stressful than last season!

Up the Foxes. 💙🦊

Solid 11 miler this morning but 3 months ago this distance was a stroll in the park where as it’s taken it out of my legs a bit. Really need to be consistently doing leg day.
