Players coming to us as top 6-10 PL club will expect a certain level of pay and contract length , they all have agents who know the score.

If they're top players they'll see us as a stepping stone and it's in their interests to milk that as much as they can so will only agree on contract , length and £s that suits their personal plans, that means if they know they are wanted they're going to leave it until the last year to make them more attractive for their next move. When it comes to agreeing a contract we're inevitably going to have to concede to them if we want them.

That's not to excuse any bad buys but then all clubs are prone to that only the Super 6 can afford to mess things up.

It's a difficult situation to manage for a club in our position they have the best hand in this.

Also it's unfair to compare us to Liverpool or any of the Super 6 as they're in a different buying and selling market.

I’d imagine that once the summer picture becomes clearer we will retain Evans, Vardy, Maddison and Wilf on new contracts but otherwise I don’t think this is the main issue.

For me the main issue is that Perez, Mendy, Bertrand, Yannik, Praet and even Albrighton are currently paid more than their worth and we can’t get rid.

Pérez and choudhury but ESPECIALLY Vestergaard bertrand are the problem. The rest are decent to good players! Good squad players. Vestergaard and bertrand are unplayable. Pérez and choudhury at least aren't but are overpaid ofc

Players whose contracts expire in Summer 2023;

Youri Tielemans, Caglar Soyuncu, Daniel Amartey, Ayoze Perez, Jamie Vardy, Kasper Schmeichel, Nampalys Mendy, Ryan Bertrand, Hamza Choudhury and Jonny Evans (10 players).

Players whose contracts expire in Summer 2024;

Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison, Kelechi Iheanacho, Yannik Vestergaard, Dennis Praet, Like Thomas and Marc Albrighton (7 players).

Schmeichel we probably can't really replace until he leaves anyway - we already know the club are seemingly looking at replacements

Tielemans, Soyuncu, Perez, Mendy, Bertrand, Choudhury, Vestergaard, Praet the club are already trying to shift - 5 of them I don't particularly care that much about the fee, just get them off the wage bill

Iheanacho I expect will be sold within the next year

Amartey I don't know what the plan is really for him

Evans is expected to get a 1 year extension

Luke Thomas apparently has options to extend in his contract

James Maddison apparently has an option to extend in his contract

Vardy wants to sign a new deal, I 100% believe he will get one as well

Albrighton will be one of those older players that probably gets 1 year extensions as they are useful to keep around until they need to retire (like we were doing with Morgan and Fuchs, and will do with Evans)

Ndidi I can see us giving him a new deal

True. But Perez on £80k a week and Hamza on £50k is utterly mental regardless of them occasionally giving us something on the pitch.

That's mad, and literally stealing a living, if true.

But more fool us for giving him a 2 year contract on that wage.

Even if you take out the injury/not wanting to play aspect of last season, he was not worth anything like that. Absolutely crazy if true.

A living? A fortune. It was unbelievable how bad he was last season.

It could have been a whole lot worse with him regards that contract length

Point to a club that doesn't make poor signings?

There isn’t one. But we have spunked some money over Rodger’s spell haven’t we and overpaid players, which is a theme of the thread and our lack of activity in the market.

3 years he was looking for originally wasn't it?  Still going to cost us at least a couple of Million to pay him off.  The guy has been an absolute fraud of a footballer.

Let’s face it we are being left behind and unless something out of the blue happens, which I suspect will not, we will start next season with virtually the same squad.

The present financial system is not sustainable, the premier league being the most obvious but all leagues and clubs are paying more on transfers and wages than they recieve in gate reciepts, merchandise, sponserships. and pukka pie sales

It aint only paying players. Stadium upkeep, insurances, taxes, team buses, equipment etc, and how many staff does a club have? Lawyers, accountants, security, physios, cleaners, groundsman, scouts, coaches and more.

Where does FIFA and the FA get their money from, furnishing offices must cost a fortune alone.

TV money might be holding it all together for now but remember that for every real pound note that is paid in, or promised, the accountants spend an imaginary fiver. Lose that pound income and you are 6 pound in debt. (something like that)

My point?

Agents and players might be predicting a Bubble Burst and wanting to cash in with big signing on fees now

Buying clubs will play along through short term neccesity, as they always do

A football reset.

Some players might be happier with a secure long term income for now but soon those big contracts might become worthless. Grab a signing on fee (and a promised decent weekly wage) while you can?
