In hindsight, should have been sold a couple of years ago when his form had dipped and only had two years  left on his contract. A poor Euros probably didn't help his confidence that summer either.

I can't imagine the fee offered last summer was enough to make us sell him considering we had no money to buy another player.

Cheers! Occasionally I do, although others speak more eloquently on here than me by far! :)

We can now move on from pretending he was Maldini, when the reality is, without Jonny Evans next to him he was a trainwreck

If any other player, Amartey for example, had starting kicking shit out of Wilson (I believe) after that Bournemouth goal and cost us Champions League they would be slaughtered for it, for him, because he was seen as this ‘tough guy’ and not the hot head he was, it was ignored.

He’s a good defender, he will do well in the worlds most boring, defensive team, but so would Liam Moore, the only sad thing here is we didn’t get any money for him.

Athletico wanted him last year but we didnt sell, even though Rodgers was never going to play him. We really have some jokers running the club. Good luck to Cags.

Do you know how much they offered?

Rodgers committed four crimes.

- Preventing the club from financing itself by finding relatives unknowns and selling them as big names

- Ignoring the academy

- Ignoring the scouting

- Ignoring the physios

And those crimes fit perfectly and inversely with our previous fantastic footballing strategy.

The only thing worse is that I've seen nothing to indicate we're reversing this trend, or even realise we made substantial errors.

Early days though I guess!

I was no great fan of Puel's at the time but he did a decent stabalising and recruitment job for us after Ranieri had lost the plot after the title winning season and when successor Shakespeare was clearly out of his depth here in his new found managerial role for those few months. So I sometimes think sacking Puel was the worst thing the club did over the past decade on reflection, seeing how his successor Rodgers (albeit who appeared to be a good appointment/name at the time), then 'slowly but surely' systematically drove the club into the ground single handedly it seems into a side sleepwalking to relegation, with some of the dross he signed two years ago (Daka, Soumare, Vestergaard, Bertrand), then of course especially last season when playing certain players over others because of either severe managerial misjudgement or personality clash traits, rather than their actual ability ie Ward over Iversen, Amartey over Soyuncu, Soumare over Mendy and so the list goes on!

It was hellish to watch our transition from counter attacking to possession, and he was rightly criticised for some inter personal skills and some man management, but he used the scouting and academy to keep us afloat, got contract extensions and built a great team.

We were on course for greater things. Now we're nose diving fast. It must be stated he was largely around when Vichai was in charge. I don't think be could have stayed honestly. The fans didn't want his boring, sensible and slow drive. They wanted Brendan's joyride. Pity no one stopped him before he crashed the car.

I never understood the Soyuncu thing with Puel. We were waiting for his English to improve? I recall Brendan got the best out of Soyuncu, yet didn't follow the club's formula: sell him at the top of his game to fund further successes. A crime.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and all that and whether or not the fact Puel got sacked from his role with us then muddied his reputation and then meant nobody else in the Premier League or even Championship would take him on thereafter maybe said something at the time (although I heard Watford were interested shortly after he was fired), or maybe he simply returned to manage St Etienne in Ligue 1 as more as a convenience and comfort zone thing, having had enough of being sacked  over here not once but twice....we'll possibly never know but to my knowledge that was his last job and he may well disappear into oblivion now. All the same I agree that Puel had a certain 'shelf life' aspect to his time with us at the time and following his bright start in charge after Shakespeare then he really did end up going through the managerial motions with us over time, despite building a good side capable of regular top ten finishes in the Prem. However at the time that was deemed inadequte I guess, given our very recent title win at the time and so he lasted about as long as most expected in the end, if not a wee bit longer even. After that Palace defeat at home in the February it was clear that was likely to be the final straw when going by a good chunk of fans' reaction in the stadium on the final whistle, coupled with the anti Puel online dialogue - and so most by then were baying for his blood, especially with a name like Brendan Rodgers waiting in the wings....weird how things turn out sometimes!

It still irks me that the fanbase were more vociferous about Puel's slow build than Rodgers' destruction. If he wants out the management game give him our DOF job!

No idea. It was mentioned in the BBC article on pg1, that Athletico wanted him last season, but we didnt want to sell. It just seems strange why, when Rodgers obviously wasn't going to play him, and he was going to walk away for free.

Yeah, BR probably couldn't have done any worse than Rudkin over the past two years here I suppose - but then again....!

Well if they only offered for example £5m and we had no money to buy anyone else, that might explain why we had to keep him. He wasn't one of our highest earners either.

Good shout actually but I suppose the Puel ship has long since sailed now, four and a bit years ago to be precise. He would probably have made a decent DOF, given how his recruitment was in his managerial role here. It's just that he wasn't great at man management (re things like how he treated Adrian Silva, Vardy at times too and was reluctant to play Soyuncu due to his limited English, etc). Plus his turgid tactics never endeared him to the crowd, along with his lack of charisma with it but behind the scenes he'd have been free from all that, as you kind of alluded to I suppose!

Puel was a ruthless bastard with an eye (and contacts) for talent.  Whether that fits the club, you could argue both sides.  As Geoff Peters made clear, the players and staff were glad to see him go, and no doubt he made Rodgers’ act an especially welcome change.

But he was the mild, corrective dose of poison we desperately needed when he arrived -- and just as desperately last summer.  Instead we got endless vacillation and mixed messages regarding the likes of Soumare and even Vestergaard, who could and should have been shipped out for real money.  He would at least have sent them packing.  And sold (instead of giving) Soyuncu to Atletico, given neither he nor Rodgers rated him.

I can understand why the seniors wouldn't want him around. Yet he got the younger players to extend their contracts (unlike Rodgers).

...Puel's problem is communication, why put him in a position where he needs to excel in a role where he shuts down!!!

Another one that won't be missed by me.  I will remember him for that costly melt down v Bournemouth and for stopping/feigning injury v Spurs which I believe led to his fall out with BR.

Kinda irrelevant unless we know how much they offered. If they only offered a nominal fee, then what would be the point of selling? You'd be one player down and without the funds to buy a replacement.

Anything better than nothing given BR shitcanned him, plus the saving of £xxk per week in wages. Good luck to cags, on balance he did alright for me, Bournemouth being a lowlight
