Probably under instruction from Enzo, who wanted possession and control. Enzo didn't want us counter attacking because he didn't want us then becoming exposed at the back.

He's one of my biggest disappointments this season. I really did think he'd stand up in the Prem. As whilst not every run or tick would come off, some of them would. Wingers can be mercurial. However he has lost all his mojo and in my mind is playing pretty shockingly. He's not taking defenders on at all and turning back or lateral every time. Thereby slowing all out play down. He's basically resembling Harvey Barnes bad days. Problem is this Mavididi's every match day currently.

Strikes me as another that was probably an exciting player in his youth but had it coached out of him.

I remember Enzo constantly subbing him then bad things happening soon afterwards when he did it.

Barnes bad days were honking. His race could be run after only 10mins. Did absolutely nothing then. And that's how I see Mav's game after game currently. Big fat zero!

He has always had that in him. Seems to get a bit braver after being benched for a game or two then reverts back to type. He has it in him to be better than his current performances.

Poor old VK must have made hundreds of overlapping runs this season, and been ignored pretty much every time by Mavididi, in favour of a safe pass back into CM on most occasions. I realise VK is hardly Marcelo but he has fizzed in some decent balls from the byline when given the chance.

Worst game over ever seen him play was last night against Palace. He was the cause of so many attacks breaking down with poor decisions or execution.

 

However, he is one of the biggest confidence players we have and really does look a completely different player when he has no confidence. It was the same last season when he lost a bit of belief in the middle to end part of the season.

This infuriates me. When we are on a transition, he just stands there waiting for the ball to feet, rather than making a run in behind. That said, in the first half last night his running off the ball was better, so perhaps Ruud has been working on this with him.

Not just that, he’s not got an alternative left winger to rotate with, to sometimes be replaced by and vice versa.

They’re not, you’re right. But playing wing backs means an extra defensive player on the pitch. I actually don’t know is that is a good thing
