It's still early days, but so far the officiating has been very good. It really puts into context how shit referees and VAR are in the Premier League.

From what I've seen, the referees are getting a lot of the initial decisions correct in the first instance, and I've also been very pleasantly surprised to see them letting the game flow and not blowing up for the slightest little things.

When they have got it wrong, VAR has pretty much always led to the correct decision being made in the end. Perhaps the only controversial one was the handball in the Belgium game, which is a debatable one.

The semi-automated offside system is head and shoulders above the system of manually drawing lines in terms of both speed and accuracy of decision.

It gives me faith that VAR doesn't have to kill my enjoyment of English football, it CAN be done well.

The semi-automated offside tech is ace. I'd  be delighted next season if we just had that and goal line tech in use.

Also they should introduce the rule of  only captains being able to talk to the ref unless the ref addresses a player.

Biggest controversy so far involved English officials. No surprise there. Ours are quite possibly the worst in Europe - a product of unaccountability though, so should be expected.

They always try to but never seems to last like most new rules .

The Belgium second disallowed goal was controversial but then handball always has been really .

Agree on the general speed of decisions and effectiveness

Also right to say there has been more respect shown and the ref seems to be in authority.

The automated system is coming about a month into the season I think.

These are supposedly the best refs so they should be an improvement on what we see weekly.

Offside's have been decided quick, that has to be a good thing and haven't spent ages looking at incidents. Although to be fair there hasn't been too many decisions to be made yet.

Games have been played in a pretty good spirits so far, not seen too much playacting or whinging, but I'd imagine that comes in the longer the tournament goes on as the pressure and occasions rise.

Makes you wonder why the clubs didn’t vote for the semi automated offside earlier ?

Down to money or did they not trust it ?

I did read one problem was the fact we use a different sort of ball to those in Europe and on the International stage.

Even now I noticed one tweet saying it will still be slightly different next season .

But still better than the dodgy likes and needing a zillion checks ?

Ahh that makes sense then, Nike still haven't sorted out the technology but are the official ball of the Premier League.

Well it will be more improved, but you just know that the refs are gonna somehow manage to turn picking when a ball was kicked into a massive drama lol

Barely noticed the refs except when they’ve accidentally got in the way and touched the ball. Miles above premier league refereeing and so far VAR has been used well. The offsides the biggest improvement. Sort of love seeing teams celebrate wildly just to have the check chalk it off, like in the game last night Jota going mad to get the ball off the keeper even though they’ve just scored a winner to go 2-1 up, just to do that stupid ‘I’ve just had a baby’ celebration. Tough luck, chap. Sort of ruined by the fact they got a proper goal a few minutes later but still, enjoyed him looking a right tit.

Thought that was a foul on the defender for Germany's first goal today.

No chance, it isn’t a non-contact sport, even though at times it seems that way. The defending is weak and needs to be a lot stronger there

I may have missed it but I've not seen a ref going to the pitch side tv.

Cant fault it at all, refs let play go where they can and the VARs are swift.

Hopefully we are still in the Premier league once tge automated VAR is rolled out😁

Shearer with a little dig at the PL refs .

He might well be right but hopefully won’t moan then if Newcastle have a goal disallowed next season like Belgium’s “handball” one ..

Nearly halfway through the second round of games and still no penalty has been awarded!
