I imagine this lad has saw the Bellinghams pathway and been advised a season in the Championship will do him a lot of good.

He wont be here long but this protects us and gets us a good fee down the line.

I think we are just waiting for his birthday in August.

Hasn't it been reported Evans turned 17 a week or two ago?

I mean it’s great we get for a littler

longer but he will just go before signing professional. For pretty much nothing.

That was my presumption but the reports today have been fairly certain his pro deal will activate in July and legally binding.

Not convinced it can be legally binding

suspect it protects Monga but not the club

If so it does however ensure that we get a fee proportionate to the salary we’ve offered him related to his age.  ie: if we’ve offered him four years age 17 at 30/40k then anyone signing him would struggle to convince a tribunal he’s worth less than 15/20m with a sig sell on clause. (Of course his performances next season would also influence the upside).

Are scholar deals just rolling annual deals until they turn 17 and then pro deals are arranged?

Reason I ask is because in order to break the scholar deal and move clubs, players have to notify the club and the league by mid June ahead of next season. But what happens if they turn 17 mid season and refuse a pro deal? With Monga, if it isn't binding then he could notify us in June 2026 he is leaving but reports seems pretty certain the pro deal is signed. I think Birmingham did something similar with Jude Bellingham.

No idea

its just that I’ve seen too many articles say that you can’t sign a pro deal till you’re 17.  Getting around that this way surely defeats the point of not allowing a 15 or 16 y o to sign a binding pro deal ???

It’s actually mental when you process just how young Monga actually is!!!

He was in in Year 2 in Primary school when we won the Premier League & Year 7 when we won the FA Cup! lol

He came up against Axel Tuanzebe when he came on against Ipswich, who’s TWELVE years older than him!

Again to put that into school context when Tuanzebe was practicing for his GCSE’S, Monga had just left nursery!

And for that last 30 minutes he took him for a walk down that left hand side!  lol

Serious talent!

Pretty sure you can sign a pre pro contract that will automatically activate once you hit 17.

so I think even if he somehow left during his scholarship then he would be legally bound to honour his pre agreed pro contract.

This is from the prem website "If your child refuses an offer of retention and a new Club wishes to register your child, the new Club will have to pay money called compensation to your child’s previous Club. It’s also important to know that your child cannot be offered a professional contract until their U16 year or enter into one until they are 17 years old."

So does this mean he could be offered one this year? But it simply doesn't become active until he is 17

I should Never trust wiki

Actually you might be right. Some places saying 4th June but the OS site has him as 21st August (although not sure how much of a good source the OS is!)

21st Aug is also Big Niges's birthday.

12 years isn’t an unusual age gap in football?

He was playing alongside Vardy who is 23 years older than him…that’s a bit different! :D

A lot of pressure and scrutiny on a young scrap of a lad. No doubt he will be a good pro, but alle 16 yo's who.have broken through in champo have been physical specimens, super quick or super athletic. He seems more technical to me rather than a rooney, walcott, bellingham type. I could be wrong but expecting him to do anything more than a bit part role next year would seem a stretch.

Genuine question; have you watched him play? He is of course a highly technical player but he's got a decent turn of pace, though really it's his strength and physicality that has really impressed me. Tuanzebe (who is a physical specimen) had to resort to fouling him as he couldn't shrug him off the ball.

Not expecting him to start every game and get 20+ goal contributions, but would be utterly amazed if he doesn't have an important role to play next year. He's that good. How it translates into end product will be the real test.

It’s fantastic news he’s staying. Not only do we get something to look forward to next season, the club also have an opportunity to make some serious profit if he turns out to be as good as he’s made out.

Can other clubs still try to sign him?

Now he is on a scholarship with a professional contract clause, no club is allowed to contact Monga or his family directly. They would need permission from Leicester to make any contact.

Also, under FA rules, any public statements made by “an official of or intermediary for a club expressing interest in an academy player whose registration is held by another club or a player with whom another club has entered into a pre-registration agreement which remains current” are not allowed.

Leicester are now in a much stronger position in terms of retaining Monga, and the only way another club can sign him now is if they make an approach to them and negotiate a transfer fee, which, considering the overwhelming opinion about the youngster’s potential, means it would be extremely expensive.

It is worth stating that players under the age of 18 can only sign contracts for a maximum of 3 years and the earliest he can sign is his 17th birthday and even if he's obligated to sign a professional contract at the end of his scholarship (which surely can't be legal?) there'd be nothing to stop him refusing to sign for anything more than a year and leaving on a free at the end of it.

All this really does is give us breathing room to continue to develop him until he's 17 and maybe tie him up for a short while after that.

If he turns out to be an absolute super-star he could still end up getting poached for criminally little money and in the best case scenario for us (a full three year contract after he turns 17) he'd still be free of any obligations to us by 20.
