You can see he is a good defender but he just cannot be trusted with the ball at his feet.

Just do what Wayne Brown used to always do and hit the big man or channels.

These apps match ratings are a plague. They frequently give for example Thomas a good rating despite everyone seeing with their own eyes he was terrible. I wouldn't really read anything into them.

Possession football over index defender ratings as completed passes are factored in. Most of these completed passes are sideways nothing burgers.

Yep. It'll rate someone who made for example 45 good passes and 5 bad ones over somebody who made 30 good passes.

Martin probably thinks they're gospel.

personally thought he was meh again last night, seemed like he worse lead boot, could hardly jump got turned a good few times, one should have lead to a goal, pass at times was shocking too,

just cos we won shouldnt overlook the fact hes been crap and for a while too, should be anywhere near the team

Feels at times like some people come up with their match assessment without watching the game. Understandably a bit nervous first half but really strong second half. Yes he’s been very underwhelming since he’s been here, but yesterday wasn’t one of those cases.

Played a really good through ball to Riis but then kept trying it and constantly giving it away

Some good defending when Braybrooke had given the ball away

Don't actually think that ball was for Riis lolon the whole he was fine but because Wigan are so crap the things he did wrong didn't get punished

It was for Alves on a full switch

He was complete garbage again yesterday, and we have to be very, very careful thinking any corner is turned with this player. There were many terrible passes ( a horrific one to Chaplin later on the first half really stood out ). He can block, and he can head the ball out, but even his tackling is completely woeful (a terrible challenge later in the first half where he didnt back himself to tackle a very poor L1 player ). Very limited attributes even at this level.

We are sadly at the point where if he doesnt make a horrific mistake that loses us a game, he is somehow 'alright', and this boggles my mind.  Any team that can press, has some pace, is willing to pressure him or requires him to anything other than block is going to get a mistake out of him. Just because Wigan were probably one of the worst teams we have ever seen, doesnt mean its somehow ok.

When you consider how much he costs us, and who he keeps out of the team, he a complete travesty of a player and should be nowhere near the starting 11.

Utterly dreadful for a £12m defender. Run of the mill performance for an L1 player.

That’s the point. If you watched the game as a neutral you’d say he was broadly on a par with the Wigan centre halves, he committed a stupid challenge for a yellow but he did make a few decent defensive contributions.

The issue is we’ve paid more for him than Wigan’s entire first team squad a few times over, he’s earning probably four times more than their highest earning player and he didn’t stand out one little bit against the weakest team in this league. By any measure that is appalling.
