I think after departures we would end up with the below from the current squad

GK: Stolarczyk

RB: Justin, Woyo

CB: Vestergaard, Coady, Souttar, Nelson

LB: Thomas

CM: Winks, Skipp, Ndidi, Choudhury

RW: Fatawu, McAteer, Ayew

LW: Mavididi, De Cordova-Reid

ST: Daka

Contract not renewed: Ward, Iversen, Vardy

Sold / loaned: Hermansen, Ricardo, Faes, Okoli, Kristiansen, Soumare, El Khannouss - only one I am not really sure on whether we would keep them or not is Ricardo, the rest are definitely gone if we go down

Meaning we probably need at least:

GK x1

CB x1

LB x1

AM x1

ST x1

What you put in is minimal what we need. I'd say winks will go and I'd be surprised if an overseas team didn't  come in for Ndidi.

It's a massive rebuild required. Can we do it? We should raise a few bob from the sales in theory. Will the transfer embargo stick?

Cannon and Souuttar are top quality championship players. Given the embargo we are likely to get, keeping them is a priority

I’d argue against this idea. Well him and look to get someone in now in preparation for next season.

There's loads of embargo talk, but why do people think we'll get one?

Reasons more than "they'll want to fxxk us".

Because we left the league with one. It still needs to formally ‘lift’ by the EFL because they’re separate entities to the premier league.

They also wanted to give us a points deduction for our time in the league and now will have more time to argue one based on their significantly harsher rules than the Premier League

I thought we’d gut the place last time but we didn’t. We truly need a hard reset. Knowing that Farce and Vestergaard got us relegated last time, who on earth sat there and thought this was a good idea?

The thing is we need teams to buy our high earners when we get relegated. We need to find a mug that will spend 5m+ on Faes. I don't see that happening and that was the problem last time. Players wanted to leave, but they had no other option but to stay.

Bolds I think will also be trying to get their agents to get them out, if I'm honest.

Italics I don't think are good enough to be key figures in a team looking to win the Championship. Would include Souttar in that if we're persisting with possession football (which, annoyingly, we probably should in the second tier.)

I think you're spot on with those in italics. We didn't use Coady last time, and I doubt we'll need to use him again.

Winks I agree will probably be looking to leave. Fatawu, I'd hope not, considering he's been recovering with us most of this year and I'd like to think is quite connected to the club/fans. But I appreciate that's not really how football works any more.

[Souttar]

I think if Sheffield Utd still want him then we should look at selling him, if the money is right.

Of course if it'd leave us short at the back then no, but Okoli hasn't gone yet and I'd sooner have him and Nelson build for the future.

Have you actually watched Souttar much? He is pretty good on the ball. I have watched a bit of Sheffield United and not seen this as a weakness.

I also have mates who are big Blades fans and they love him and also say it’s an unfair assumption that he is poor on the ball.

Pace wise although he is not fast, he is quicker than Coady and Vestergaard. Injuries aside as they will be key to have both come back but of all at our disposal, I’d be having a Souttar/Nelson partnership. Nelson probably covers Souttar weakness and I feel they could compliment each other. The only question would be, between them, leadership. You’d expect this from Souttar as the senior players but I don’t know either way on how he is there.

Nelson moves into a back three in possession allowing Coulibaly to bomb on.

Im assuming new CB and ST will be signed this window

By not playing games? They're better iff playing or scoring in that league than they are on our bench

Vestergaard didn’t have one Prem appearance in 2022/23, it was Dan Amartey.

Agreed though, our faults were evident towards the end of last season. Just stinks of inept recruitment.

Yep. I saw a podcast clip the other day of Mark Hughes’ ex assistant laughing that he didn’t want Vestergaard at Southampton because ‘he can’t run or turn’ and yet one of our numpties thought a vastly quicker league would be fine for him to play in

I think we could keep hold of El Khannouss. A season in the championship if we go down would be good for him. I'd aim to buy 3-4 of the better players in that league (depending on finances). Who those players are is another question, but I believe that is the market we should be looking at in the summer or even now.
