Our phobia of players from lower leagues has been an albatross around our neck for a while now. If we really were considering him last summer off the back of him starring in a poor Birmingham side, but went for the 'safe' option of £20 million on 'proven Premier League' talent in Oliver Skipp, that says everything about how brainless our recruitment is.

I'd play devil's advocate and suggest that he's only here because he spent last season abroad rather than at another Championship club. Our failure to pursue Kone this window shows we still haven't learned the lesson, we should have thrown the budget at him but I imagine Rudkin and co. were terrified at the thought of taking a chance on a player from League One. As it is, we're still without any proven goalscorer while QPR have the signing of the season.

Anyway, rant over, he's class, glad we've got him even if it's a year and £20 million of wasted money late.

I hope I´m wrong but perhaps we are skint and had no budget to pay for Kone or anyone else, so we just signed loan players.

It's telling isn't it? Even more frustrating knowing that it's almost entirely caused by the fallout of that pathetic Cooper window last summer.

I'll give credit that JJ's loan apparently has an affordable €5m obligation to buy if we go up. That's a double edged sword though, since he's clearly good enough and will most likely have his head turned by a few prem clubs if we don't do the business.

Ultimately we are where we are thanks to our own ineptitude, but we do at least appear to have made some shrewd acquisitions in the circumstances.

I heard its 5m straight up or 10 if we px skipp

In all seriousness, if we could, I’d absolutely go for the second option. Would be better financially in the long run!

and perhaps Kone saw we were a $hitshow and thought he'd opt for a chance to showcase his ability whilst living in west London

Not having the obligation could really bite us on the arse.

He's got it all and anyone would take a player like that for the price. Goalscoring box to box midfielder for £5m? We won't get him if we don't go up.

Don’t fall in love with a loan player ….

I really like him!

This is the transfer that really highlighted just how badly run we’d become.

A player that was clearly good enough, that had one foot through the door and the second foot all agreed to cross the threshold, good age and highly likely profitable resell value.

Just unforgivable.

I disagree with that.

For me Lookman wasn't as good as Barnes and was another expensive squad player, he looked adequate but not stand out. I wouldn't have bought him either if I was running the club.

Pfft, I doubt you'll ever see Barnes get crowned the African footballer of the year!

Not as good as Barnes I agree, but he is a player we SHOULD have bought though!

We saw Lookman was a serious talent on the rare occasions when we dropped the Rodgersball bullshit and he was allowed to play to his strengths. That goal against Liverpool was a fleeting glimpse of what could have been if we'd played more direct.

The flipside of that is that, if we did get him permanently, he would have almost certainly stagnated in the environment Brendan created post-FA Cup. We were already rotting from the inside by the end of that season.

Kone looked a no brainer, just turned 22 in July and had no academy background. He got to Wycombe the hard way from the depths of the lower leagues and was the League One POTY. I've always said you won't go far wrong buying the best young player from the league below like we did when we bought Maddison.

Everything just screamed potential and rough diamond coupled with a low transfer fee.

I'm not sure if we were ever in for him but I 'd rather take my chances on half a dozen Kone types than one Skipp who we knew wasn't good enough for Tottenham and has been in the game long enough that we knew he'd just abour reached his ceiling.

quite evidently, we have no money to spend at this current time. Wycombe obviously wanted money.

I reckon more wages. I don’t buy that we couldn’t have managed £4mill spread across the contract length. I also think it’s unlikely we would have given a lack of assurances he would be used a lot given our other options.

Wages seems more likely. He was only proven at L1 level and might have been asking for wages far higher than justified. It would give me confidence we are trying to sort things out if that was the case. We can’t have it both ways, complaining we can’t move players like Daka on due to wages and then moan we didn’t get someone else for that reason.

If we have an option then we have control of the situation.

It's great having a lad in that seems to 'get it'.

It's no surprise everyone has taken to him quickly as he works hard, can score and actually has some mobility about him.

We've lacked this kind of player, particularly through the middle for some time.
