We can’t give the club the benefit of doubt. Probably negotiated him down from £45k to £35k and we think it’s a win.

It also means we have 4 ST options whose deals expire at the end of the season, meaning we’ll extend at least one out of laziness.

Just put the money towards a striker in the summer

I'm a pretty big cynic and I have to admit even I have a hard time thinking we'll give Antonio any significant contract.

I doubt he's got hundreds of offers and I doubt we have the money to actually be reckless and irresponsible even if Rudkin would, which I accept he might.

Maybe so.

But our other forward options when BH was here were Fryatt and Howard

GTF’s time overlapped with Vardy, Wood, Nugent and Kramaric

Right now we’ve got Ayew, Carranza and Jake Evans. The first one isn’t a striker and the second two have never scored for us.

Michail Antonio might not be a great choice but the bar is historically low at this current time

You’re completely right and I said a few pages above that it is a panic buy (sorry free) because there is no other option out there. We’ve gone into a league season with 3 strikers who wouldn’t have started in the side that got relegated to League One (Howard, Fryatt, Hume). That’s horrendous.

1 non penalty goal and a couple of assists in games that are already over.

I don't even think he'll get that - if we sign him he'll probably be fit enough in February and possibly never sharp enough.

Football age curves typically look like this:

Now let's throw in a broken femur sustained in a car crash at 35 and voila!

Whilst he hasn’t played a senior game in over a year, he has been placed in some u21 games so I don’t think he is THAT unfit

he also played for Jamaica in the summer.

35 minutes for Jamaica across 3 games in June and 2 games for West Ham u21s in August - fit as a fiddle

I cant see the wages being over £20k and genuinely think itd be closer to 10. But thats more based on what I think hes looking for rather than our negotiating.

I'd be very surprised if we offered him £20k per week. More like £10k as you say, bulked up by an attractive appearance/performance bonus.

Me neither but repeating myself, we can't give them the benefit of doubt. We'd all have said we just wouldn't

Pay £20-25m for Skipp

Pay £5-8m for Ayew

Pay £10m for Winks

Pay £7m for Coady

Give Vestergaard a new 3 year deal

Give Thomas a new 4 year deal

Not put in a cancellation clause in Edouard's loan deal

We can't blithely assume Antonio will be cheap given his circumstances, we can assume Rudkin will get it wrong

I 100% agree with you on the bold

I mean lets be fair, absolutely non of us no what we are talking about here as non of us have any tangible evidence to go off.

No matter what the right choice is I have full faith in our leadership to make the wrong one.

When's that ever stopped us?

Am i the only one who thinks he will be on low wages with high bonuses? I think after his accident he just wanted to prove he could get back to playing standard, I doubt its that much about money given his ages. Maybe im clutching at straws

That would make sense, which is why we wont do it

Agreed. The usual Eeyores on here will find every reason to disparage the notion - the accountants, the osteopaths, the statisticians. But I always got fearful when he was around our goal. The sheer physicality of the man was difficult to cope with. His pedigree is proven and he'll be determined to return to the game. He's worth a punt.

Agree about physicality. Ulloa was the last decent player who could head the ball when up against a centre half, whilst Stevie Howard was the only one this century who would punish the centre half or just shove him out the way. As fans we say, When Fats or Mav or Monga or overlappers are wide, "cross the darned ball" - then we look whats in the box and say "Nah -- don't bother!".

Be great to have someone who could challenge for ANY high ball in the opponents area!!

Just a thought.

I think it’s probable we sign him especially with our recent change in tactics and formation. He’s decent at holding it up and gives a focal point for long balls or crosses which we don’t currently have

question marks rightly so on whether he’s going to be okay since his major crash but I can only imagine we are looking at him as carranza is going back and he should he at least an upgrade on him

Great example of a player who was absolutely awful for us but gets remembered differently because he was in a successful side.

Did you watch any of those games at the time?

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion but calling him awful for us is a very special take IMO.

Like others have said, it's not even that I wouldn't like it to work out if it does happen, but I have zero faith in those calling the shots at LCFC based on pretty much everything they've done for the majority of the last decade.

It'll be a nice story if he does do the business, and I'll be delighted if it does, but all signs point to us pissing wages up the wall for a handful of lackluster appearances at the expense of youth players like Evans.

I'll add another thing as well - if it does work out to any extent, it'll only embolden them to make more decisions like this instead of trusting the academy, which is the worst thing we could possibly do at this crossroads in the future of our squad.

Serious Ayew vibes for me.

Most on here weren’t up for his signing when the rumours started doing the rounds.

Some said that those posters were “being snobby”, or “we were in League One, never forget!”.

As predicted Ayew has been a pretty dreadful signing on a hefty wedge.
