Which is the baffling thing. Martin is 40—a young manager by any measure. He's shown he can coach a squad of players to play a particular way. He's got a good track record of blooding young players and is usually popular in the dressing room (Rangers being a notable exception). By all accounts he his ambitious and sees himself managing at the very top. Yet he has this glaring weakness in that he refuses to deviate from his preferred style even when it is tantamount to suicide against superior opposition. This means he will only ever deliver success if the squad at his disposal is technically superior to every other team in whatever division they're in.

 

If he doesn't become more pragmatic it will strangle his career before it's really taken off, yet he shows no signs of altering his approach. It's very odd.

Exactly. Why would he jump straight back in at a basket case club in league 1. Managers get fired in the championship all the time and he'll be one of the first names on their lists.

This style is so susceptible to capitulations. Look at the two CL chasing seasons under Rodgers or how we nearly blew it under Maresca. A philosophy built upon control is fine if you have the talent to ensure that you feel in control the vast majority of time. If it's on a knife-edge, it only takes a bit of end of season pressure, fatigue, injuries or teams sussing you out for that control to slip away and for panic to ensure. The players are not set up to deal with scenarios other than having control.

 

It also requires a certain profile of player that often is hard to find. Other things like attitude, physicality, stamina, agressision, teamwork, resilience etc are deprioritised. You end up with a squad that, when the sun is shining, can look incredible, but also one that can't deal with the rainy days.

 

For a club like us it's all a sham. It's designed to make us look 'elite' and I suspect that is why Top craves it.

I prefer the jeopardy of a totally unknown, to me at least experienced foreigner manager than any of these being plucked off the Ex manger football league merry-go-round who fill me with dread.

 

All are just as likely to fail as succeed but it would be a more exciting, expectant and surprising adventure then the OFFS feeling I get from any of those currently being mentioned.

In fairness, he's from the West Mids and had his longest spell as a player at Wolves. I can see why he wanted to go there.

There's no way his stock has dropped far enough that he needs League One and no way our combination of reputation and financial situation is good enough to attract his level of coach to drop.

 

Can see us being naive enough to waste time on him but can't see it ever happening.

 

Plus, it honestly wouldn't surprise me if Topkin think Martin is genuinely a better catch.

 

I mean, Ipswich job is available. Looks like a no-brainer to me that he would try for that. Whether they'd have him...not sure. Might be fishing in a bigger pond now. But Edwards is a similar sort of builder as McKenna, IMHO.

 

Then again, apparently Ipswich do this whole "planning ahead" thing, so probably have someone lined up already. Don't really understand that approach tbh. Where's the jeopardy?!

I think someone with at least half a clue manages not to get us relegated from a division where Hull managed to get promotion.

I can't stand seeing the fake pass, roll back, inviting pressure of a forward in full momentum and then passing the chaos onto your teammate.

 

Along with the windows restart music every time Okoli has to pass the ball and Nelson doing his best JV junior impression, we are in for another stink out season unless things change quickly.  We have our great coaching staff that will ignore and make excuses for the same mistakes.  

 

Everything will stay the same because of the players, manager and coaching staff's hubris, too good for the league but their ability got us in this situation.

We were not in the relegation zone when we got rid of him. We were 14th.

I think that we have to question whether any manager or squad can be successful with our current setup.

Maresca could, with a very strong squad. But we've degraded a lot since then.
