It's absolute madness to talk about giving him the boot after one game. Let's see where we are after a dozen or so games. Remember there was the O'Neill out brigade early in his tenure. Apart from anything else, we can't afford to sack him, he's on a three year contract. Who else would take this job on at the moment? We've also spent what little finances we have on supporting Martin with players he wanted at the club - would these be the players a new manager would require? Hopefully things will settle down, we've had a major overall of playing staff and we need time for things to bed in. Yeah I was completely against the appointment and think it will inevitably end in disaster yet again but they've made their bed so they can lie it. Crazy to talk about sacking him 1

I don't see what alternative there is. I certainly didn't want him, but now he's here and won't be sacked as we can't afford to, then I'm hoping things may turn around by a dozen games or so. I'm not convinced they will, but I am patient enough to see.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 16 August Posted 16 August (edited) He obviously needs more than a couple of (very underwhelming) games to prove himself - he's not been helped by the recruitment team slapping each other's arses rather than finding him defenders capable of playing his style - if the board have hung their hat on him they have to have some conviction and give him the players they think will work, but they can't be just signing lads he wants/knows for the sake of it, moreso given the way we turnover managers Thats the bigger red flag for me, the signings who are clearly "his" in Cullen and McCarthy look pretty shite Edited 16 August by Miquel The Work Geordie 4

Doesnt matter if we are 1 game in or 40. It is not acceptable. We should sack the manager and someone should finally stand up to the nepo baby and tell him we cant afford to play his shit useless style of football any longer. Its dooming the club. Who is being paid over 50k a week? You’re hysterical. 1
Dames Posted 16 August Posted 16 August 6 minutes ago, MGLCFC said: Already told you we can't afford to and even if we could who would take the job with players already recruited to suite RM. As for Top, he'll go when he gets the right deal for KP I assume. But you haven't answered the question with a realistic alternative. Yes, some may want to sack the manager now, most would like the board to go, but it's not happening any time soon. ‘Realistic alternative’ has been the default response from people for seasons and look where thats landed us. Its not as good a defence as you think it is. The realistic alternative is anyone that has experience getting out of this division by playing pragmatic football making the most of the resources you have. Not a manager blindly wedded to an unsuitable style of play constantly bemoaning not having the right players. Seen this story before many times we know how it ends. 2

Skipp, Souttar, Choudary, Faes, Thomas, Mavididi are all on or around about that figure and 3 of them started yesterday. I imagine Okoli isnt far off either and some of them will be in the high 20s lower 30s. 1

If you believe this then we are we making such huge losses season after season despite selling and why are we always falling afoul or always close to falling afoul of the financial rules?? Also why is it so hard to shift these players? And despite our position why are none of them openly or brazenly agitating for a move away? I’m not the one with my head in the sand here.
BrilliantFox Posted 16 August Posted 16 August (edited) So we're winning 1-0 and he decides to take off a forward for a defensive midfielder. Then only after the opposition scoring, he realises he should have made better subs in the first place. Russell Martin really has no clue about in-game management or momentum. sm1 Posted 16 August Posted 16 August Just heard his post match interview where he talks about wanting more experienced players. Guys another Cooper, get rid before he wastes money we dont have on "experienced" journey men.

Any of the players playing yesterday being on anything more than £10k a week is still fraudulent (excluding the good ones like Alves, Braybrooke and Joseph). A 30-50% reduction is still at best £25k a week!

There is no definitive confirmation of these so called clauses either I actually remember journalists saying a few seasons ago that we were so unprepared for relegation that most of the players didnt have these clauses. I imagine they are in place now but i wouldnt imagine they are reducing the wage bill in the way that you think they are considering that last season we still had some stupidly high earners on the books.

That is not looking for a reason. 1

What information do you have about the wage bill last year? No doubt many of our players were on more than they deserved, but I’m interested to know the figures you clearly have access to?
Corky Posted 16 August Posted 16 August A lot of new season-ticket holders and plenty of Saturday 3pm matches for the crowd to get settled in. He won't get leeway if we start slowly.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 16 August Posted 16 August The main problem with Russell Martin is he is on a hiding to nothing. he has to win around 70-80 per cent of games at this level or after 10/12 games or similar the majority of fans will be calling for his head. he hasn't made a good start but it's only 2 games. We need to give him more time yet. however we are already in the worst league position in our entire 142 year history let's hope and pray he wins enough games to get our fan base on board. I don't want to be a doom merchant but honestly this will end in tears and quickly I feel i hope to be proved wrong 1

We didnt spend any money on transfers so logically speaking a high wage bill is the reason. Its well documented by journalists and former players that we spend silly money on wages. Stop playing around with this performative ‘gotcha’ nonsense. It wont wash anymore. 1
The Doctor Posted 16 August Posted 16 August 33 minutes ago, MGLCFC said: Let's have your enlightened answer to how things should improve. Don't say sack the board, because that isn't happening. Don't say sack the manager because we can't afford to. obviously sack the manager and have one who'll tell the nepo baby to **** off, because he doesn't understand football. But, with the financial constraints - the manager simply has to learn how football works. The point of the game is you score goals, not have more of the ball than your opponents. If he's not gonna do that you might as well tell him to stay away from the club and have one of the coaching staff just manage the team in all but name. 1
