It is just absolute incompetence at this point. 8 minutes ago, Cropwellfox said: Would probably say the lack of centre forward is the bigger unforgivable failure. Would imagine they’ve been trying to move Okoli and Faes on with no takers, and other teams know how ****ed we are so lowballing on Nelson and Souttar. Aluko, Gray and even Wilson-Brown in the squad at start of pre season so it’s understandable if completely inept. Haha I’d actually briefly forgot about the lack of a striker. And last season we started the season with one first team striker and it was Patson Daka who basically didn’t count as a striker 😂 1
Dan Posted 9 August Posted 9 August Had a change of heart on Souttar to be honest. I still think he is our highest ceiling CB, but he's just simply not suited to playing in a Martin side. If we're really going up this route then I think it'd be wise to cash in. Same with Okoli. 2
Dan Posted 9 August Posted 9 August I'd caveat by saying if it was up to me I'd have been using him a long time ago and I wouldn't be so wedded to this type of football we're seemingly obsessed with. But the whole thing is an ill fit. Our recruitment really is ridiculous. It's so brainless. Square pegs in round holes constantly.

Had enough of players who don’t want to be here. If £8m is true take it and invest in two proper ball playing CB’s, or get one in on loan like Malachi Hardy.
Bluearmyfox28 Posted 9 August Posted 9 August He’s still got around £6m in book value, so £8m would give you around £2m profit. As long as the money isn’t based on performance add ons and all guaranteed we’ve got to take that offer and reinvest that profit into a new centre back and then get another on loan. Interesting bit of information that I have clocked here is that Wilder has come out and said they only paid £5m for Mark McGuiness despite it being heavily reported that the fee was £10m. Wouldn’t be surprised if we are using that higher fee as indicator for what Sheff Utd need to pay for Souttar and Wilder is downplaying the fee as a negotiation tactic. May be completely irrelevant just seems an odd coincidence of timing. 1

I appreciate the amount of activity behind clearing the swamp, but am I alone in thinking this is pretty negligent? The defence is a mess. You've got four senior CBs, three of them could feasibly make a move before the end of the window and the other might have done if he hadn't done his ACL. We really need a bit of reliability here. We should've fixed this far sooner than now. I think an absolute minimum of two need to arrive. What's happened with Wilson-Brown? He'd be an obvious 3rd/4th choice - possibly higher if he's actually good. 1

It was reported in pre season he’d been left out (going to Spain I think) as an offer had come in for him. So I guess the club wanted him to go, but he’s still here to my knowledge? You’re right the back line is a total mess.

With four relatively expensive CBs on the books already we can't really afford to go out and add two more until we've offloaded some. Yes, prior years recruitment has indeed been shite but we still need to sell before we buy. Striker is a different issue. Trying to find someone that's not wildly expensive, broken or past it at a price we can afford is difficult. As shown by the protracted signing of the Bosnian chap you can't just go and sign randoms from elsewhere easily either. That being said our recruitment upfront has been dog shite for many years so probably for the best we aren't throwing significant amounts of money at it as the chances of it coming off are sadly slim.

foxgas Posted 10 August Posted 10 August I think we have to sell due to his injury record. Not selling Nelson pre season looks a bad decision now. The last thing we can afford is burning wages on players forever in the treatment room.
BlueBus Posted 10 August Posted 10 August I'd sell, look what happened to Ben Nelson. I agree he's our best CB but he's 27 and has only done a 30+ game season twice in his career, he's not worth an £8m gamble with our current finances unfortunately. 1

Think the issue is we sell him and we go into the season without any reliable experienced centre back options. If we do take the offer or not it should wait until we have a replacement lined up, we really can’t afford to go into games with Okoli and Wilson-Brown/Gray
shen Posted 10 August Posted 10 August Obviously we sell. He's one of the few first teamers with sell-on value. He'd be on large wages and he doesn't want or need to play League One football. If we can reinvest a couple of mil, then I'd find a defender who's better suited to the way we play.
Danno Posted 10 August Posted 10 August Suspect he will go on deadline day after we sign Grant Hanley on a 5 year deal 3
indierich06 Posted 10 August Posted 10 August I think if Souttar and Page both go in the next week or two, there will be additions in both of their positions, and those sales will probably fund other transfers in as well. Hate to say it, but I'd sell if we get anything like £9m.

Popular Post Sol thewall Bamba Posted 10 August Popular Post Posted 10 August People still thinking that money from this deal will be re-invested Book value still remaining of at least 6million. If we get 8million up front for him, 2million profit covers the interest on our loans for 10 weeks. That's where this money will go. 5

The Nelson injury has really ****ed us. Hopefully we can get someone in through the door with the right mentality and ability to fit into a Martin team. Wonder if we can use our McCarron contacts and get Max Alleyne in for the season.

Think of all the championship sides being desperate to jump ship to Sheffield United would be like for like, would be very short sighted for him to throw his toys out for that move. If it was Middlesbrough or someone of that ilk I could see the desperation a lot more, but he is more than likely going to end up in a similar situation next year there as he is here next year
