Looking like we have quite a bit of competition at the moment for the 3 midfield positions behind the striker.

Chaplin, Cullen, Burns and Watson have all signed this summer.

Added to Mavididi, BDR, Page, Alves.

How do we think it’s going to look in this area of the pitch most weeks?

Assuming we are stuck with BDCR and Cullen as strikers at the moment (which is very sad) unless anything happens in the window. Also think Mavididi will go.

So then you have 5 rotating for the 3 positions

Cullen covers CF/False 9

LW - Watson, Mavididi

10 - Chaplin, PAge

RW - Burns, Alves

Waterboy - BDCR

On the left, watson and Mavididi unless we manage to shift him in wich case it will be Alves and Watson.

On the right, Burns and either Alves/Evans or both. Carr will likely go out on loan.

Woyo if he stays can cover both wings and FB positions.

At #10, Chaplin and Cullen with Alves and Page as options (although I think he will play deeper)

ST, Bristric, Cullen and HOPEFULLY someone else. I would be OK with Adebayo.

So out of that, I would go with....

                              Bristric

Alves.                   Chaplin                 Burns

Think we will try and move on Mavididi and BCDR.

Alves has to start the first 10-15 games of the season if fit.

What’s the point in bringing in an ageing winger like Burns or someone else’s kid in Watson only to block the development of your own homegrown asset when the club has sunk to the level at which we used to loan these kids out to for experience?

There'll always be an excuse. Go back to any point in time on this place and there are always excuses made for it.

The key point here is that we loaned our players to league one to get experience, not to win a title.

We need to get promoted this season, the youth players will help with that but we can’t expect them to do it all alone.

So next year the excuse will be "they didn't make an impact in League 1, how can you expect them to do it in the Championship!" And it goes on.

At this moment in time we enter another season without a recognized goal scorer and that should be a big red flag- again. BDCr should not be anywhere near the squad never mind the team and certainly not as a forward. Hopefully we have enough wing players now to sideline Mavadidi. If we are to even think of promotion we need more goals two -layers to get 25to 30 goals as a minimum between them. Let’s see how it goes but I am very concerned 24 hours before our first competitive game.

Assuming I've not missed anything and we wrap up Bristric:

Bristric

Watson, Chaplin, Burns

Is my guess for what Martin will settle on most weeks. Doubt that'll be the lineup for Northampton but possibly by County.

Think we'll see a fair bit of Alves and Cullen but if Burns and Chaplin link up as well as the Ipswich fans claim then I think they'll eventually lock down those positions.

Before everyone starts moaning about our own youth players, that's not me saying my own preferred line up it's just what I think will happen.

Obviously the curve ball is that Martin apparently "loves" Cullen and we appear to have spent the most money on him but I just can't see where he gets in that front four over anyone else unless one of Bristric or Chaplin really just don't click with Martin.

Burns and Chaplin can't play 90 every game (well, no one can, but you know what i mean). You would think Martin would be looking to give Alves serious minutes in all of that, especially after his preseason.

There's five subs a match again in league one, so it may well be someone getting 60-70 minutes, then off the bench in mid week and cups. Most players in the first team will just naturally get minutes through rotation and injuries.

Maybe he will use the Ipswich method of changing most of the frontline on 60 minutes.

Assuming @Finnegan is correct. that gives the opportunity for Cullen, Alves, Mavididi & Bristric on as a full and fresh front 4.

This season we will utilise 3/4 academy grads regularly, Alves or any academy player should be looking at the competition and seeing it as a positive environment to break into the team, make an impact and keep their place.

If he or others do that then we'll of had a successful season, it's a lazy remark to say other players are ''blocking them'' did that logic apply to Man Utd when Scholes, Butt, Beckham, Giggs etc break through? They were just good enough and the manager believed in the academy - I don't think RM has done anything to block younger players so far, albeit pre season - a different attitude to previously.

In any team you need competition and everyone on their toes to perform their best - whether it's a business or sport, the cream will rise.

I still expect Mavididi and maybe BDCR to leave

RW - Burns, Carr,

LW - Watson, Alves

AM - Chaplin

CF - Cullen, Bristric

Would expect at least one of Hutchinson or Evans to go out on loan, and another CF to come in by end of window.

I think a lot depends on how Martin plans to use Cullen this season. If he’s a striker then it seems we’re aiming for one younger and one more experienced player in each position. I wonder if this is the aim for the whole squad, as it could hint at planned changes at CDM and CB.

Also why are only 7 subs allowed on the bench if teams can bring on 5 subs? Ridiculous that it doesn’t align with the other leagues, and it’s detrimental to youth development across the league.

Realistically you would expect them to be getting between 1000-2000 minutes this season apart from the likes of braybrooke and joseph who I would expect to be getting closer to 3000-5000 minutes depending on injuries and how far we go in cups etc.

If the players take advantage of that and show they are good enough they will get more minutes, if they struggle in games this coming season and don’t prove themselves and we make it back to the championship they should be on loan next year to league 1 for more minutes or they should be used as bit part players again.
